They put a chemical in it that makes you crave it fortnightly. No wait, that's KFC.
    Great reference!

    Hiya!
  • and they wonder why we have the highest obesity rate!

McDonalds is not at fault for our obesity rate,we are.

That's true, but food with extremely large amounts of sugar, saturated fat, and trans fat are literally addictive substances. Your body craves them like it would caffeine (which is in their giant troughs of soda) or nicotine, once they've been introduced into your system. Also, they still spend millions each year marketing to children- as a result, most people you ask who go to McDonald's on a regular basis, they can't even remember when they started going. It's such a deeply ingrained habit, a part of their lives since infancy, that they no longer question it. Some people even feel nostalgic about Ronald McDonald and want to pass the "tradition" on to their kids. McDonald's is not blameless in all this.

Exactly. They wouldn't build them if people didn't buy Big Macs.

I thought there were more Subways now? Mmmmmm HFCS bread.

ETA: My kid would never ask to go to McDonalds, their marketing towards kids is only as successful as their parents will allow.
  • Wow...kind of scary that there are so many of them. Not surprised though.
Perhaps I'm missing why this is so scary. It's a company providing a product that folks want. They aren't lying about what they offer. It's easy enough to get the nutrition facts --they even provide them on-site, if you like. Nobody is being forced to eat there. Most folks know it isn't the healthiest option, but they choose to eat it anyway -- some more than others.

    This.

I'd like to see a heat map of the membership of mfp. How about a weighted map of all of us? As we lose weight, the colors on the map change. Or maybe the center of gravity changes. We could do a length-line showing the sum of all our walks and jogs. See how long it takes us to collectively traverse the galaxy.

I swear, I am not making this up. They tore down a McD's not far from me because it was old, in need of serious repair & was ugly. It just needed to go. In it's place? Yep, you guessed it. A brand new McDonalds.
This happened where I live too however they kept the drive through open while they remodeled. The good thing about all the Mcdonald's - a clean (usually) restroom while traveling LOL! I will get coffee there if I need one too.

How dare someone respond to market demand! Who do they thing they are providing jobs to unskilled workers, and reasonable priced food to those on the run? We should occupy the assh0les.

Restaurants remodel all the time. A White Castle near me just got rebuilt and the BK I work at was just remodelled as well.

Something actually surprising is that a Mcdonald's near me actually closed down. For good. It's a deli now.

That allegation was thrown out of federal court in '03.

You know what? I didn't eat McD's growing up ... never even really started going there until after I was fat, and had decided to get fit. And well, I'm down another 8/10 of a pound today, so they're definitely not making me fat.

And people wonder why obesity is an epidemic in the US . . .
Yes -- McDonalds uses mind control to force folks to eat their fatty, salty -- and ever so tasty food.

    Wanna go there for lunch?

    jealous b!tch.

The fries no longer contain beef flavoring (the company discontinued the practice in 2001 in response to a lawsuit). No wonder they aren't as good as they used to be. :)

We have the highest obesity rate because we overeat. If you ate McDonald's every single frikkin day, you could say that, but very few families who are obese do that. They got obese from eating huge calorie meals at home, eating out, and eating too much.
And apparently there are SO MANY people on this site that say it's GROSS and would never eat there, yet somehow they are overweight/obese. Go figure.

I agree with this. I eat there, not often and I try to make sure my meals are limited. Supply and Demand though. We have a lot, because we demand a lot.

I no understand. Is sh|tty food not everywhere? Just look at how many Chipotle's are in existence.

*puffs out chest* Yeah, I said it: Chipotle is akin to the Tex-Mex you can get holding a tortilla under a dog with diarrhea.

Yeah, this is probably true. I don't eat at McD's often, but when I do, I try to be careful. Unsweetened tea or diet drink, grilled chicken sandwich, etc. If I must have a burger & fries, I'll get the Happy Meal. And sometimes, I splurge and get a shake or apple pie. They aren't evil, in my opinion. YOU choose what goes into your mouth folks.

Thank you. McDonald's is a great American success story, in my book. I never eat there (haven't in probably 10 years or more), but they found a product/service that people were willing to pay for, and they created a successful business model in which to distribute/provide it. They aren't doing anything illegal, and they employ hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. People need to stop blaming a restaurant for their own laziness and lack of self-control.

Even if it were true that sugar is like nicotine, McDonald's does not have a monopoly on sugar. Should we blame every sugar cane farmer in the world because some people can't keep their paws off the Twinkies?
