Is pasta really that bad??

I've been eating cold whole wheat pasta for lunch with lettuce. I was wondering if I would be better off weight loss wise if I didn't eat pasta but an alternative. I cannot eat just salad though as I find it boring so end up wanting more.

If it fits eat it. I love pasta in the beginning I ate lots and lots of it. I've lost quite a bit of weight so I wouldn't think it really is that bad.0 -
I try to not eat more than 60g of pasta and only for lunch because of the carb. When I started my diet I stopped eating carbs for dinner and I think it helped a lot with losing weight (I'm down 20kg)0

I love pasta, whole wheat is great. Remember moderation and that your on a journey to a new lifestyle and healthier you. I wouldn't eat it every day though.0

Pasta is LOADED with carbs!!! I usually eat it before a very long run (over 11 miles) because its got a lot of stored up energy and your body does not have to work too hard to break it down into raw energy.

There is nothing wrong with eating pasta, just try to stick to portion sizes. Have you tried any of the whole wheat variety??0

I disagree. Different people process carbs in different ways. Some are more carb sensitive than others. I can easily eat pasta, bread, and whatever else is carb laden in moderation and have lost weight (and kept it off) just fine.0 -
I have it twice a week on average. Big bowls, I just gotta have it.
So on those days I make sure to burn some cals. That's really all you need to do. There is no such thing as a "bad" food. Just find a way to fit it into your plan.

As an alternative to always having whole wheat noodles, I find brown rice noodles to be super tasty and good for you. I agree that its all in moderation. Its so easy to over eat any kind of pasta. If you look for the serving size on the back of the box its usually like a 1/2 cup. I can probably eat like 3 cups cooked. So I make sure I just cook one serving at a time to avoid over eating0

What I mean is - I would not eat it OFTEN due to the high calorie, high carb content of it. Punch in "Pasta" into MFP. A bowl of it is around 800 calories. Not something you should eat too much of if your looking to lose weight. I also know people who can down ice cream, eat chips/queso and Mexican food, hamburgers, and a ton of other things and still remain thin. A majority of people are not like that.0 -

umm one serving of pasta is 190-210 calories. Load it up with lean protein and lots of veggies and you can have a low calorie dish.0 -

If it fits in with your calories and macros then there is no reason to not eat it. Just watch your portions.

How does it make you feel when you eat it? Full of energy and ready to workout, or sleepy and lethargic? Aside from putting my calories into MFP, I tend to use that as my yardstick for what foods to eat. Pasta gives me energy, so do cheeseburgers. Hot dogs, even Hebrew National (guaranteed not to be mystery meat) don't give me much energy, so I'm trying to avoid eating those. Eggs are kind of an in between for me. I think it will vary by person, so pay attention to how what you eat makes you feel.

They key to weight loss is calories. Just watch your calories. However, all calories are not created equal. Protein rich calories take longer to burn and fill you up longer. Carb rich calories raise blood sugar which also causes more cravings and do not burn as fast. If you are very hungry, try a protein rich lunch tomorrow with some cheese and you will see that you will not be as hungry either. Pasta is great, don't worry, it's just a matter of how many calories you take in. I LOVE pasta but I try to limit it because I know that it doesn't make me as full. Good luck!:flowerforyou: Christa0

If you did want some alternatives; gnocchi is great but is not very low on carbs. Couscous is the thing I love to eat instead of pasta0

mmm eating pasta right now. A serving of this stuff is about three bites, though, not a bowl like the one sitting next to me, so like it or not, I'm going to have to finally get out of my chair and go for a walk today or something!0 -
i avoid Pasta like the plague. I'll eat bread and potatoes for my carbs, avoid pasta and rice. Why? The tendency to overeat them is massive, I find the portion size of pasta and rice is really difficult.0

a serving of the wheat pasta is 200 calories, put the fresh garlic and olive oil and it's about 300.....Definitely eat pasta, it's a healthy food and the carbs are 41..... Pasta gets a bad rap, and it shouldn't.0 -

I weigh it out before I cook it and have 70-100g depending on how I feel. As much as I want I don't see myself staying away from carbs and eat them at all 3 meals a day. Mainly because it's what my mum cooks but also because they are filling. I don't want to become a problem by eating different to others in my house so I just weigh all my foods and avoid takeouts, chocolate, crisps(or chips) and sweets. I have lost 9 lbs in just over a week but am over 200lbs. I'm going to the gym as well as doing PE and extra curriculum activities so hope having a 1,500 calorie day with this will help weightloss and I will try to cut having pasta to 2/3 times a week. If you think it is small try angel hair pasta it makes a bigger looking serving and lasts a bit longer when you eat it :]0 -
I find pasta by itself not particularly filling for the amount of calories it has, but when I have it I add vegetables and herbs and spices so it's more flavoured veges with pasta garnish.0

No. I have pasta pretty much every day in some form and I always have - it's white pasta too! *gasp!* I can't get enough of the stuff.
I've lost weight, I've gained weight, and have to say it really is just calories in vs calories out. Everything in moderation
The difference between me before MFP, and after MFP is that when I was still living at home a few years ago I used to have 200g (7oz) of "dry weight" pasta for my main meal. A serving size is 75g approx.
The reason why I used to weigh it was not because I cared about calories but more because I wanted as much as I could fit on the plate (large steak plate) without it overflowing, and I knew exactly how much that was and I wasn't having any less!
Now I have the regular serving size. I can go up to 100g sometimes for things like macaroni cheese which seem like nothing on a regular serving (I love that stuff!) but never more than that. I actually get full now! haha0 -

This sounds really similar to me, I have a seven year old and I don't want her to grow up thinking certain foods are bad and she can't have them, just that they have to be eaten in moderation. We're practicing eating more of the healthier foods together rather than me dieting and cutting out everything tasty0
