I think that eating your exercise calories back is probably only necessary if it's a situation in which you're not giving your body much fuel if you don't. Lets say you eat 1500 calories for the day and then bust your butt and burn 1000 calories. That means that your net is only 500 calories...that's a crazy low amount for your body to run on. But if you eat 1700 and burn 500 then you're running on 1200, which isn't so bad.

Another thing to think about when it comes to eating your calories back -- have you bought a heart rate monitor yet? If not and you're just estimating your burned calories with MFP, it could be way off. I know before I got my HRM I was using MFP's estimates, and then after I started using a HRM I saw that MFP had been overestimating my calories burned by 100, 200, even 300 calories per workout session! So if I'd eaten all of those back, it would've been bad news.

Also, are you weighing your food or just using measuring cups? I watched this video about how far off measuring can be and I was shocked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjWPclrWVY

Now imagine if the food that your measuring is as far off the mark as it is in that video AND the calories burned that MFP is quoting you is a couple of hundred off. On top of that, lets say that you eat out once or twice and either have to completley estimate the number of calories you ate or rely on what the restaurant says the nutritional info is (which is often way off). All of that combined would definitely be a reason you could be not losing like you want! For me, I try not to eat all of my calories because I know how inaccurate my food estimations could be, and I know that even a HRM isn't fool proof.

Frustrating, isn't it? I always thought it was a simple "calories in vs. calories out" thing too. Ugh.

When I started using my HRM I found MFP was under estimating my calories by 200-300. So it really depends on the person, how much she or he has to lose.

214.4 today. Only down .6 this week. I was hoping for more of a loss, but it's better than gaining, so I'll take it.

YEAH! i lost 1.6 pounds since her last weigh-in! She's lost 23.6 pounds so far.

This is what no soda does. It allows me to lose instead of stall or gain.

I lost two pounds this week at weigh in-it was one and a half so I waited half an hour, had another wee and reweighed lol. That takes me to 212.5.
BUT I'm away from tomorrow morning until late Friday night. We're staying with friends so hopefully I can control the food somewhat but the gym will be missing :-(

How was everyone's weekend? Mine was nice...good balance of getting things done & quality time with my love!

OK so this keeps happening to me and IDK if it's normal or what... Every time I have a really hard workout, the next day I weigh 1 - 2 pounds more...My legs are very tight and sore feeling...could all that be from my sore muscles or is something else going on?

** Weigh-in for the week: 211.8. ** Yesterday I was 211...so frustrating for the scale to go up on weigh-in day! Oh well.

Kristin, YES, you can totally show a gain when you have sore muscles. I've had the same thing happen to me -- once the scale showed a 3 pound gain! -- so I looked it up. Apparently it's normal to show a gain on the scale after a really hard workout when you're all sore, because the sore muscles are basically sucking up every ounce of water they can in order to help repair themselves. So don't worry, what you're seeing is just water weight and should be gone soon. Frustrating, but at least it's not a "real" weight gain.

My car broke down so I have been stuck home today and probably will be all week until I can order the part on Wednesday, which is payday. I put out all my stash money on my father-in-law. That also means no going to Curves and Zumba this week. I did walk on the treadmill this morning and cleaned the house.

Yes, this! You probably have a bit of inflammation there, too...and that could cause a gain. You are still doing beautifully :)

Kelly ~ so sorry about your car! I was without a car for 3 months after a man ran a red light and totalled my van back at the end of January. No fun!! Hope you get it fixed soon!!

So, guys...I was thinking...are you trying new recipes now that you are trying to change habits? Do you have any food combos that you would have never thought would have worked well together? I used to make a really yummy sweet potato and apple and pork chop dish. I can't find the recipe, but it was divine!! Looking for something like that now...but I ran across this site while looking! Looks wonderful!!

    http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/chicken_sweet_potato_stew.html

I challenge you to make a new dish using ingredients that you would have never thought about using or using something you like that you would have never thought to use with another ingredient. Mine is above. I will do it tomorrow ;)

Jessie, I've been cooking A LOT more since I've been eating better too, and trying lots of fun new stuff! My absolute favorite cookbook right now is this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Peas-Thank-You-Simple-Meatless/dp/0373892403/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319721522&sr=8-1

The recipes are all meat-free, but I guarantee meat eaters will love them too. I know this because my bf is a big meat eater and he's been loving everything I've cooked out of there so far. :)

Pam, you are kicking some serious butt! Doing a 3 hour zumbathon AND socacize in one day? Wow! Have a great time!

Well after talking to my trainer, I am doing going to do the Socacize in the morning. I figure I will probably be burning close to 3900 calories just from the Zumba alone. So I am going to rest!

I have to say I'm feeling very confused lately on what I should be doing calorie wise! Its supposed to be easy CAL in VS Cal Out!

So if I set my calories and sedentary (not really sure I am but just ot be safe) to lose 2lbs a week its like 1380 cal a day on most days I burn 500 cal so that leaves me with 880 Net calories right? do I just leave it at that or eat back those exercise calories back to 1200? I was also told to look at a weekly bases and not to log my workout calories on mpf since the way I set my calories it already had it taken into account. but then I kinda feel bummed that I couldnt see everyday that I was busting my butt!

pammy I think you told me taht your trainor said that not to eat back exercise calories right? so being at 880 net calories most days of the week would be okay!

aghh I just feel so confused!

Honestly, I have always lost more when NOT eating my exercise cals back. And to be extremely honest, I did better when I was doing Weight Watchers and not working out at all. Not that I will stop working out, but it has sorta came to my mind on several occasions!!

I rarely if ever eat my exercise calories back. I don't see the significance in doing so. My diet under the recommendations of the personal trainer seems to work really well for me
