most of us have heard chocolate milk is great after you work out. can anybody help straiten out my knowledge on it because this is the general consensus of what im told...
1 glass of chocolate milk (surprisingly from whole milke) is EXTREMELY good for you after you work out. if you look at the nutrition facts there 27g carbs and 9g protein. the 3:1 ratio allows restoration of ATP and aids your muscles with energy to actually absorb, digest and rebuild from the the protein. also the thinkness from the fat creates a mucus coating over your stomach (that is usually warn down while working out). this gives moisture and protection to your stomach allowing for easier and more sufficient digestion.

from what im aware, beer is better than water for REHYDRATING you after a workout, but its got nothing to do with refueling or healing your muscles. Chocolate milk has a good balance of protein and carbs and is an ideal recovery drink for post workouts if you dont want to have a protein shake0 -

I don't know where the entire ATP thing comes in to this. Makes no sense. I am not saying the "macro nutrients" in the chocolate milk will not support an anabolic enviorment, they will. I am talking more about health. Is it healthy? Not at all. Somene posted the link to bodybuilding.com. It appeards this chocolate milk thing is for "bulking." Like I said before, it's not healthy. You know people who drink diet coke have a bigger waist line then the people who don't drink it... how is this possible if it has 0 calories? Because there is more to it then just macro nutrient's and calories. It's about acid in the body. As I told abby in email our common cold to cancer is based on your acidicty level. chocolate milk is highly acidic. I can't imagine a pro bodybuilder drinking a big glass of chocolate milk after a workout. I have a friend who is like 250 at 5% bodyfat year round. He would literally laugh at this chocolate milk comment.
If you want the proper macronutrient ratios, just add some oatmeal to your protein shake to get the right ratio. I can promise you it's a lot healthier than chocolate milk.0 -

Lads drink your chocolate milk if it fits your macros and calorie needs, this guy above has no idea what he is talking about.
Milk contains whey protein and the carbs is sugar which is high GI and this would aid protein synthesis. The acid that this guy talks about is between 6.4 - 6.8 and not something to be concerned about unless your lactose intolerant.

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me. When it comes to sports nutrition, there are no super foods. You don't need extra protein, you do need extra calories (and since your requirement for protein is based on your calorie intake you should therefore end up having SOME more protein but not an excessive amount. If you eat enough calories, match it with exercise and maintain a balanced diet then you will be able to build muscle, reduce body fat and maintain a healthy body. But that's just my humble educated opinion as a qualified sports dietitian. Who am I to say that all these fancy, expensive protein shakes with heavy marketing programmes are not legit (or stories about the miracle food chocolate milk for that matter)?0

Nonsense. Chocolate milk has a neutral pH. It is not acidic, at all. Pepsi is acidic. It's so acidic that they had to lobby Congress to change the requirements for "corrosive" HMIS warning labels, or they'd have to put one on every can.
You can get decent chocolate milk that isn't quite as processed, as well.
Also, milk is NOT mostly casein protein. By weight, milk is mostly carbs.

The research I've seen is from Joel Stager, and not surprisingly, is funded by the "Dairy and Nutrition Council." For those of you that don't know, that is an industry group...a dairy industry group.
I'm looking (briefly, I'll admit), and I cannot find a single instance of Stager's "research" being published in any peer-reviewed scientific or medical journals. When I read the details of the study, I noted that it only compared chocolate milk to other sports beverages, and not regular milk or even a placebo. I also noted that there were only 9 subjects in the study.
I find these details to be particularly troubling. However, low-fat chocolate milk has been a convenient and successful recovery drink for me. I can easily purchase 8oz individual cartons from Horizon organic. It's easy to toss in my gym bag, etc...
Now, I'd like to call to mind ANOTHER study that the dairy industry funded in the past. In "Obesity Research" Dr. Amy Joy Lanou, PhD published research claiming that consuming 24 oz of dairy daily aided weight loss. The dairy industry launched a multi-million dollar advertising campaign based on this.
Later, it was pointed out that the research was severely flawed, and that the dairy industry used misleading advertising. They were sued by MANY groups, including the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. http://pcrm.info/search/?cid=1190

Yes you are correct about the blood. Luckily, however, we aren't getting our chocolate milk intravenously. There is an ENTIRE SYSTEM in place that successfully digests the chocolate milk and parcels out the nutrients where they are most needed. It is safe and highly efficient. It's called the GI tract.

Or drink some VERY acidic substance, like 10N HCl

Cow milk has a pH range from 6.4-6.8, not very acidic in comparison to many fruits and vegetables that can have pH as low as 4.5.
While studies do say that acidosis is a detrimental state to be in, nowhere have I found nor has alkion presented an article that proves that consuming acidic foods is the CAUSE of ACIDOSIS. Instead most peered reviewed articles I've read state that acidosis is the result of one or a combination of several factors. Such as renal or hepatic failure, malabsorption of certain minerals, and so on.
Learn a thing or two about how the body buffers both acidic and alkali foods. A state of acidosis or alkalosis is a symptom of another issue, usually a process that is not performing like it should.0 -

You're right you don't get it by drinking chocolate milk. You get it by drinking chocolate milk, that nice piece of chicken, or fish, maybe some fruit, or some whole grains, etc... there are TONS of foods that are acidic. It's all of them put together that create an acidic state.

HOw is acidosis tested, by blood or urine samples. Acidic food produce acidic urine. I know you probably saw this picture on the other topic, so not posting it for you, posting it for everone else.
I got someone to test their saliva and urine, left side is mine, right side is theirs. top row is saliva bottom row is urine. I follow an alkalarine diet, they don't... tell me which one is more acidic, blue is alkaline, yellow is acidic, and tell me who is closer to a state of acidosis?? oh and guess what? This person eats a TON OF FRUIT, constantly eating fruits and nuts, you know the stuff we're told is "HEALTHY".
