I was washing my hands at the kitchen sink Sunday and started smelling bleach strong enough to make a point about it and say something out loud. So I smelled my hands thinking maybe it was the water, nothing... I filled a glass of water and smelled it, nothing.... then I was walking through CVS Monday morning and smelled it again! Monday night I was on the phone and smelled a strong scent of buttered popcorn. Again, it was strong enough to make me say thing. I asked my hubby if he was making popcorn and he said, "you know I don't eat popcorn". Wierd. Now, I haven't had any other 'symptom' per-say. If I was psyching myself out, wouldn't I pick something like chocolate or oranges (something normal) and not bleach and buttered popcorn???

I guess I should add that I have not used bleach in about a week and a half and haven't had popcorn in about 2 or 3 years...?? What do you think? Am I (WAKO!? )

I know the feeling. For about 4 months I kept smelling smoke. Like someone was smoking a pipe or cigar. I googled and it revealed some interesting possible reasons.
This happened a few years ago.

I do this at night. It's either coffee or cig smoke that I smell. Then there are the sounds I hear, but thats for a whole different thread.

The first two things that come to mind for me are pregnancy & brain tumors, but I wouldn't rule out ghosts either!
  • You might be! That's a symptom I always have in very early pregnancy.

    Could be sinus infection
    Pregnancy
    Stroke
    Or just whatever

Have you been pleghmy ? Then its probably not a sinus infection

I had the above really bad when I started this lifestyle change... Smelling sea water constantly, then I realized I had a nasty sinus infection...

I don't think smelling random things that aren't there is a symptom of pregnancy. During each of my three pregnancies I definitely had a stronger sense of smell but I only smelled things that were really there.

ETA: Now all I smell is spit up and poop.

I have those weird smells too. It could be sinus problems. When you have sinus problems or when they clear up sometimes scents seem to be stronger and seem strange. I have nasal polyps and when I have been on steroids to clear them I smell all sorts of weird smells because my sense of smell is so strong. Another possibility could be if you have a water softner and its recycling you could be smelling the salt from that. In CVS maybe they were cleaning. Who is to say.

Definitely ghost or brain tumor. Don't jump to conclusions like pregnancy until you're late!

Often times I will be sitting in our living room and swear that I can smell smoke. My husband looks at me like I am a crazy woman.
We live in him parents old house. I always say, "Your mom and dad are with us right now. i can smell their smoke." I truly believe
they are floating around the room on me.

What else smells like bleach? Let's brainstorm, guys!

Could someone be tossing something that smells like bleach on you, without you noticing?

I think it is this. LOL. Sometimes differents smells can mix and create a completely different smell.

I would just see a doctor. The first thing I thought was stroke because it causes phantom smells. Better be safe and at least call your doc.

It could be a chemical imbalance in your brain.
Or there may be something in your diet you are lacking that is in bleach and popcorn.
The body does weird things, when I was pregnant I remember hearing about other pregnant woman craving chalk, dirt, cigarette buds because they were lacking something in their diet that their body knew those other things had.

I do not think you are pregnant because you are smelling something that is not even there, which pregnancy heightens your sense of smell for things that are all ready there (I honestly did not notice any difference).

wish you luck! Go to your doctor, since you're dieting you could be lacking something.

** I do want to add that your brain is a very powerful tool and often times just thinking of a smell can actually trick your body into actually smelling it. You may have been doing that. Just like a lot of people with panic disorder/anxiety can actually talk themselves into thinking they are having a panic attack at any slight thing such as increase in heart rate. Then they think about it, and then think they are having one when really they're not which in the end causes them to have one. (I know because I have anxiety/panic disorder.)

Yeah, I'd go with either ghost or pregnant. Hopefully the latter, if you're trying! :) Or the former I guess, if you really like ghosts, haha.

Our senses of sight, taste, smell etc. are all dependent upon the nerves delivering the appropriate stimuli to the brain, and that stimuli being properly interpreted. So any time you are hearing, seeing, smelling something that demonstrably is not there, you should take this seriously as it might indicate a problem with your brain. Stroke & other brain injury survivors sometimes report phantom pains, smells, sounds etc. as their brains build new pathways to adapt to their injuries. Personally, I often experience phantom smells or weird lights in my vision a few minutes before a migraine headache hits.

Don't panic, or anything, it could be something simple like a random chemical imbalance. But it could also be something more serious like a mild stroke or a brain tumor. Since it has happened several times now, I'd say, better safe than sorry: get ye to a doctor, and get it checked out.

That's actually called pica (craving and/or smelling things that have no actual nutritional value.) It's usually caused from an extreme lack of iron. :)
