I have developed a hate for these things recently. My hubby loves them for the great value, but it's soooo hard to control myself when I go to them!!

We go occasionally but not often. I have found that if I eat something small before we go (like a small salad or sandwich) I do not eat as much because I am not starving but it drives my hubby nuts because he says that it defeats the entire purpose in going :)

I love buffets because I can have tiny portions of everything I want :) Usually when you order a meal in a non-buffet place you get a ginormous portion that I never eat, even with leftovers at home... I wish things came in smaller portions and buffets are great for that :)

Yes - they are a love/hate relationship for me as well. Love the assortment of foods - - hate trying to control the portion. Usually if you don't overeat at a buffet you are not getting your moneys worth since the food is usually made cheaply.

Hate them...who can eat that much food to equal the cost and stay at a healthy level. Mostly hate them because all of the other people have been over food I am going to eat.

HATE. I can never eat enough to justify going there in the first place....plus why do that to myself?

I cannot go to them. I always over eat when I do. I want to try everything, and even if its a tablespoon of all that fattening its way too much.

I loved them enough to gain 110 pounds. I just don't have the willpower to go to one.
  • I have to say love, I just went to an asian buffet last week. I like to go when they first open though, you never know how long stuff sits out, that gives me anxiety.

You don't have to pig out, I just drink water before hand and during and eat slow, it is great to get a little of each kind of sushi and what ever else you want.

I think of it this way, nice restaurant 20 dollars or more a person, typical buffet like 8 bucks for lunch, even if I don't pig out I still feel i've got my moneys worth. Eww, except old country buffet that place is nasty!

Hate! But for me, it's a food safety & other people's germs issue. LOL Buffets just kind of gross me out.

i do not like alot of them for the simple fact that they dont really offer any good food. besides the ones at casinos. which i love. you can go out to eat and can choose healthy foods for yourself. i usually get a good salad, fruit, steamed veggies, and mashed potatoes. if they have grilled chicken i will get that or seafood
  • i dislike them but used to love chinese buffets...then i realized that they contributed to my fatness lol

I hate them for a completely different reason. Last time I ate at a buffet, years ago, I watched a kid wipe snot on his hand, then pick up the mashed potato spoon, serve himself, then lay the spoon back in the pan, contaminating the whole pan. I sat my plate down and walked out, without even asking for a refund. Have not been back to a buffet since. I avoid potlucks too, for very similar reasons.

I like them - I stick with mostly items from the salad bar, the vegetables and some lean meat. I've only gone a couple of times since I started MFP, but when I did go, I allowed myself 1 small splurge item - I liked that because I can have a treat without worrying about having a whole box / container / batch of something in the house tempting me.

Plan ahead with enough calories available to be able to relax though - I couldn't do it with only 400 - 500 calories left in the day. I would want at least 700 +. I did it once with 600, but it was hard.

I found a half pair of dentures at sizzlers salad bar ...never again
  • For me, buffets are kind of depressing. All the food just sits there... many buffets have really low quality food, they want you to feel full right a way, so fat and sugar are added to everything. Except maybe in Vegas they have decent ones with $35 per person... but I much rather go to sit down place and spend my $35.

    Here is my theory....

IF they are offering all the food I can eat for $9.99 it's probably horse crap I don't want to be eating anyway.
  • I don't care for them at all...mainly, because I get grossed out everytime I think of all the people who have touched the serving spoons. Since, I am constantly using my antibacterial, I can't enjoy the meal. If I have to go, I usually get up one time for food and maybe dessert.

We typically don't go because they are "the devil" in my eyes with all that food! However, we made an exception and will be going this coming Sunday to a local hotel for brunch as a celebration for my husband's promotion... only one mimosa, only one mimosa...

My love of buffets is half of my problem. I'd like to try going to one again some time just to have little tastes of everything. We'll see how it goes.

I love them because you can eat how much you want and only pay like 20$.
But you gotta admit most of the food is bad quality, especially in american buffets, BUT if your talking about Indain buffets, I'm in!

Hate 'em! I've only been to a buffet a few times since calorie counting and for one, it's hard to estimate what calories are in what...two, everything ends up tasting a lot worse than I remember and then it's even HARDER to calculate, and three, I end up leaving hungry and eating SO many calories for that day.

    I hate them!

    1. I don't like the idea of how many people have touched the serving spoons with their dirty hands (I really hate it when the handle is lying in the food).
    2. I don't like the idea of all kinds of people breathing around the food.
    3. The food often seems like its been out too long.
    4. I think the food is usually subpar - usually not good quality and usually not made very well.
    5. I don't eat much at them - just sample a few things - and the calories still add up way to quickly.

I did go to a buffet/brunch at the Four Seasons in Houston, and I seem to remember that that one was actually quite good though.

i'm fine with Buffets because if i know what i want, that's what i put on my plate and i tend to be pretty good.

what i hate are banquets. you go to a restaurant and think that the banquet is such a great deal because you're starving but the food just keeps coming and you eat and it you get full and it hurts. =(
  • Hate hate hate buffets. No idea what's in the food, hard to estimate serving sizes, and the food is not being put into an environment I'm comfortable with all the time. I'd rather pay more (or less, usually) for exactly what I want.
