RUNNERS: Looking for Support for Running and Weight-Loss Goa

Hi all - I am looking to find some other runners who are trying to lose a few pounds and get to (or get back to) a goal weight. I have a half-marathon on Sep 18th and I am trying to get back to a weight I felt comfortable at for a couple of years after my kids were born. Recently, I have found that running increases my appetite and if I don't watch it, the pounds start to creep on.
So, if there are any other runners out there, please join me here. I could use the motivation and support from others with similar goals. Let's outline upcoming runs, weight milestones we'd like to hit, and race time goals (finishing is a great goal too!).
Who's in? Please feel free to add me as a friend. I have not yet used that part of this website!

I had a hard time balancing my nutrition with my running as well. I am now training for a marathon and yes your body is hungry but you have to give it what it needs. You need the food as fuel for your energy. Make sure your getting plenty of lean protein and complex carbs! Good luck you can do it!0

I am running my first half marathon October 15 and could use some support. Would like to run the entire race without walking need to lose 7 pounds.

I'm not trying to lose, but I'm trying to not gain while training for a half in Sept, and full in Nov! I try to keep carbs and munchies at bay on long run days, so far so good! Been in training since June and I've lost 2lbs (not a lot, but I lose really slow) Would love extra motivation and support!

I can do 5k's on the treadmill and do at least two a month on my own.. ran one with Weight watchers, non officially..
but not sure where to start finding places to run..
I still need to lose at least 30 pounds to be happy with myself on the outside.
I am doing Weight watchers, and body for life. It is working so far!0 -

Cool.. It'll be my first run as well.. Good luck!0 -
As part of my training I am running a 5k tomorrow just before Irene arrives. Trying to rest today instead of working out but it's hard.

Hey everyone- Great to meet you. Sounds like everyone has some great goals and some great accomplishments so far too!
Topsking2010 - Good luck on the 5k tomorrow. For sure rest - or if you absolutely feel the need to do something, go for a super light 3 k jog with a few strides (sprints). That is a good way to prepare your muscles for their challenge tomorrow.0 -
I am training for a 15K in November and I have done 3 5Ks and have another coming up in September. I have also been stuck at the same weight since March. Running makes me hungry!!!0

Picking races as goals is an amazing way to stay on track. Before I run the half on Sep 18th, I need to register for my next run so I don't let up too much... I'm planning a 10k on October 29th and then maybe another on Dec 6th. That'll be it for 2011.
Looking forward to hearing how that 5k goes tomorrow Top!0 -
katapple: What an amazing journey. Congrats and amazing work on the running goals. They will totally keep you motivated (and motivating others!).0

Top and MHackrott - just wanted to comment on your "without walking" goal. I ran my first full marathon in 4:30 or so (11 yrs ago so can't find the exact time online) and I barely walked. Less than a year later I ran my second marathon in 4:01 and walked for a full minute every 10 minutes and I ran across the finish like it was nothing (there were some hard moments in there though - I'm not gonna lie!).
Just something to consider... at least walking through water stations will give those running muscles a quick chance to relax and stretch out. That's my minimum rule for my halfs these days. I tell myself that no matter how bad I wanna keep going, especially at the beginning, I must walk through the water stations (plus it's easier to drink).
Don't want you to think your goal isn't a good one, but just wanted to let you know that it won't necessarily make you faster...0 -
Hi, I would like to join. I will need to see if I can keep up. So far so good (:
I am 47, and I want to lose 5-7 Ibs.
I am going try to do a 5K tomorrow, not sure what time I am looking for yet - as long as I jog without walking (same as PPs ). Next race my goal is to beat this time (: and to continuously improve.
My long term goal is to run a half-marathon but a date is not on the radar yet.

that is a good point about walking.... still don't want to walk for my 5K tomorrow though but maybe I will walk for my first half marathon (:
while my goal is not to walk I may have to because my training has been only been on an elliptical/Arc machine... and Zumba, but we will see.... If it feels like I am hurt I will definitely walk.0 -

Thanks! I love what you said about walking, it's not the end of the world to walk! I'm not a fast runner by any means and I walked through two water stations at my last race (10k) and still beat my goal to get under 58 minutes! I plan on walking through many stations for water and fuel at both the half and full. I want to feel alive when I cross the finish line, not dead!
Have 10 miles this morning I'm focusing on keeping my heart rate under 160 for my long runs, because I've noticed I can still get on with my day without having to take a nap or gorge myself on carbs. Training for this half has made me completely reevaluate my running style (hurry up and finish vs just enjoying the ride)
Happy running everyone!0 -

