"Annonymous" just burned 610 calories doing 20 minutes of "Elliptical Trainer" ...
Is this possible for an average 'overweight' person? What would your comment be?
I'm known to be a little too outspoken, and don't want to offend someone by stating... "That sounds too high for that exercise and length of time."
However, I'm one that will eat every single exercise calorie and know that if my calorie estimation is off, I won't see the results i'm hoping for.
PS. I know that if someone has a lot to lose the burn is much higher, but this doesn't seem to be the case. :flowerforyou:

I'm 179lbs at 5'7" and I do the elliptical for 45 min where my back is soaked through a bit from sweat (eww i know) but even then the machine & MFP say it's 550-560ish0
-
It depends on the size of the person doing the exercise. Someone who has more weight to lose will burn more in a shorter period of time than someone who has less weight to lose.0
-
I used to set the machine to 100% and crank the weight setting up to about 280 lbs and I would burn about 1400 calories in 60 minutes. I didn't weigh 280 at the time but I wasn't that far under it, so I was probably burning 1200 calories in 60 minutes.0

Yes, I know and mentioned it in the post.0 -

5-10 cals per minute is what is typically burned for cardio. The high end is usually reached by those with a high endurance capacity.0
-
I assume it has to do with your weight etc. I see numbers lots higher than mine in the newsfeed but I always assumed it had to do with weight, speed, incline, and other factors. No way I would burn 600 cals in 20 mins on the elliptical - I wish!!0
-
Sounds high to me. But if you look at my exercise calories, they too look pretty high. There is a debate going on about how accurate MFP exercise calculator is - most have concluded MFP is off. So, if the person isn't calculating by a HRM, it's hard to know!0

lol. No reason to apologize. :flowerforyou:
This person wants to lost less than 20 lbs.0 -
just as long as i don't see people entering calories burned with cleaning or food preperation, i don't care how much they burn.0

I'm 5'4 at 145 lbs. and I've been getting on the elliptical for a few years now. With my HRM, I always burn 570 in 60 minutes including cool down. Like you, I'm soaked.
I log 500 calories and eat the heck out of them... :laugh:0 -

But when I'm doin laundry I have to run up and down those damn stairs like 100 TIMES!!0 -
I'm a 5'3" woman and when I weighed about 170 pounds I would burn nearly 1000 calores in a 60 minute step class per my hrm.0

lol this really grinds your gears, eh?
I think MFP calculator is way off in many cases. I try to log only using my HRM...I've entered in most of the exercises I do with the HRM numbers.
That being said...I don't really care how many calories someoen else thinks they're burning...unless they post a "what am I doing wrong?!" thread after a few weeks...0 -

I don't care too much either. :flowerforyou:
I think it's like seeing someone on a machine, doing it incorrectly, and everyone walking by and not helping them out. I would want someone to help me out.0 -
I'd say that's definitely too much for 20 minutes - maybe they mistyped the time or the calories? I've got a little more than 20 pounds to lose and I might get 10 calories/minute on the elliptical if I'm really pushing it.
ETA: I get the complaint about logging cleaning calories (I would only do that for huge projects like vigorous window cleaning) but I know there are some folks on here with disabilities or other restrictions and if that's all they can get for exercise and they're still losing weight, more power to 'em.0 -

Well...some people like you would accept advice, whereas others believe they are doing it correctly and heaven forbid you try to show them the correct way...so most people will shy away from telling them unless what they are doing is dangerous...0 -

If they aren't asking for your advice, don't comment. Frankly it would piss me off for someone to ask that about my calorie burns unless I was asking for feedback. That being said, yes it seems high for someone only needing to lose about 20 lbs as you said. I myself could easily burn 400 calories in a 20 minutes Turbo jam session.0 -
I know when I first signed up on MFP and would see these amazing calorie burns posted by obese people and I was like WTF!??! I don't burn that much when I'm on the Elliptical for 45 minutes. I learned later that obese people do burn a lot more calories performing a task that someone of average weight would. That being said I did eventually delete a couple of friends who were constantly posting exercise calories burned between 1000 - 2000 calories a day and NEVER lost a pound. I figured eventually if you were truly burning that many cals you would start to see results.0

That always gets me too, I did that stuff before and I didn't lose any weight, I just assume that's part of my regular days. It's not like I JUST started cleaning my house when I decided to change my lifestyle.0 -
I'd have raised my brows as well, then checked to see if this person was reaching goals or not.
If so, you leave it alone, because what they do works, but if not, then BINGO!
We now know why, and yes, I'd say something.
BTW...
If any friend wants to get deleted from my news feed, enter something like "...burned 50 calories taking out the trash or ironing clothes..." -- lol0 -
I burned 558 in 35 minutes on the elliptical and today was a "low intensity" day for me. I use my HRM and know mine is accurate, but MFP says I burn a LOT less than that.0
-
I'm 5'3", 170lbs and burn 285cals in 30 mins.0

Fat people are notoriously dishonest about calories consumed and calories burned.
Are you f*cking kidding me with this??? You do know you are on a site that has many overweight people trying to lose weight and you would say something so offensive?0 -
I know that I log 600 calories for my 30 minute elliptical workout. That is what my eliptical tells me that I burn...so I just go with it. I know it probably isn't correct, but I still log it that way. I assume that person is doing the same thing. I don't usually eat back the calories burned, so it probably doesn't matter anyway. I say good for them to do the elliptical, regardless if they are "off" on the calories that they burned....0
-
I think I see what you're saying. I would just say, each person's results more or less speak for themselves. Sometimes I look at a friends' food diary and think, "Ack! I would weigh 300 pounds if I ate like that." But then I see that they've lost like 60 plus pounds, so I figure I'll let them do their thing and I'll do mine and once in a while, if someone asks for advice, I might step in with a suggestion or too. It's good to be concerned about our friends, but also good to give a lot of grace, as we are all just humans.0

what's wrong with logging calories for cleaning? if i spend 2+ hours cleaning my house (not something i do every day) or 20 minutes running a push broom and rolling matts after dog class, chances are i'm gonna log that (20 min exercise for me, 5 paw points towards the next dog class, and 20 min that my dog did a down stay and didn't break her stay, +++ all around).0 -

seems high to me as well... but it depends on the level the machine was set at.0

I would say something like, "wow, I only burn 300 calories when I do that. Tell me how to burn that many!"0
