Q: Does a mom carrying octuplets need to eat more?

A. "We recommend 300 extra calories per baby," Airoldi said, adding though that with eight babies, the extra calorie intake would not be feasible (multiply 300 by 8 ... 2,400 extra calories).

"They can't because their bellies are so big. So usually it amounts to trying to eat small frequent meals and trying to keep your calories up to at least 3,000 calories per day," he added.

I just thought that was kinda cool.
She is supposed to ADD more to her diet for the babies than I should be eating in 2 days!
I cannot wait to see pics of all those babies. How cool.
(And horrifying. Eight babies? I'd run away, never to be heard from again!)

8 babies at one time? That's not amazing. That's horrifying. The odds of giving birth to 8 healthy children during one prenancy is pretty much nonexistent. I can't imagine how terrified I'd be during the ENTIRE pregnancy :noway:

In my opinion...Eight is waayyyyy too many.

Both my mother and I we can't keep track of more than two or three kids at a time. In my family we have one kid and the next one comes a few years later when the first is somewhat self seficiant. Mommy had my sister and I 15 years apart.

Mommy didn't want a big family... she was #3 of 10

I agree TLC will be all over that

Sadly, there will be permanent damage to probably more than 1. How many weeks was she? How mental will she be when they come home...

    I know......I didn't even think octuplets was possible.......:frown:

What is the highest number of babies a mother has successfully been able to give birth to, healthy I should add?

I saw the report this morning... they were just born and will have to stay in the hospital for 8-10 weeks. She was (I think) 2 months early. They all weigh between 1-2 pounds. Poor little babies. Hopefully they are all healthy. They didn't really release any details about the family other than numbers (at the request of the family).

I know of triplets only. I was at their term delivery. I've also been at 23 week triplets and resuscitation was a nightmare. The first one came out crying! First 2 bad,bad deficits, and the 3rd one was shut off life support. Parents were very mad people. Mismanaged by their OB. Sad. Only 1 alive now.

I know when that lady in Iowa had those septuplets (I'm sure that's spelled wrong, but she had 7) that most of them ended up with something wrong with them. I think most ended up needing glasses, some had some pretty major developmental problem. I can't remember all the details of it, cause it was about 12 years ago, but they weren't as healthy as they would have been if they were single births.

30 weeks is not bad. Yoou take 1 week off/babe to relate to their development and maturity. So that =22 -23 weeks. Not good. They must all be on ventilators?

I'll never forget that. The whole situation was ugly. Took me a while to get over it. Cried at start of resuscitation cause i was alone.

The other thing is how do you pay for the medical care for that many babies that need to be in the hospital that long.

And with the economy like it is how to feed and diaper that many.

    Tax dollars?

I'm Canadian so WE the tax payers cover it. Ya the States would be a NIGHTMARE. They maybe will get money for endorsements and media pics and stuff and charity?

So medical expenses are covered... but how would you bear the expense of diapers, clothes, child care, etc, etc??

They would definately qualify for help in the US. With that many kids you would have to make something like $90,000 a year to not qualify.

There are tons of companies out there that will donate to them. I know when that other couple had all of those kids some one like Opera paid for the a new house with something like 5 washers and driers, and Pamper donated a 2 year supply of diapers and someone else gave them a van and someone else donated all the formula and baby food they could use, I think GM gave them a Van (By the way when companies do this they don't lose money, they just up the price everybody else pays)

My thought is that they chose to have that many, by un natural means. And they should have thought of those expenses before messing with mother nature

    From what I've read....

All 8 born alive, weighing between 1.5lbs and 3lbs.

They are all breathing on their own currently. No ventilators anymore.

The doctors expected only 7. The 8th was a surprise.

    6 boys, 2 girls.

They were 9 weeks early, I believe.

On the news, they keep referencing a set of octuplets born in Houston, but one baby died within a week.

[EDIT - took out the news link.. it was whacking out the page]

And to all you who thought I might be asking for my own personal situation----

The surviving ones from Texas just celebrated their 10th birthday..and I think all healthy.....

I am a mom of triplets that will soon be 24. They were 5 weeks early and ALL weighed around 5 lbs! I cant imagine how uncomfortable this woman might be ( or was from the sound of the posts) I felt ready to burst when I had mine and was VERY uncomfortable. But, my pregnancy occured naturally and I could not imagine having to make a decision ion on weather to abort some of them or not.

I hope things go well for her:flowerforyou:

Wow, natural triplets isn't very common. Congradulations.

I'm wasn't trying to say that she should have aborted any of them. Just maybe not have so many implanted to start with. I'm also one of those that thinks God does everything for a reason, and if his plan for you is to have kids he will let you have them.

I know this lady that had 2 boys, then her and her hubby tried for years to have another, and nothing. then 15 years of using no birthcontrol or anything she gets pregnant with a little girl ( they actually thought she had a tumor, and she went in to have it removed and they did and ultrasound and the doctor was like "Oh, you're 37 Weeks pregnant" She came home and had the little girl two weeks later)
