Do people actually wear spanx?

I just found out one of my slimmer friends wears "spanx" under her clothes all day EVERYDAY. I was just wondering, does anyone else do this? If so, why (beyond the obvious reason of tucking all the extra bits in)?

I wear spanx to make my clothes look more flattering. It just makes my clothes appear neater.0

I wore spanx before I lost the weight and they weren't very comfortable - I can't imagine having to wear them all day, everyday.0

you know I never did before and I had a pair I purchased 6 months ago to go under a dress in case I needed them...well that was 40 pounds ago and I do wear them now when I workout. They really really help with my back pain. Its pretty much gone now when I workout. I have three herniated disks in my lower spine and they have been so awesome. I have zero back pain when I workout now.0

they're not very comfortable at all, but they do help make your clothes fall more nicely. especially if you've lost a lot of weight and have some extra skin, it keeps it secure so you can really see the weight loss instead of the flappy skin0

I wear Spanx, but only under dresses for nights out/big occasions e.g. weddings etc.
I'm now a size 6-8, but I also wore when I was a size 6, just to make clothes more streamlined and sexy!
Never everyday though, too uncomfortable!0 -
I wear them under some of my dress clothes to make them look neater especially my pants, skirts or sweaters. Rarely do I wear them under my scrubs for work. When I am casual, it depends on what I wear.

I tried buying the VS brand... I found they made me look more like a burrito than anything else! They didn't help me one bit. So I'll let my looser areas hang through freely... LOL0

But everyday!? No way, that would be so uncomfortable to me. But hey, some people don't like certain kinds of underwear, some people hate socks, etc. So I guess it must not bother her! Though I can't imagine. LOL0 -
honestly, I LIKE the compression. even when I didn't wear Spanx, in the winter I always wore tights, camisoles, or long-johns. (I did live in Chicago, however.) Now I live in a much warmer place and wear nothing under my clothes, other than bra and undies!0

This is me also...0 -
I wear Spanx (or generic Spanx) for special occasions and to work out. They help keep my wobbly bits from flapping so hard they hurt when I'm moving around.0

I wear a spanx camisole under most of my shirts/sweaters. It is very comfortable and it makes my clothes fit better.0

Ha ha I always learn something new on MFP!! Never heard of spanx- had to google it. Way too hot where I live (Managua) to wear those- but I'll file it in my memory for some special occasion trip to a cool climate.
Thanks!0 -

Yea, same here. And even then, only under tight dresses. I can't imagine wearing those things all day. I prefer to be able to breathe lol.0 -
They do wonders for dresses! My sister wears hers much more often after she had her baby, but I only wear them with dresses. I think they also help with your legs rubbing together, especially if you're walking around a lot.
When I went to Europe in May, I wanted to look cute, but I also didn't want to have rubbing legs, so I wore spanx under all my dresses. I didn't feel a thing even when walking around 12ish hours a day. And they aren't that uncomfortable once you're used to it.
I sing the praises of spanx to everybody! haha0 -
I never thought about wearing them to work out! Intuitively, it seems like they'd make it harder to work out (can you imagine try to do curl ups in those?! lol) , but your explanations totally make sense!
I'm thinking about getting some but sounds like I'll need to try them on for comfort first! :P0 -
I think they are the most uncomfortable thing in the world. Can't be good for circulation to wear them everyday.
I focus on buying clothes where the cut is flattering to my figure, and try not to squeeze into something that looks good on someone with a different body type/shape.
If I need a little slenderizing help, I just wear control top pantyhose. If that doesn't do the trick, then that outfit is just not right for me.0 -
YES...I wear them almost daily and always during workouts....as I see it, they do a couple things besides the obvious smoothing you out and really making you look a good 10 pounds thinner which in itself is a win. They remind you to have good posture, also I find that it also helps with eating smaller portions (an unintended consequence)....but I began wearing them as an experiment...not a really well thought out experiment mind you with a test group and a control group. But I did have a hypothesis based on anecdotal evidence and that was that it flattens out your stomach by holding it in. I will tell you I have had great results thus far, however what actually caused the inches lost in the tummy I can not positively tell you it was the spanx, the better posture, my workout plan or a combination of all three. But I do feel better in them as they make my stomach look much flatter and smoothes out my back fat as well. I wear the heavy control high waist ones. I highly recommend them.0

Compression is actually good for circulation when used properly. Also, when you FEEL GOOD (emotionally) then they can be good for you!0 -
They would be uncomfortable if they are too small. It is important to get the right size. They aren't intended to be a girdle. They should feel like a hug, not an ace bandage.0

one more thing. Spanx makes a very comfortable bra. Completely smooth, no lines. They even have underwire bras now. The other nice thing about Spanx is that it does stretch out, but goes right back to the original shape when you wash them.0

No more panty lines. I read the story of the inventor/owner of the company. She invented them to eliminate panty lines, not as a girdle type garment.
Anything is uncomfortable if you buy the wrong size.0 -
i only wear them when i want to look extra sucked in , like chiristmas partys or other occasions in dresses, tight fitting skirts. otherwise i couldnt imagine every day wearing them0

I decided to try on some generic spanx in a department store. I usually wear a medium to large so I tried on a large. Well, wrong choice. I got stuck trying to get into the thing. 20 to 30 minutes later I finally got out of the thing. I will never, ever try one on again. : D0

That might be the diff between folks who love 'em and folks who hate 'em. Maybe it's a size/fit issue.
BTW - thongs also get rid of panty lines... just sayin'.0 -

this sounds just like me. I renamed mine zippy pants.0 -
Oh yeah, I just wear the shorts kind too. I guess some of the other ones would be more restrictive / uncomfortable.0
-
I wore one a long time ago underneath a mermaid formal dress- never again!!! It did smooth everything but it was NOT worth it.0

In cheerleading, we wear spankies underneath our skirts. They match our uniform and it prevents people from seeing our underwear. :P I think the only difference is that spankies are more like shorts. Some teams wear spanx though, I think. To make the cheerleaders look slimmer.0

Love love love them, when I'm going out and want a smooth look in a dress or top or the dreaded chub rub resistance I wear them. Not daily but special occasions I love it especially helps with my spare tire symdrome lol0
