My friend wants me to go to subway with her on Tuesday (if I have the $$$). Should I? What do I get? OR should I pretend I dont have the $$$?

Do you really want to go? Are you really worried about calories, or just don't know what to get in general?0
-
subway can actually be really healthy..you just have to get the right stuff and none of the bad crap.0
-
Yes, go! Subway is a delicious and healthy(ish) treat! Get the 6" ham or turkey on whole wheat, skip the mayo and cheese and your sandwich will be under 350 calories (albeit a bit high on the sodium count). Subway.com has a "build your own sandwich" function -- perfect at finding out the exact calorie count of your sandwich. Enjoy!!0

Subway isn't a terrible place...lots of good choices...wheat bread, skip the cheese, mustard instead of mayo, and lots of veggies. Just be aware of the sodium content. I believe the roast beef is better than the ham or turkey in that regard.0

Subway can be very low calorie if you watch what you order.
Their website has a sandwich builder where you can build your sandwich with all the topings and see the exact nutrition information before you buy it.
One thing about eating out in general.. even subway.. is sodium can get pretty high.. I would suggest drinking extra water that day and watching your sodium on meals... (for example the spicy italian is VERY salty)
The sandwich I get is
Wheat Bread
Turkey breast
no cheese
all veggies (except olives..)
and a low fat dressing such as zesty italian or mustard..
(6 inch is 290 calories)
Cheese and mayonaise add a lot of fat..
veggies! load up on veggies.. pickles and jalapenos have salt but are great calorie wise
Turkey and Ham are the lowest fat meats there
tuna is one of the higher in fats because of how much mayonnaise they add
any other questions let me know... I work there.. haha0 -
I LOVE subway..I usually get a sandwhich once a week.
I get a 6 veggie sub NO cheese and lite mayo on wheat bread. Its roughly about 250-260 calories and very filling0 -
Well from a technical standpoint, Subway is one of the few reduced calorie choices out there.
Assuming your not loading mayo and melted cheeses, or greasy choices like meatballs of philly steak etc.
But something more moderate like ham, turkey, chicken with whatever veggies and vinegar, light oil, or mustard are the safest. Cheese is okay too as long as your accounting for it and its not slopped on.
But don't believe the BS of wheat vs white. Subway doesn't use real wheat breads, but rather white/wheat mixed at a 75/25%. Not wheat like the 5 ingredient, heavy kind that surrounds the whole grain hype for healthy eating. Your just as down if you eat their wheat as you are eating their french bread. Consider Subway rolls as a white flour food. In moderation its okay. But if your eating subway everyday, or similiar white foods, your not eating necessarily healthy at all! You get the same "nutrition" as if you ate calorie counted lasagna, spaghetti etc.
Subway also uses mass processed deli meats with Sodium Nitrates. Food preservatives which fly in the face of healthy eating.
But assuming processed food health isn't your main driver, but rather calories are. Subway offers some best options available.0 -
I had a chicken breast salad when we went the other day - and even opted out of dressing. I find with cucumber, tomato and hot peppers on it, it's moist enough. If you get the dressing on the side just dip your fork in the dressing before you dig into the salad - you use so much less dressing.0

if you want to go, get whatever you want and fit it into your macros, it's not really rocket science, nor do you need approval from others to eat out0
-
Really? I love subway, I often get it for lunch.
That said I'm picky with meats and things so all I get is a 6" Veggie Delite toasted with no cheese on wheat bread. That's 230 calories and absolutely delicious.
Don't be fooled by the wraps, a veggie delite wrap with no cheese is 230 calories and much less filling than wheat bread.0 -
My subway is a 6inch turkey breast on 9 grain wheat with no cheese, lettuce, tomato, spinach, cucumbers, pickles, green peppers, salt and pepper and mustard. its yummy.0

I love subway.... ok I want it now...0

I love subway! I always order a child's sub (4") with Turkey, lettuce, tomato, one slice of provolone, bell peppers and salt and pepper. Just a tad of mustard on a whole wheat roll. Some places let you order it solo. If not, get the child's meal and add some baked chips--it'll come with apples or carrots, a drink and a toy. Healthy, low fat, low cal, and you get a toy--just like when we were kids! You're in!0

The nice thing about Subway is that the nutritional information is on line, (as are most chain restaurants.) Planning ahead is half the battle.0

Whats with all the hate on the cheese. it really doesnt add THAT much to your day and adds some nice flavor, if you ask me.0

Wow, a tad on the snarky side, aren't we?0 -
I eat at subway 3-4 times a week np.... I usually get the soup and sandwich deal and eat the soup... and give the sandwich to my son.......... it's always under 300 calories.... it's listed in your food guide... just do a search for subway under foods and find something that works for you0

I guess people who don't want or need support shouldn't post in your world?0 -
I'm confused, is this a question? If you don't want to go then tell her you don't want to and you can agree on something else. If you don't know what to get, their website lists their menu and nutrition facts and I'm sure people who love subway here on MFP can make great suggestions. If your worried about the money, they are very reasonably priced. I guess I don't know how to answer this because I'm not sure what your asking.0

OP is asking folks what she should order if she decides to go to Subway with her friend. If she has the money, she wants to go but is concerned about eating at "fast food".0 -
If you have the time to work out that day and calories are not much of an issue, go for roast beef. It'll help cut back on sodium. A 6" turkey on wheat with veggies n things can be around 350 cals, the roast beef I get is about 420 cals, but you can save up to 400 mg of sodium depending on what else you get on the sandwich.0

Subway is a good treat if you haven't been out in awhile. As others have mentioned there are a lot of healthy choices to make. One of the good things about Subway is that there are options to look at before you order where they have broken it down to the amount of fat, calories, protein etc in the healthier of the options. I prefer roast beef or turkey myself, but you have a lot of options. At the same time they have to condiments split into two different groups; low fat, and 'full flavor' which really means fat
I would go out if I were you, I like getting out and being with my friends when I can. Also, if you have time you can always go on the Subway website look at the nutritional values of sandwich components, this way you can have your sandwich figured out before you even go. Anyway, have fun.0 -
Black Forest ham and Turkey Breast on wheat, no cheese, all veggies you want and spicy mustard or yellow mustard is 280 calories per 6" sub0
-
I LIVE at subway! lol I either get a 6 inch flat bread turkey breast w American cheese tons of veggies and no dressing for 330 cals. OR broc and cheese soup for 180 cals. It's worked for me!0

Don't skip olives....one of the healthiest things you can eat0

Exactly the same for me0 -
I eat Subway twice a week. I am a bread-a-holic and one day I saw a girl making her sandwich into a salad. I am the kind of girl that likes to make sure I am FULL and I find it hard to get my servings of veggies in. I need a great calorie bang for my buck so i decided to go for a salad. Here is what I always get. It is about 350 calories and it fills me up, I do drink just water (it's free!).
Turkey and Ham Salad (both lettuce and spinach)
Pepper Jack Cheese
Olives
Tomato
Banana Peppers
Green Bell Pepper
Cucumbers
Salt and Pepper
Fat Free Honey Mustard0 -
oven roasted chicken on wheat bread 6 inch lettuce tomato onion etc is 320 calories. its 40 calories if you add 2 cheese wedges. mustard has 0 calories so play it safe with vinegar and oil and a dash of pepper0

Subway is fine. You can build your own options and there are so many veggies that you can pile on. Just don't go for the deal with the chips, pop, etc. So tempting. Lunch with friends is fun and you can make it a game to see who can build the healthiest option.0
