Nook, Kindle? Or Other

Thanks! I saw that article - looks like this month the new e-readers will all arrive. I'm leaning towards the Nook (basic $139 version) because I think it uses the Adobe format, which might become more mainstream. I don't think I want to use it to surf, but I'm not sure...

I have both the Nook Color and have owned all the black and white version of the kindle in various sizes. Here are my thoughts. If your mainly using it just for books - hands down go with the Kindle. Get the one with 3G if you want to be able to download books from almost anywhere (you can also check your email and basic websites) Only downside is the lack of a touch screen and color.

This is where the Nook color comes in. GREAT as an overall device. Does nothing AMAZINGLY but does a GOOD job with video, web, email, books, pdfs and digital magazines in full touchscreen color. Also has a backlight which makes it nice for reading in dark places (whereas the kindle does not)

If you're mainly using it to read - I'd go with the Kindle. If you travel outside the house or free wifi zones go with 3G

Battery life on the Kindle is AMAZING! The Nook - ehhhh

I have the Nook Color. I started using it in March and have not had any issues. I think the battery life is fantastic and love all the options for books. I also have the app on my phone and computer which will store my entire library. It is great!!

I have a reg Nook - with the e-ink (not a nook color) i don't know why everyone seems to think the only nook is in color -I like it over the kIndle because I can get library books. You can buy books from any online site that sells e-books as long as you have the right format. My battery life depends on how much i read on it - this nook does not have a back light so like with the kindle you would need a light to read but if you are going to use it for only reading I would sugges the nook. Now if you want internet etc i would go with an ipad and download the Nook or Kindle app. I have never had a problem with my nook locking up or freeezing either

I prefer good ol' paperbacks. I can leave them lying open on a table in a restaurant while I go to the restroom, and they are still there when I get back. If I walk away and forget them while I'm at the airport I don't have to go rushing back to get it, praying the whole way that they are still there and not stolen, I can just pick up another copy when I get to my destination for $5.99. If I leave it sitting on the top of my car and drive away I don't cry for three days. I can pick up a box of them at a garage sale for $5.00 and read for a month, then at the end of that month sell them in my garage sale and get my $5.00 back.

Sorry, just not giving up my paperbacks. :flowerforyou:

I have a Nook Color and I LOVE it. I can surf the web and download apps, it's great. The battery life is fine and my experience with customer service was great, too. I recommend it highly.

I have a Kindle and I love it--- I haven't had any issues with it. The battery lasts a long time and the non-glare screen is nice. I was a little surprised at the cost of the books-- they run around $10, which is more than a paperback. But I'm a Navy wife so not having boxes and boxes of books to move is nice.

I still like paperbacks too actually. For me the e-readers are pretty handy on my elliptical machine (it's really hard to turn pages when I'm going full out. The readers I can just touch the screen and it turns the page).

Amber - I agree with you both on the cost (was a little higher than I expected - especially when there's nothing to really do to create them after the first copy), and the less weight when moving. When we moved back down to Phoenix from Vegas, I must've had 10 book boxes from my office alone!

They are also really handy for travel. You don't have to know what books you will feel like reading on the plane -- just load a bunch on and decide later.

I still check out a lot of books at the library, but even libraries are increasingly having eBooks available to check out.

I have a "Kindle Keyboard" (& have a Fire on preorder) & adore it. I take it everywhere with me; my SO is even jealous of the attention I give it =P. You just can't beat Amazon's customer service, & with the new releases there are Kindles for every taste.

This exactly. My Nook has e-ink and I love it.
Whatever you get, make sure you get a cover for it. I didn't get one for my immediately and some how managed to scratch the screen a few days after purchasing it. It's a small blemish and doesn't affect the functionality of the nook but it is still a bummer.

Thanks, I'd heard from a friend that has Nook that that was a reason to choose Nook over Kindle.

There's the kindle for $79. Personally, I have the kindle keyboard and have given away and sold several Nooks even though they were a lot cheaper than my kindle at the time. My kindle was $139+tax and the nooks and nook colors were 50% off MSRP during the holidays last year. I even have the HP touchpad still sealed and thinking about selling it whereas I'm keeping my kindle. That's how much I love it.

You can also borrow library books with the Kindle now. I bought the kindle way before that option was available though, because there was a workaround for that.

If you decide to get a Nook, get a refurb. Much cheaper and I heard they're as good as new and most with the same 1 year warranty as a new one if you buy from B&N's Ebay store or some other retailer. Just make sure you get one with a 1 year warranty. The Nook & Nook color refurbs will be dropping in price as we're closer to Christmas.

Especially with the release of the Kindle Fire, B&N are going to be dropping prices to be more competitive.

Also, since stores sell both devices, why not buy both of them and return the one you don't like?

I love my kindle, no complaints. I personally love to turn pages of a book but, in the long run it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly

O LOVE my kindle, my hubby bought it for me. battery life is AMAZING and unlike the ipad, it takes a micro usb so can charge on our phone chargers and even on the car charger for long road trips. I don't know how he did it but my dh has put over 2000 books on mine!

I have a 2nd gen Kindle an LOVE it ~ I'm fixing to upgrade to the Kindle Fire. I like that I can look for books from my kindle, and dont have hook my kindle up to the computer to down load them. All kindles come with Wi-Fi for that purpose, mine has an 'experimental' section that has internet, but its nothing to brag about. I can also download music onto it, the ONLY thing about that, is you cant pick songs nor can you skip one.

I have the nook e-reader and my husband has the nook color. WE love both! We LOVE sitting at the local Barnes and Noble/Starbucks and reading. My daughter borrows my hubby's to play angry birds and we can read any book we want for an hour a day at BN.
I've read several good books that way!

Bought my wife a Nook and she loves it.....when it works. It will lock up and can't be reset. We are on our third replacement now. The customer service has been good, but annoying to be without while we ship it back and get a replacement. I would recommend the Kindle or Sony.

i have the nook and mine has never done this but i bought the plain black and white one because i was worried about the glare on the screen of the "color" version. i love it but still read "real" books too!

Ours is the black and white model as well. Strange that we would get three bad ones.

My mom has a Kindle with a keyboard (she got it last Christmas) and I have been debating on whether I want one or not. Well, I'll be getting my Kindle Fire next week and I can't tell you how excited I am!!!

Nook for sure. I have one, they are so awesome. You may want to get the nook tablet that was just announced yesterday, doesnt look to shabby

I got a Nook from the library. I hated it. Its not backlit and just isnt what I thought it would be. Im going to get a Kindle Fire for Christmas hopefully. It has everything I want.
