If I'm using a juicer to make juice and I am logging those fruits and vegetables, does that count as the full carb/protein/calories/sugar, etc. since I'm not eating the pulp but just the juice?

I don't think so. I read on most sites that apples lose fiber and other things when they are juiced. Try to google juicing calories or something. There are a few on here, like calories for juiced apples.

From everything I've read, if you just drink the juice you are basically getting all of the sugar of the fruit and very few of the benefits. Why not just eat the fruit?

  • That was very helpful, thank you!

Ummm....where on earth did you read this?? This is completely untrue...in fact, it's EXTREMELY beneficial! We put a lot of our cancer patients on juicing diets while doing radiation because it's one of the best ways for them to stay properly nourished!

Whatever you say, I don't feel like arguing and I don't feel like looking it up right now. I was just reading something about how sugar has always been rare for humans, fruit (in it's entirety) was one of the only sources, and that at only certain times of year. With the advent of prolific, cheap sugar in the last couple hundred years, we are now eating incredible amounts of sugar. You know what's happened with that.

It would make sense that eating the whole fruit is healthier, correct? You are getting the fiber and everything that nature packaged up, instead of extracting the sugary water.

And I'm sorry, but you being in the medical profession does not mean you know the absolute truth.

(So I guess I did feel like arguing.)

When I juice, I use 4 stalks celery, 1 tomato, 1 bell pepper, 2 apples, 4 carrots, cilantro, 1 jalapeno pepper, and sometimes beets and fennel. When would I have time to eat all of that? I can, however, drink it down fairly quickly, which I do. After adding a shot of Tabasco!

Sugar is accompanied by fiber in nature. You are messing with that.

You do realize that by juicing all that, you are not "eating" it. It is not the same.

    Wow...look at you go!

You're right, I don't know the absolute truth. Nobody does. Even I, as a nutritionist, do not know everything, nor do I claim to. But if I think a patient deserves a chance at rebuilding their red blood cells, alkalizing their entire system, detoxifying their liver, increasing their energy, boosting their immune system, helping them get clearer skin, improve the overall health of their cardiovascular system, among other benefits, I will educate them on juicing.

If people want rapid nutrition (liquid hardly needs to go through a digestion process, so it's nutrients are absorbed much quicker, and a dense dose of all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients in juiced fruits and vegetables, then more power to them.

But if you prefer to drink kool-aid, that's your choice.

I think theres a big difference between a fruit juice of sorts, vs a green juice, or a veggie juice. I'd agree that drinking like 8 juiced apples isn't very beneficial...and is a calorie bomb. But, I KNOW that juicing veggies can be absolutely beneficial. Think of veggie (or any juice) as the quickest way for the body to receive nutrients. It's not dealing with pulp or fiber--just the vitamins and minerals, so it's like an immediate source for your body if it's juiced.

When I juice--I count all the calories, but thats also because I'm juicing mostly veggies, and the calorie count isn't that high. Here is an example of a typical green juice for me:

    5 stalks of celery
    1 head of romaine
    5 cups of spinach
    1 bunch of swiss chard
1 bunch of flat leaf parsley
    2 lemons
    2 green apples
    3 big carrots
    1 sprig of fresh ginger

I juice all of that together, and then run it through a nut milk bag to get rid of any remaining pulp. This typically gives me two big glasses of juice. I use it within two days, and store it in a mason jar.

and for the record the idea of juicing just being all the sugars is the biggest load of crock I have ever seen and I reason why folks who come to forums for advice still need to do some investigation. I also find it appalling that you can dish out such ludicrous theories but when asked where you came upon that info you are too lazy to substantiate your claims. So basically you pulled them out your butt and tried to pass them off as gospel.

Wait a second...who said anything about Kool-aid? I wouldn't touch that stuff with a ten-foot pole. I drink water, herbal tea, and wine. That's it.

Everything you said makes sense. It just makes more sense to me that when you juice, you are tossing all the fiber and bulk of the fruit, which helps slow the absorption process. The fiber in fruit is what makes it a more healthy sugar source. Fruit juice is full of vitamins, but it's also full of fructose.

