    I know I'm old but when I was younger we would a get a ring that meant you were exclusive. Love should go in steps. People jump into things before they are ready and taking it slow is a good idea. I have 3 divorced children.

    Ugh, don't get me started on promise rings. I don't think they are appropriate for 15 year olds either. So far, the only times I've seen them given was more to mark their territory than anything.

    This always makes me laugh, growing up a lot of my friends and I got promise rings from our parents around the time we were confirmed into our churches, so for ME a promise ring is a virginity ring, not an "I love you lets get engaged...someday" ring.

    A promise ring, is baisically when you get engaged.
    But you cant afford to buy a real ring, because you are poor, or you have been fired, or you are still in school, etc.
    So you buy a fake ring, (costume jewellery), which is a promise that one day you will get a real ring, and then get married..

    When i was 16 my bf asked me to marry him and give me a promise ring.
    And even though he can now afford to buy me a £5,000 one.
    I want to keep this one because its special to me!

    Yep, they call them purity rings around these parts. The Jonas Brothers had them. One got married, the other seems to have taken his off, not sure about the third.

    So the fact that my father was disappointed in me for NOT sleeping around...that's not normal, right? I never got any effing promise ring.

    Even when you're 15, it doesn't really mean much ...

    I think about the girls in my high school who had them and they were some of the most messed up people!

    There was a Law & Order about the virginity ring thing. The girl who had it had beaten herself (with her boyfriend's help) to kill the baby so her father wouldn't find out. Very uplifting.

    Hubby and I dated for almost 5 years before we got married and now we've been married for 2.5 years.
