unemployed or not, ***it wasn't his*** so it isn't right.
Bullsh*t. It absolutely was his. If a kid hits a baseball into your yard, you have absolutely no obligation to return it. Now, most people would because baseball is awesome and why be a curmudgeon, but there is no legal requirement to return it.

well for starters, I dont think someone buries 150K in duffle bags in a yard if there isnt some sketchy or overly paranoid reasoning behind it.

If I owned the property and it had been there a while - Mine. Like a previous poster said, Id probably invest it for a period of time first. Donate a good chunk of it too.

if I found a wallet or something ID-able - Id make sure it got to its owner.

It doesn't say much, but it does say why the dude did turned the $$ in.

Now me, I'd do the same. I used to work for a bank. No way am I gonna keep that kind of money and try and spend it the way money tracking works now adays. I'd rather turn it in, find out it was stolen from a bank, get a reward for that then start spending it and then one day have the feds at my house askin me where I got the money from..... Now , if it's just a few bucks somewhere on the ground and noone's around... I'd keep it.

Appreciate the sentiment but between my perfect situational awareness and my eidetic memory I think I'll be okay.

For the record, I've already said given the sketchy circumstances, I'd probably turn it in.

I get your point....but we're not talking about misplacing something....and I'm sorry, but I'd never stash 150k on someone else's property! if I come back and it's gone, that is my own fault!

While it may be true that whoever left it wasn't wise, and probably didn't come by it honestly...if the property owner didn't put the money there, it didn't belong to them.

I don't care if you own the property. It wasn't your money.

*Legally,* you may not have to give it back, but look at the sh*thole our legal system is. Take that with a grain of salt.

Keep it, and you'll see--what goes around comes around.

if it was a check I would have gave it back but 150K cash buried in my yard would be called a gift from God

What if it's a morality test from God and not a gift?

and you may be right. or you may be wrong. i suppose if it happened to you, you'd find out one day.
  • If it was buried, its not a question of Your morality.
I think its like oil rights... if you buy property with a ton of oil, you just got rich. If you buy property with a ton of cash, you got rich lol.

There is no morality test when money is buried on YOUR property. There's a stupidity test that the person who buried a large sum of cash and forgot about it just failed. But no morality test.

For me, I would turn it in but not because of any moral reason. I'd be afraid of where it came from. Same as many others have said.

In fairness to mamaDaisyJ, the original poster posed the question as if the money found was buried. No need to split hairs in this specific situation. I would think someone who can spout out multitudinous platitudes can look at the theme of the question rather than the specifics and make a judgement.

You wouldn't consider it a morality test, so you'd be okay with it. I would consider it a test in morality, therefore, I couldn't live with myself for keeping it. To me, it has nothing to do with where it came from or if I'd be found out. I'm not bashing anyone for saying they'd keep it. Just offering my point of view.

Definitely turned it in, buried money would stink, your wallet and purse would reek with the smell. The guilt and smell would haunt you forever. If the money goes unclaimed you get it anyway.

so many people have insinuated that whether or not it was buried plays a part in the decision. buried-- left on your property, so you bought it when you bought the house, etc., so i pointed it out. i would think someone with such a large, pretentious vocabulary could have inferred that-- and also would not personally attack someone because they disagreed.

I'm not talking about this particular situation. I mean in general ... if something is buried on my property and the person who buried it has not contacted me to inquire about getting it back, I have no moral obligation to turn it in to the police or to make any effort whatsoever to find out who the property belongs to.

I might feel differently if I came home from work one day and discovered a duffle bag full of cash on my front porch. But that's not what I'm talking about.

When I buy a piece of property, generally that means I own what is on it. The trees, the rocks, buildings, whatever. There may be some stipulations on mineral rights depending on your situation.

If someone sold a house with cash or other valuables in a closet in the house, it's yours after closing. I fail to see why it would be any different for something buried in the back yard.

Now, according to the video in the article above, the money was not buried in this man's back yard. He went out to his garden, which was right beside the fence to his property, and found two duffel bags of cash in it. Obviously someone had dumped the cash over the fence, probably with the intent of coming back to get it. And it's also likely that this was money obtained from ill means, likely drugs.

Now if one day I happen to find bags of cash in my back yard, that's a different story. That guy was right. You would be foolish to try and hold onto that cash. Someone is going to come looking for that cash. And if they think you have it, who knows what they will do to you or your family to get it back. That guy did the right thing. He gave it to the cops, and he made it KNOWN he gave it back to the cops.

Maybe after a year or something they will get to keep it.

in all seriousness, like someone else said I'd be more worried that it was crime-money and a pack of drug dealers or something would come looking for me and my family.

    Exactly!!

    $20-$50 is one thing.
$150, 000 You turn it in.

All these people that said they would keep the money, and losers weepers. Trying saying that to a bunch of drug dealers with guns or mobsters coming after you for the money.

Really, people are that naive that they think they are entitled to it and can spend it?
Go ahead and spend it when your feet are in cement blocks at the bottom of a lake.

The person who found it, I think I heard them say.
"It would cause more trouble than good to keep the money"
