Thanks all, much appreciated, and I'm very reassured by all you gorgeous trendy MFPers of all ages!

Dress-down day tomorrow, I shall do what it says on the packet

You do that Berry. I feel like I've made an effort if I'm not wearing pj's. I have a cardigan I wear on cold work from home days that does up with a bulldog clip. Definitely not something that Vivienne Westwood designed. Panicking too - was I supposed to stop wearing skinny jeans and heels too? Ahhh crap!!!

In other news, It's funky Friday! I'm wearing a top with short ruffled sleeves over a skinny long-sleeve t-shirt, boyfriend jeans that are too big cinched in with a ponyskin belt and my customised Nike ID trainers in black and turquoise with the legend "I love my shoes" embroidered on the tongues

Bugger. Should I throw out my "I should be in the kitchen" t-shirt along with all my band t-shirts? That's over half my wardrobe! I don't think it's so much that I like to dress young more than I've got so used to wearing this stuff and can't be ar*ed to find anything else that suits me - plus working in IT it's not going to be like I'm the only old bird in a slogan t-shirt on dress down days ;-)
You know what Vanessa, I realised it was a complete lie. In at least three of my photos here alone I'm wearing print t-shirts. Even my Simpson's avatar has one! I even have a slogan running vest that reads, "I'm slow. I know. Get over it."

There's a difference between stylish and having your own flare and being completely tacky. Just make sure you know what the boundaries are and you're good. :)

I'm 48 and the things that would look silly on me now would also have looked silly on me at 20... so no change there! I wear whatever I like including slogan Tshirts...

You're never to old to wear what you like. If it looks good (in your opinion), wear it! Whatever you wear, some people will like it, some won't. You can only please yourself. I'm 40 and I dress younger than my years. Who cares? No one whose opinion I give a rats *kitten* about

It's definitely a generational think. When I was growing up, even jeans were considered youth wear and you'd seldom catch someone over 30 in them, and grandparents had a licence for tweed

There's some beautiful tweed out there now. I can't see my Gran in Vivienne Westwood

But you are right, attitudes to getting old have changed. When I was younger I said to myself that I'd stop colouring my hair when I got to 25...Well, that was a long time ago, and I'm still colouring.

You can wear whatever makes you happy and comfortable.

As long as you don't wear the trends you wore in highschool is my rule. That may be because I went to highschool in the 80s.

No way! you're only as old as you act and feel! if you dress different and it isn't who you are then thats just gonna suck and make you feel like crap, thus hindering yourself and aging you faster.

If you have to ask...

But really, I don't think there's an age limit on trendy. It's more of a mindset.

Anyone with a problem about how you look is the one carrying the problem.

At our Y there is Mary - a 70 something grandma who wears skate shoes, a superman T shirt, a nose ring and has a bald head all except for a foot high mohawk. As we passed her for the first time my wife turned to me and said "I want to be that woman when I'm seventy!"

    this!!!

I am wondering the same thing for myself. What made sense to me was when I heard as you age and want to dress "sexy", you do it by wearing body hugging or form fitting clothes (that look attractive on you) as compared to showing cleavage and more leg. I totally believe this and also dying your hair if you want to and getting a modern haircut. You are not trying to be 20 or 30, just attractive. I dont go for purple hair streaks and pierced noses on women over 40 but that's just me!

^^Totally agree. Also, makeup requires a lighter hand as you get older. But, you know: classic styling and well-cut garments are great at any age. I see this with my teens, who look to me for 'fashion advice.' Even my slim 19-year-old son, with a long, lean natural line likes me to advise him how to extend it for a sleek, yet masculine, look. When I am down to a desirable weight, I will buy well-fitted clothes, but no cleavage and leg to make anyone think 'I'm trying too hard.' I want classic, stylish, and sleek.

My daughters are very pleased with the "not knit stretch pants" that I am now able to wear and look good in. My youngest daughter has told me recently to wear more form fitting clothes to show off the fact that I have a figure again and that I have worked so hard for. I am not trying to dress like an 18 year old.....just stylish. I'm wearing boots this winter because my legs are finally thin enough that I can zip them up. I say that 80% of women know what they can wear. There are still some who think that being "older" means you have to dress a certain way and others that think they can wear leggings and a shirt at 60......yuk!

I'm 56 and wear slogan tees. My daughter bought me one for Christmas that says 'Yoda says relax!' on it.

I am your wife and I think you are too old...sort it out and wear nice shirts and tops, stop with the scruffy *kitten* and dress like a man in his 50's, not an OLD man, but a man in his 50's with some style and not man in his 50's who has not changed his wardrobe since the 70's and even then he wasn't fashionable or trendy.

I DO think that some people are too old for some clothes, sorry. i am 45, dress fashionably, but age appropriate and not in the styles that I wore when I was a teenager because that is just SAD and not in the styles my adult daughters wear as they are in their 20's and I would look like a sad old specimen if I dressed like a 20 year old.

    Owned! Sorry :blushing:

I have to admit there's a positive youthful cycle connected with losing weight and getting fit. I was horrified to learn just how many elastic-waisted trousers had accumulated in my wardrobe when I had a clear-out. Now my sweatpants are solely used for transporting me to the gym and back, as nature intended. Nor is getting home, ripping off your tights and unbuttoning/unzipping your trousers or skirt before you've even said hello a good look!

Look, I need to lose weight thats why I am doing this. But when it comes to age, I have found myself working and (meeting) mingling with younger people and have no problem. Its a matter of perception, while I am 41 people in their early 20's think I am only about 30 ish, even with the excess weight. I look at some people only a few years older than me and think, wow, that how my grandfather used to dress (cant say father cos I don't know him), so, its how you feel most comfortable and how you come across to people of all ages. If you are smart and can relate to younger people they will not look at age, straight away anyway........just be who you wannabe, you only get one life and one shot at it, make the most of it! Cheers

Thats aweomse, only because I am too gutless to put pics up of me from the 80's, but the guy on the right, if it is a guy, seems to have the anatomically correct Ken Doll "mound" thing going on.....just saying....

I like cleavage! Not a lot but definitely I like to bring out the ladies when I'm on a date with my husband! However, I think as we get older, our clothes need a little more structure-better bones so to speak. I can't wear those thin shapeless flouncy cotton blouses anymore-they look ridiculous on me. I need clothes with a little construction. :)