In any case, I try to avoid sugar almost always. The less you eat the less you want it. I prefer to get my vitamins the way we evolved to, by eating vegetables and the whole fruit.

Isn't that because those patients are likely to vomit up any solid food? Yes, for those people it would make sense. But thankfully we're not radiation patients so the real fruit is a better choice.

Believe me, they vomit up liquids, too, but that's kind of the point. When your nutrients are in liquid form, they absorb into your system much quicker than if you have to fully digest them. They are getting the nutrients. This is why many people with health problems (not just cancer), are recommended to juice. Not necessarily for every meal, not even every day, but to at least incorporate it into their diet.

Honestly, it's fresh fruits and vegetables, people! What can seriously be the issue with that??!!

You are right! I woke up and decided I would pull some stuff out of my butt and then try to get people to believe it. No one EVER before has put forth the theory that eating the whole fruit is better then removing all the healthy fiber (of which Americans get waayyy too little of). It was the craziest thing I could think of.

You are being rude. You choose to believe whatever you want. I prefer to not drink a glass of sugar, even if it did come from a fruit. Where do you think white sugar comes from? That's right...a plant.

That's the thing though, it's not. You are removing most of the actual substance of the fruit. Why can't you blend up the whole fruit with some water to make a liquid for the patients?

You drink wine? But you're losing all the fibre benefits from the grapes!

Seriously though....fibre is defintely a great and important part of fruit, but if you haven't been living under a rock for the past ten years you may have heard something of the benefits of antioxidants, which are abundant in fruit. Veggies are full of beneficial phytochemicals. These things are associated with the pigments, which are retained in juicing.

I don't really know anything, this is just one of those times I get to use my degree in Food Science with its minor in Functional Foods and nutraceuticals. ;-)

Ok ok I'm not saying it's a BAD thing. A glass of freshly squeezed juice never hurt anyone. But I personally wouldn't advocate replacing all fresh fruit with just the juiced version. Not saying that's what you're doing, but I think you get my drift.

    That is just plain rude.

Juicing, although I grant it as having good health benefits (it is veggies/fruit of course), is still another "fad". As is "Gluten Free", "Raw", etc. Sure, eating [drinking] veggies and fruit are good for you. And any very obese person who spends six months juicing and eating nothing else IS going to lose weight (Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead) but he will also lose weight with a healthy diet and exercise. I, personally, am a fan of eating - as in chewing, munching, swallowing. I find that it frankly takes more energy to juice than to actually eat my food, but then that's just me.

To each his own, just don't be mean about it.

From everything I've read, if you just drink the juice you are basically getting all of the sugar of the fruit and very few of the benefits. Why not just eat the fruit?

    Word!

and for the record the idea of juicing just being all the sugars is the biggest load of crock I have ever seen and I reason why folks who come to forums for advice still need to do some investigation. I also find it appalling that you can dish out such ludicrous theories but when asked where you came upon that info you are too lazy to substantiate your claims. So basically you pulled them out your butt and tried to pass them off as gospel.

I enjoy my eating, too, although I appreciate the tutorial on how to. I just enjoy the many positive benefits I get out of juicing as well.

I guess the bottom line is that I try to stick to what my body evolved to do. Juice just isn't part of a natural diet. Fruit was relatively rare, and drinking just the juice was probably unheard of.

But I don't really care about this topic, despite all my replies (it's just fun to debate). I don't drink juice and I won't give it to my kids (they will be drinking breast-milk and then just water, except at special occasions - I'm not a monster).

Well you sure are lucky that your body evolved to drink wine and not juice...I want your genetics!

Don't make fun of wine. :) Wild animals can and do get wasted on fermented fruit on a regular basis :p

Give me a break...I already admitted to everything about the wine.

Do you understand the difference between indulgence (wine) and doing something for your health (juicing)? Of course you do because you're not an idiot.

I guess I should have said that I don't adopt practices to bolster my health that aren't in line with natural evolution. Ok? Geez...

I wouldn't diss wine as lacking in health benefits. There is plenty of scientific support for consumption of wine. Again, it's about the antioxidants (and also about the dose, of course). Sorry to disappoint you, out your glass a day is not just an indulgence!
