How do you get rid of HRM strap mildew smell?

I followed the instructions on the polar website and rinse my HRM strap after each workout and wash it in the washing machine after a every couple of workouts. I've noticed that since it has to air dry it now has a lingering mildew smell that just won't go away. Have any of you had this issue and figured out how to get rid of it? I know putting it in the dryer or sunlight would probably work but I don't think you're supposed to do that so wondering if there is any hope of getting rid of this smell.

I tried a google search and found one blog where this guy says he had the same problem and soaked the strap overnight in water and baking soda. Has anyone tried this? I don't want to ruin the thing.

Good question. I've noticed that too.

I put mine in the dishwasher top shelf with the heat dry. I figure, if it works to keep the kitchen sponge smelling good, it'll work for my HRM strap. It does. Mine's never had odor.

Yes! Washing it with either baking soda or vinegar takes out mildew smell. Believe it or not, the vinegar is the best and you'd think it would make it smell bad (like vinegar) but it doesn't.

Try it. You'll see. I use it on my darks if they ever stay in the washing machine too long. lol

I wash it immediately after working out each day to prevent it from getting a mildew smell.
