Nickelback - love or hate them?

Just curious what people think? They're scheduled to play the halftime show at the Detroit Lions (vs Green Bay) Thanksgiving Day game, and there's a this huge uproar. People have gone so far as to start a petition saying "we don't want them here",

I agree that it would have been way cooler to have a local artist do it instead, and Nickelback really isn't my cup of tea, but I can certainly think of plenty of acts that are worse in my opinion!

Any insight on why band is SO hated by so many people?

    They are just plain horrible.. the music is so cheesy.

    Oh, I completely agree about the cheesiness ...but just think there are worse bands out there. I've never heard of anyone starting an actual petition to get someone not to play...its funny how they've inspired such a strong hatred!

    Horrible, as a Music Photojournalist I have passed numerous times on covering them. They had maybe one original type song and now you can immediately tell who is playing before they get a minute into the song. Not due to recognizable vocals or tight playing, because they play for the most part the same combination of notes over and over again and lace it sometimes with mid-way decent lyrics with a point. But then as most bands sell out and start singing about daddy catching his little girl screwing the world and how they would rather not listen to their gal talk because they like the world so much with 'them" in her mouth. It's just ludicrous. Mostly they are only famous because their manager is a weasel, and most people are force fed this incessant crap 'pop/radio friendly" stuff we are forced to call music. It saddens me when the only bands people know are the Top 40 hits and such. It's really important people search out good music, not what two huge corporations are telling you is music.

    I like them. Not well enough to buy their music but I like some of their songs. Yes, their lyrics are cheesy but......ummmm......I like country music and I grew up in the 80's and early 90's so cheese is all I know. :laugh:

    its the cool thing to say you hate them.. but i think most people actually do like them. I am not afraid to admit I like them.

    I seriously cannot stand their music. Not that I've sat down and listened to their albums, but whenever they have a new single I hear it on the radio and think, "What IS this garbage??" and then I find out it's them.

    It seems to be more than just the fact that people hate their music, though. Maybe people dislike the band members; I have heard the lead singer is a tool, but I don't know if that's true. Even so, surely lots of popular musicians are not very nice people. I remember there being a facebook page called "can this pickle get more fans than Nickelback?" It seems like it's just become a popular thing to say you hate them.

    But, they are successful, so a lot of people like them. I'm not going to judge, because I like some pretty crap music to be honest.

    theres about 8 of their songs that i absolutely love. the rest are complete rubbish. there is no in between for that group. it's love or hate. and it has nothing to do with the music - the music is awful. the lyrics make or break the song for me when it comes to bands like NB that have no special sound.

    personally I love them! I know some of the songs are cheesy but sometimes cheesy is just plain fun!

    When they first hit (Silver Side Up), I liked them, but really grew to despise them the further they went....There's a few good songs here and there but lately it just goes from bad to worse

    :bigsmile: Yes Ben, I do! That's what got me thinking to post this topic. Its definitely love or hate (no in between) for these guys.

    I'm definitely not a fan of theirs, but I guess I don't care enough to think a petition was necessary.

    There do seem to be a lot of other cheesy bands these days that sound like them now too...

    I feel the same way. Nickelback is the worst band on the planet. And some people think we hate them to sound cool? LOLOLOLOL, no, they just suck. I wouldn't care if saying it got me arrested, I'd still say it.
