Do you really care about starving children?

RIght now, I do not.
As I am a single mother and quite busy making sure my own children are being taken care of properly.
But as soon as this isn't a one person household I'll donate much more.
RIght now I generally just have dollars added to my grocery bill for the food banks when they do that.0 -
i sure as heck do0

The amount of food Australia throws out each year. This is food from farms, things not pretty enough to sell, out of our own fridges. Can fill enough garbage trucks to bridge the gap between Aus and NZ. There is enough food to feed the third world just being produced from my country let alone from others. The issue is if you flood their market with cheap food you can ruin their economy also you can't blame them for having a lot of children they simply don't know better, seriously they are that uneducated about it! It's fine for us to sit back with our easily available contraception and tell poor countries not to breed anymore. Edited to add- yes it means more hands on deck to help out but also in some poor countries people have children without needing them to help simply because they don't have any contraception
Do I care that children are starving? Yes I do but financially support our family plus another adult we don't have any money to spare. I donate to my church which has once a year where you donate a ton of money 100% of it goes to where it says it will they don't take a % for themselves. I buy fairtrade where I can and if I can afford it. The extra couple of dollars with tea, coffee and chocolate is fine but when you are talking about clothes that is different.
But in saying this I am more likely to give time to closing the gap (aboriginals and non aboriginals have a 20 year gap in life expectancy), youth drop in centers, signing petitions, shelters ect than I am to give money to charities that aren't related to either the Salvation Army, the red cross or Oxfam. But that is more because I don't have a lot of excess funds and I buy my Christmas gifts from Oxfam0 -
Can't wait till they give us separate forums. I usually have great topics to talk about and debate.0

Think about the possibility that women do not have a choice about having children or not?
Thank you. I was trying to figure out how to say this in a nicer way than what was coursing through my brain. This sums it up nicely.0 -

It cannot happen soon enough.0 -

Agreed. I have tried typing my reply to this several times, but cannot because it will violate certain rules (my answer has a moral philosophy to it, so I couldn't do it properly here). I'll look forward to some of your topics.0 -

I care. I wouldn't walk away from a starving child and leave him/her to die. However, there are so many of them in the world that there isn't anything I can reasonably do while still being able to feed my kids and myself. So, no. I will not go out looking for them to try to save them all. But if one shows up on my doorstep I'll make him/her a sandwich which I call social services.0

I volunteer at the kitty shelter... To help house all those little kitties (starving children)... that were abandoned becasue they grew up or someone didnt neuter their pet. or whatever reason they ended up in the shelter. So I may not donate to human children, but I do donate to the furry ones.0

Wow. A lot of people only care about their own countries. I will try to forget this the next time a natural disaster hits another Western country and they are asking the world for aid.
I care and I donate money when I can.
Poor and hungry in a Western country is NOTHING compared to poor and hungry in 3rd World countries.
Pretty sure that Western countries help the rest of the world enough... I could name about 20 different countries that the U.S. has supplied aid to in the last 10 years. If not more... Hungry children are hungry whether it be in a Western country or third world nation.0 -
I care. I donate $ to a few causes, regularly including a global child feeding effort, a local program that stuffs poor kids' backpacks with granola bars & such, and our local Humane Society, other donations arent regular, but just case-by-case. I understand this reason, and have a similar feeling, though:I feel bad for them but not enough to be sending any significant aid to third world countries. It's like throwing money at a bottomless pit without actually solving the problems that cause the starvation.i was lucky enough to be born in a western relatively affluent and developed country. Others weren't so lucky. That could so easily have been me if the coin had flipped the other way.0
