I love my Mirena and it probably literally saved my life because I was suffering from really, really bad Menorrhagia for a few months and became extremely anaemic. It also affected quality of life in a big way because I basically had a continual period, had to wear dark clothing all the time, sleep on towels and was scared to go places that might not have good toilet facilities. Plus I was burning through sanitary products like there was no tomorrow. The mirena put a stop to the bleeding - in fact, my period has pretty much vanished altogether. I've actually lost all my weight (32kg) while having the Mirena in so it's definitely not impaired weight loss in any way.

I'm lucky though - I have friends who can't have Mirena because it affects their mood/mental health quite badly ...

I feel you! Have been though all that the last few months, including receiving a unit of blood a few weeks ago because my crit, hemoglobin, and ferritin were so low.

However, taking three Prometrium (a bio-identical progesterone) for a few days, then two for a few days, and now one per day reduced and then stopped the bleeding.

Gained 10kg in the past five years. I've been able to shed a few kilos when i go on extreme diets, but i hate that, it's so unhealthy. I cycle 22km per day 3-5x per week, i walk 10-20k steps daily, for the past 6 weeks i've been eating 1200 calories per day and what? 1.5 kilo loss. In SIX weeks. I've had Mirena for 6 years (on my 2nd) and I think it's quite clear the doctors are mistaken when they say it cannot lead to weight gain.

it actually says in the side affects "may cause weight gain" and most doctors tell you this...

But if it is real weight gain and not just water retention then it's because you are eating too much not because you are using BC....

Girl, get a damn life or at least start your own mirena-obsessed board and get out of this one.

Yes, I feel this. I'm getting mine taken out this Friday because I have never weighed past 135 and now I can't get passed 150 no matter what I do. I'm going to let my body just reset (I'm currently not sexually active and well CONDOMS) for like 3-4 months to see how I feel.

One thing to ponder, that I rarely read about, is what about sensitivity to Progestin? Doctors and other commenters are quick to say you gain weight (only) when you eat too many calories for what your body needs; but I rarely see room for a discussion about water retention due to an allergic reaction or sensitivity to Progestin. I wake up almost every day with soreness especially the joints in my feet and ankles), bloat and an overall blah. Three weeks ago I put myself on a 1200 calorie diet and took up walking 45-60 minutes/5 days a week. Only 1.5 lbs down and that was only after I had my cycle ( still having week long spotting episodes more than a year after insertion).
Earlier this year ( right before covid), I was on a mission to figure out what was happening to me. I got my blood and saliva tested- all came back normal. But none of the test included sensitivities to Progestin, only estrogen. So when people chime in and say all is good with their mirena, I don't doubt it, everyone's got different chemical make-ups; but lets agree that when people express frustration over weight gain, depression and soreness, that it is real and people have had relief from the symptoms and side-effects with removal. I'm also inclined to add that some people's bodies may be swelling or be over in distress due to a foreign object being in their body.

I despised my mirena and had it out last year. I had 0 interest in sex with it in, it made me moody, and I gained a bunch of weight. Now, I wasn’t trying to lose weight back when I had it in, BUT I also didn’t change my eating habits after getting it and I gained 20 lbs.

Well.. where do I start with my mirena coil journey! ‘Hell’ is the word I’d use.
I suffer with endometriosis and had a laparoscopy in 2019, my private specialist recommended the mirena coil as a progesterone only option as this helps symptoms of endometriosis. I thought this would be a great idea seeing as my symptoms before my laparoscopy were awful. I had fibroids, large cysts on my right ovary and severe scarring on the outside of my uterus. I had the coil inserted at the same time as my operation, so when recovering I thought the pain was from the surgery. After feeling the same pain for 6 months following from this I started to realise maybe it was the coil that still hadn’t settled in. This is when I noticed the weight gain, and by weight gain it was SO noticeable. I have always been a slim build, weighing 8.5 stone before having the coil inserted. Just 6 months after I was over a stone heavier and the weight gain didn’t stop there!! I thought I was going bonkers as I couldn’t lose it, I was having personal training sessions as well as running and I was putting on weight not losing it. The bloating made me look 6 months pregnant and was just embarrassing. I couldn’t wear fitted clothes anymore without people asking when I was due, I just lost all confidence. If it wasn’t for the voice in the back of my mind telling me the mirena coil was helping my endometriosis I would have got it taken out a lot earlier. Here I am 1 year 2 months later and today I have had the damn thing removed AT LAST! This is my first time reading this forum but it assures me even more that I’ve done the right thing now. It’s way to early to notice any difference but I already feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I will update on here how I’m feeling over the next few weeks/months, but I’m hoping from reading other comments that I will finally start to lose the nearly 2 stone I’ve gained!!
I’m sure the mirena coil works for some people out there, but I am so glad I’ve had it removed and will never go back to it.

Sezxy Stef, you have been going out of your way to invalidate other women and their problems with Mirena for almost ten years now - girl, you ok? I hope Bayer is paying you to relentlessly promote them because otherwise you seem to just enjoy invalidating others own experience. Seems depressing

It's been 2 years since she posted. And you joined just to drag up a zombie thread to point it out. Something certainly seems depressing...
