I believe MFP is Detrimental to my Freedom of Speech

I don't have any idea how long this post will be allowed up before it is deleted by the ever diligent moderators.

Due to ever increasing warnings from moderators I have made a decision to leave MFP. I feel that their control over what is said in a public forum is over the top. I don't want to swear or post suggestive material. I do however want the freedom to speak my mind in the public forum.

I believe that if I did not make the decision to leave, I would be complacently allowing myself to me edited or hushed by an outside party thus an infringement on my civil rights.

We have freedom of religion but not the freedom to discuss it with other adults on MFP.
We have freedom of political choice but not the freedom to express those choices on MFP.
As American citizens we have the freedom to identify ourselves as sexual beings but once again, not of MFP.
As was evidenced by the locking of my thread today we don't even have the right to question why these rules are in place.

Thank you to all of the friends I have made here. You have been wonderfully supportive and I have thoroughly enjoyed our discussions and debates.

I will be deleting my account in the next 24 hours if it is not deleted for me by the management.

Sincerely, Tiffany DePiano

Really? You're going let your health and fitness suffer because you think this site is taking away your freedom to speech? Wow.

I didn't know that a single site could dictate whether you were healthy or not. It's a tool, not the main source.

You have the freedom to not have your speech restricted by the government. MFP likewise has the freedom to dictate what is acceptable speech on its boards. And you, in return, have the freedom to get mad and leave. But MFP is not restricting your freedoms. The Constitution doesn't apply to private entities.

    MFP is not a country.

It is a private organisation. Therefore, freedom of speech does not apply.

If Mike wanted he could disable the forums and our ability to post comments on our walls entirely and only allow us to use the diary aspect of the site.

    His site, his rules. :flowerforyou:

Freedom of speech is a constitutional right in the framework of government versus citizens. The right to freedom of speech does not apply in someone's business, home, etc.

ETA: the above was blatantly plagiarized from some other forum with rules

The internet is not America. I think you are a clever and interesting person on this site, and I am sad to see you go. I hope you will reconsider. Many of us manage to post on this site while still being able to make our views and our personalities visible. You can too.

It's called terms of service. You joined and accepted this terms. Hardly a violation of your civil or constitutional rights. Go back to school.

I'm so sorry you are leaving but mfp is a private "club" and they can set their rules on what is allowed.. Best luck elsewhere and with your fitness journey

Your gripe is silly. That being said, I think the problem has to do with MFP creators becoming overwhelmed and having to select moderators by which they probably didn't screen very well.

This is a health and fitness site and that's what I intend to use it for. If I want to discuss other topics I take it to Facebook.

Thank you so much for setting me straight but I was not under the impression that MFP was a country. I am glad that we both know it though.

I have read my history however and there have been certain countries that use the same guidelines for their citizens. I for one will become healthy and fit without contributing to that kind of closed mindedness.

As evidenced by the ever increasing need for mods to police the site it appears that the attempt at control isn't really working out that well anyway.
  • Seems way over dramatic.

This site is a tool to help with weight loss, not a place to discuss religion. We all just suck it up, continue to log, and go about our day. I don;t really see the point and making a fuss about the forums

    good luck.

Thought you were leaving? Or did you just want people to beg you to stay and bash MFP with you?

I'll say it again: MFP is not violating your freedom of speech. No country holds private entities to the same standards as the government in that manner. That would be idiotic.

I think your missing something here. It is not "you" they are after, nor your rights. It's everyone elses. You are more than happy to freely express your thoughts, opinions and feelings on whatever subject you choose. Be advised that everyone out there has a choice to be exposed to it. Since this is considered a private forum, as you must be a member to post, regulations are in place. On that note, I am sure MFP is fine with you expressing yourself, however with rights comes responsibility. MFP respects everyones general rights to have a peaceful place to yammer about weight loss and life in general, and so, as to avoid interrupting everyone elses rights, the removal of political or religious threads is completely warranted. If you choose to risk your health in protest of what is clearly an action in everyone's best interest, well then by all means, that is your right. But in no way whatsoever, is MFP infringing on your rights.

Just so you are aware. . .
