I have a Sony eReader and I LOVE it. It's not the wireless one, I have to plug it into my PC and download my books but it's really easy to use and the battery lasts forever. I don't think I can get magazines on this particular model.
I got my daughter a Kindle for Christmas and she can download magazines on it. They both seem pretty easy to use.0 -
Can't say much on the pros and cons. But all I can say is that I LOVE MY KINDLE! :happy:0
-
I love my IPAD2. Pro is I can use it for more then just an e-reader.
Con is I constantly spend money on ebooks!0 -
We have one of the older Amazon Kindles and love it. Really the only disadvantage is the no light at night thing.,.you need a light source for night reading. We are considering getting one of the new Kindle touch ones and giving our daughter (11) the old one...we are major readers.0

I have a kindle and I LOVE it..
I love the fact that I can also download the app for my ipad- pc. the kindle app for ipad is amazing specially for cooking books or stuff where you want to have the pictures coloured.
the kindle in it self is great to take with you when you are traveling - or getting to/from work- you can read outside with the sun on its brightest. it is also very very light.. The battery life is amazing0 -
I have a Kindle and LOVE it!!!0

Bought my wife a Nook and she loves it.....when it works. It will lock up and can't be reset. We are on our third replacement now. The customer service has been good, but annoying to be without while we ship it back and get a replacement. I would recommend the Kindle or Sony.0

I have a kindle and love it. The kindle fire is coming out soon and I will upgrade...it is in color and will have interent capabilities to do things like MFP, facebook etc.0

The Kindle Fire looks absolutely amazing. I'd say go with that. If you want something a little cheaper then go with the new kindle touch. The touch controls with the e-ink blow your mind. Haha. It's like touching a book and having it react.0
-
I really LOVE my Kindle. I like the no glare screen, and the fact that I can download straight to it..0
-
I downloaded the Kindle app for my smart phone. I really love it! A little small sometimes on my phone, esp when my eyes are tired at night. But I like the Amazon market for Kindle and it's easy to download and sort, etc.0

After research I bought the new touch screen Nook. No keyboard so it's small and light. Page turns can be done with buttons on both sides of the screen or by swiping the screen. All other functions are done by touching the screen, including a keyboard if you need to type something. At the time, the new touch screen Kindle wasn't out yet, so I didn't have that one to compare to at the time.
One extra bonus with the Nook is if you actually hang out at Barnes and Noble stores you can read any book for an hour a day on your Nook. I don't take advantage of that, but if you're a book store / coffee shop person, that can be a big deal I guess.0 -
I've got the regular B&W Nook and I love it!
It doesn't use proprietary software, like the Kindle, so you can check books out of your local library in EPUB format, and you don't have to use software to change its like you do with a Kindle.
And the battery life is stellar!0 -
If you are really into reading, you need a dedicated e-reader. An iPad or Kindle Fire or Nook won't work, because the battery life is awful. I have a third generation Kindle and the battery lasts for a month easily. And now they're super cheap. You can always find books for free.
The con is that you do need a light for the Kindle, but those are $5.00 Problem solved.
If you're looking for something that's going to surf the web, and you want to watch movies with it, get a tablet.
EDIT: I forgot that the Nook has exceptional battery life too! That is all.0 -
I have a kindle and I absolutely love it. , but if you are going to want to read magazines on your e-reader as well then you may want to get the Nook or another type of e-reader that comes in color.0
-
NOOK!!! I have the nook color and it's awesome!! and you can pick up wireless internet and use the web.0
-
I have a Kindle 4 , the new small one for $80. I love the thing.
Which e-reader you get depends on what you want.
If you just want to read books on it, then the Kindle 4 is the best one and the cheapest.
If you want to surf the web and have something that's a cross between an ereader and a tablet then the Kindle Fire or Nook color are the ones to look at.
There are all sorts of models in between with a mix of a 3G connection, touch screen....ect.
I personally like the Kindles better because for the most part they are less espensive and do most if not all of what a Nook can do.
One advantage for Nooks is you can buy books from any ebook store. The Kindle is centered around the Amazon store, but you can easily side load books in mobi format (sold by some other stores) or you can download Calibre and convert files to mobi and then side load them.0 -
I love my Kindle 3G WiFi!! I take a train to work so it's perfect. I don't have to hook it up to a computer, I can download books right there on the train. And I even have a Kindle app on my Droid so I can look for books there and send it to my Kindle. And they just started a Kindle lending library.
I actually want to get the Kindle Fire next.0 -

