I have been working for a big fortune 100 company as an Actuary for four years now. I hate the job. It makes me feel miserable 40 hours a week.
I know if I stay longer at this job , I will have a stroke or become very stressed and depressed.
Some of you might wonder why , I just don't go somewhere else. Well, I am working in the US with a worker's visa. Transferring to another company is not impossible but it is a very complicated process. I might eventually be able to leave but I am not sure when.
I run into different kind of people everyday who hate their job as well.
If you have the opportunity to leave , do so. It's not worth it to stay at a job you hate.
We spend tremenduous amount of time at work , I think one will live longer if you enjoy what u do.

That's all.

My coworker was stuck in that situation for a couple years but he just finally got his green card a few months ago so now he can leave - I think the very knowledge of freedom is helping him a lot!

I happen to enjoy my job, but would quit doing it if I were to come into a chunk of money. I should be able to retire by age 50 (5 years), so I guess it is worth it. I agree with your thought, don't do it if you hate it. That goes for just about everything in life (work, food, relationships, etc.). Life is too precious to waste on things that don't bring you joy.

I always thought being an actuary would be kinda cool. Guess not for some. Sorry to hear you are stuck there.

I'm pretty content with my random school bookstore job when my back doesn't complain but am ready to get serious and professional when I graduate. :) Hoping to pick up a couple internships here and there. In accounting if you are wondering.

I have been in a job I absolutely loathed. Any call center job has that effect on me. Never again! Hence why I'm in school.

It's a very cool job if you like math and you're in the right environment. I just happen to b stuck in the wrong place.

I absolutely HATE my job, but I love the fact that I get paid to do almost nothing for 40 hours a week except answer phone calls from his wife and girlfriend! I work for a "semi-retired" 64 yr old attorney who spends most of his office time (and evening) with his 29 yr old herion user prostitute girlfriend (not being mean, she's self proclaimed user and prostitute) girlfriend who lives right next door to his office in one of his apartments. Let's just say, it's not boring..........

Accounting sucks, I have been doing it for 11 years now, working in Big 4 and industry, ugh, I wish I had learned a technical trade. The offsets are job stability and decent money but it's definitely stressful and not fulfilling.

    OK, so GET ANOTHER JOB!

Come on folks; just siting around sniveling about a problem does nothing.
If you are unhappy in your current position, get out!
Make a transition plan today that will reasonably move you into something you are more suited for.

A good vocation must engage your passions as well as your skills. And can the difference in what you may lack be made up through training, additional education or experience? Don't just curse the darkness; do something about it.

    Do that TODAY!
    Take action TODAY!

Again, moaning and crying does nothing, and misery may love company, but your misery in your job is optional.
Success and happiness is a choice.

    Make the right choice today.

A year ago, I had a job that caused me to have panic attacks constantly. The ambulance was there for people at least once a week who had never had one and thought they were having heart attacks. When I had a total nervous breakdown this summer, I was DONE. Found a new job with a health supplement company that is rewarding, and I am now off all my depression and anti-anxiety meds. It is s supportive environment and a wonderful place to be. I agree...if you are miserable, leave.

I've worked in some bad environments and I can totally understand.

I have up and down days at my job. I am not paid enough for my background and experience but that's another story.

In any case, if you have to remain there, try doing something different. It might sound silly, but try taking a different route to your office in the morning, or try a new flavor of coffee, or taking a break at a different time and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Is there a chance to meet new people in your company, or outside of work in some type of actuarial professional group, try to join that. Maybe if you focus on other activities, work won't feel so terrible.

I read somewhere that having fun in a social environment has a positive effect for 3 or 4 days, so if you do things you enjoy outside of work, it can lift your mood.

One final note, are you on LinkedIn? If not, join, or if you are, try connecting with people that way, professionally. Make connections now and think about what type of environment you would like to work in, then start meeting and talking to people. Once you put it out there, it paves the way once you are free to leave the company.

I have been at my job almost 9 years with abosolutely no chance of advancing...there just isn't anything available to me since I'm the only employee in my state and in order to advance I'd have to relocate...not gonna happen. I can't quit because I work mostly from home and can keep my kids out of daycare but it brings me no joy, I barely have to think....it just sucks. So until my youngest is in school (another 5 yrs!!!) I'm stuck. YAY for a paycheck though that keeps food on my table, roof over my head and me home to watch my baby do all of his firsts.

I hate my job too. I have to travel once a month and be away from my kids for the entire week. Drive 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get there and home when I do go regardless of the weather. If my boss sets a date I have to show up, he also schedules meetings, lunches and dinners with out my knowledge so when I arrive everything is a big surprise. Especially since he forgets he agreed to them often telling me and hour before a meeting. My job description changes constantly as well. I started 3 1/2 years ago with a very defined title and responsibilities were clearly defined as well. Now whenever something is not handled properly or needs attention it is given to me. There is also no salary increase for constantly being given new responsibilities. I feel like I am running in 100 directions every day trying to give so many things my attention. I am chiefly in charge of fund raising for a nonprofit religious org. that directly depends on the funds I can bring in to continue or the residence will close. Knowing religious elderly can be sent out of their current care facility and sent to a nursing home instead stresses me the heck out. Especially as I have grown to know all the residents and leaving here would send them into a severe depression, with the health problems here the depression or stress of it actually could kill a few of them. I feel like I am drowning most days. Oh and the emails, phone calls and texts come in 24/7 with my boss expecting a prompt response.

I'm a stay at home mom. While it is nice to have time to workout while the kids are in school, I hate my job. I desperately want to be working at a "real" job again. Being home all day is very isolating.

I've tried working PT during the day, but with my daughter's medical problems I have to be able to drop everything and go pick her up if she has a seizure at school or has a doctor's appointment, .

Do you like being an actuary at all? Or is it the company? I only ask because I love math, and thought about taking the exam at some point.
  • I understand totally. I was at a job that I knew was being downsized but the exit package was to good to leave early. I hated going to work every day and especially having to put the smile on for our customers. When that job ended I decided I would only take a job that I felt was the prefect fit. It took a year and 4 months but I now have one of the most interesting and challenging jobs ever.
I am one of the lucky ones that now work for a small company with owners who appeciate your input and reward you generously.
I will never stay at a job again that makes me miserable just to have a job.

Up until April of last year I dispised my job, and would find every way in the book to get out of going to work. In April I got laid off, started handing out resumes and got a job... doing exactly the same thing as I was doing at my previous job. at first I was very concerned that I would start to hate my job again because it was pretty much exactly the same job as before, you know what I found? I actually love my job, and what I do, I just hated the company I worked for.

Perhaps some of the hatred toward your job isn't so much hating what you are doing but where you are doing it.

You say you're an actuary at a fortune 100 company? I just might be unmarried and willing to help you with citizenship for a nominal fee...lol