I first lost 30 lbs last summer and now since the tummy won't budge I think maybe I could lose 8 more pounds and see if it would help.
After finishing 10K I decided maybe I should try for half marathon.
I am still up in the air about wanting to complete a marathon.
I really don't have any goal times as I am just looking to run the distance. I am kind of a slow runner, but I would like to run my next 10k under an hour.
Today I am running 3 miles and tomorrow 7. Last week I ran my first 8 miles.0 -
Hi,
I seem to stop and start with my weight loss and running. I regularly go to rosemary conley exercise classes, also do zumba once a week and wii fit plus along with running when I can - time is often an issue!
If I can get my eating habits sorted I should get back down to lower weight then goal weight of 9 stone. Hoping keeping track of my food intake here will be motivation enough!
I have run 5 k before but not in an organised race since 2009, planning to sign up for 5 or 10 k race for life next year depending how much my running has improved!0 -
hey! i just started the c25k 2 weeks ago, i am moving through it quickly though and am into the 3rd week! i am loving it!

My kind of thread!! I would love to join in!! I started running about 1 1/2 years ago with the C25K program, ran my first 5K May 2010, first 10K Oct. 2010, and just kept going!! My 2011 New Years resolution was to run my first half marathon and to run an event every month of 2011...I am on track so far!! I ran my first half marathon in Jan. 2011, and so far for 2011, I have run 2-5Ks, 2-10Ks, and 4-half marathons!! I have lost about 50 pounds since beginning running, and have a little over 20 pounds to go. Staying signed up for events each month has kept me going and motivated. I am planning 2-5Ks in September, and planning my next half in November.

Still a semi-noob runner here. Started last fall with C25K and ran my first 5K in December, running my first 10K race on 11/12 (already ran 10K+ on my own) and looking for a 1/2 in December (the beauty of living in the South!). Already training for the 1/2.
For weight I'm trying to knock off the 3 pounds that were hanging on after summer activities as well as tone up a midsection that has 39 years of flab to work through. Feel free to add me!0 -

Love this thread! Always like to find other endurance athletes because I can learn so much from them!
I started running back in November 2010(at 282#) and worked my way up to a mile. For 2011 I made it my goal to do 1 5K/month starting in April and have managed to do just that - have done 5 5K's so far this year. I'm still really slow and have a lot of weight to lose, but running (and now biking) has become an addiction for me. Since November I've lost about 47# and I know that the running has played a huge role in that.

Hey Runners! How is everyone doing this week? I was away with the family but managed to get two 10ks in - one speed workout and one (theoretical) tempo... it was so humid I had to take some breaks. I haven't weighed myself since I've been back. Don't think it was too damaging, but we shall see tomorrow.
Loved reading about your goals and progress. Amazing goal-setting and race-planning motivation. I need to get my fall - winter 2011/2012 race plan laid out.0 -
I did really well this week! 7 miles easy, 4 miles with sprints (no walking between!), and 12 miles easy!
This week I will do 8, 4, 8, I think. Kinda sorta taper before the half on the 17th, then starts the hard stuff for the full!0 -
Sounds like a good plan Katie! I'm into my taper for the half. Did a tempo 6 miles today. 6 miles slow on Saturday and then a few miles (maybe 3 or 4) on Tuesday and Thursday next week.
I've got a half pound or so to go to get to my goal weight for this run (132) and then the last 2 pounds will be the challenge for my fall runs.
Hope everyone is doing well!!0 -
Hi everyone! So glad to find this thread. I'm on a running break at the moment while I go to PT for my IT band. I had no idea that it was so bad until the therapist started working on it. We suspect my many years of walking caused the problem originally. I've only been running for about 6 months, so that seemed to have really messed it up. Hoping to complete PT soon, so I can get back to running. I really miss it! I've been doing some strength training and riding the stationary bike, but they are just not cutting it for me.
You folks who are training for half and full marathons really amaze me! How do you do it? I don't know that I have the stamina. I've started with 5K's, want to improve my time with them before I take on any longer distances.
Thanks for the tips on walking breaks. I agree with walking at water stations, so you can actually drink your water. :drinker: But I'm excited to hear that walking breaks can actually improve your overall time. I will have to try that.
Anyway, here's info. about me:
Name: Kathy
AGE: 40
HEIGHT: 5'9''
START WEIGHT FOR CHALLENGE: 148 (estimate - scale at home broke and haven't bought a new one yet)
GOAL WEIGHT FOR CHALLENGE: 142
ANY SPECIAL DIET: not really, trying to eat more protein
UPCOMING RUN 1: (possibly, if PT says ok) October 8th - 5K
UPCOMING RUN 2: November 12th - 5K (I'm doing Girls on the Run with my 8 year old, so I really won't be running for time, mostly for fun!)
UPCOMING RUN 3: November 24th - 5K
RUNNING GOAL: Under 33 mins. (I've run two 5K's so far - April (36 min) and June (33 min) - I'm hoping to at least stay steady and possibly reduce my time)
WEIGHT GOAL: 1420