Yes, but the Kindle Fire will be color and comes out soon cheaper than the Nook color.0 -
I think this poster meant the Nook Color. The regular Nook IS a dedicated e-reader with a battery that will last 1 or 2 months.
Anything with an e-ink screen will have really good battery life. Anything with a color LCD screen will not.If you are really into reading, you need a dedicated e-reader. An iPad or Kindle Fire or Nook won't work, because the battery life is awful. I have a third generation Kindle and the battery lasts for a month easily. And now they're super cheap. I have a Kindle (3G+WiFi), and I love it. It's pretty customizable if you google "kindle hack" - you can change the screensavers and font families and stuff. Not sure if the Nook has it too, but I absolutely love the dictionary feature - that is, when you move the cursor to the front of the word, a definition will pop up. I hadn't realised how many words I simply shrugged off when I didn't know them and couldn't contextually understand the meaning of them...
I'm given to understand that the e-ink of the Kindle is marginally clearer than that of the Nook, but I'm sure it's not that huge of a difference.
Another great thing about the Kindle is the fact that it's an Amazon product. Amazon's got great customer service, and they're really, really good about replacing things that break. I lug my kindle around in my backpack every day, and I've never had a problem, but I guess the screens are relatively fragile... so that might be something you want to consider too.0 -
I looked at the Nook, and I liked it. It was OK. Then I got a Kindle as a gift. I LOVE it. I guess the biggest pro/con for me is being able to load books right onto it from my computer. I don't always have to buy from Amazon, if I've got a book in the right format that I've d/l then I just drag and drop right into my Kindle.
The other thing I didn't like about the Nook was the back lighting, which is weird I know because hey, you can read in the dark, but that hurts my eyes (similar to a computer screen) I like the way the Kindle is set up. So yes you have to buy a light in order to read your Kindle in the dark. But really, the only time I'd need something like that would be travelling. I have some problems with insomnia, so I don't read in bed, I can't.
I am asking for the fancy leather cover with light for my birthday. Just because it's pretty hard to shop for me and this is an easy gift for the hubby and kids to get me.
We are getting the newest Kindle ($79 basic model) for my MIL. It's going to be perfect for her because she's pretty technology um ignorant (?) I'll be loading it up with a bunch of books for her and then she'll have something to keep her busy while she's in Florida.
Really, it's up to personal choice. I know Nook reads epub format and Kindle reads mobi & pdf. But I love my Kindle!0 -

Any ereader with e-ink screen will need a light if you read in poorly lit areas. Some Nooks have e-ink screens as do the Kindles. I don't agree with battery life, most of them last plenty long. If you use them every day you may have to charge them but I don't see it as being a big deal if you have to charge it everyday. However, that's mostly the color, touch screen ones, the Kindle 4 has excellent battery life.0 -

Good point about customer service. When I had a nook and talked to others with them they complained about the poor customer service. I never had a problem with my Nook so I didn't need to contact CS.0 -
I have an older Kindle (I think they are called "Kindle Keyboards" now). I don't use the keyboard, so I would probably get one without that if I were buying a new one. But I would not get a color screen. The great part about the black and white Kindle screen is that it is much easier on the eyes. Back lit screens strain my eyes a lot more. I spend all day staring at a computer screen, the last thing I want when I am trying to unwind is to stare at another computer screen. The e-Ink screens feel just like reading a paper book to my eyes. But yes, you will need a little reading light (my case has a great built-in one).
AND, just announced (today, I think), if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can borrow (some) books from Amazon instead of purchasing them (plus all of the other benefits of Amazon Prime membership like free movie streaming and free 2-day shipping).0 -
For the best screen out there, you can't go wrong with the iPad's. I bought an iPad2 a few months ago and just starting goofing off on the reading part, and couldn't believe the screen! (I ended up returning it for other reasons). The other big perk is that you can use the iPad for all the brands - they have their own bookstore, but you can also use Kindle and Nook (Barnes & Noble) apps, and read the books from there as well. Storage is hands down better too (plus you can use it as a movie player, among all the other typical iPhone/iPad junk).
However, it does come at a price. It's easily twice the price of the newer Kindle's and Nook's.
I'm using an older Nook's of my moms (about a year old) and big difference (we bought her a color Nook for Christmas last year). My mom loves her color Nook. The Kindle Fire looks pretty nice as well, but no review I've read compares to the iPad screen.
For just an e-reader it wasn't worth the price to me (already have an iPhone and Nano for music), but if my next job/contract requires more travel, I will get it again for the book and movie functionality.0 -
I have a Kindle (keyboard version) with wi-fi. I like it a lot more than I thought I would! I was hesitant, because I didn't want to read a book on a screen. But the e-ink is as close as you can get to reading a real book. It took a week or so to get used to, but it doesn't seem strange anymore.Only downside is you need to read in pretty good light. All I want to do with it is read books, so it serves its purpose for me. I don't need the pics/color. But I did download a few free games. My aunt has a nook and kids really seem to love looking at the picture books on it. I don't think I could get past the screen glare/backlit screen. It depends on what your needs/wants are. If you're a serious reader, I'd recommend the Kindle.0

Here's an updated link of the comparison of all the e-readers out there on C-Net (I was doing my research a little).
