My HM shows that I burned like 1987 calories today. Should I eat all of those back? I was just doing some light cleaning and gardening...it seems crazy that I burned that many but if the Polar says it then it must be right...right?

HELP!

That's a lot of calories for just light cleaning and gardening. I don't think it's right but see what everyone else says.

That doesn't seem right. Check out some other sites to see what they calculate for that kind of activity and compare.

I wear it all day. That is what the forums said I should do. Is this not right?

I know my gardening probably burns close to that, the garden is bigger in square footage than the house is :P

and if the weeding gets ahead of me then it's an all day affair to yank it out if not a couple days depending on which weeds are ahead. Between digging for the transplants weeding, harvesting, wrapping in burlap, covering with straw for the insulation... it's always a workout in the garden and far more productive than any time i've ever spent in the gym

If you plan to wear it all the time and track the calories you would want a bodybugg or whatever they are like on biggest loser instead of just a heart rate monitor.

Subtract out your BMR and it might be close to right.

I wouldn't add that much. I am guessing you were cleaning/gardening for a long time, and your heart rate wasn't in it's target zone the whole time. A HRM is meant for exercising at an elevated heart rate. Not really for light cleaning over a long period of time. :)

Did you do any driving? I've heard some people say it logs their driving as steps.

A heart rate monitor is meant to monitor your heart rate....regardless of what you are doing.
  • wether you burned that many calories or not, the bottom line answer is NO!, do not eat enough to compensate. If you are trying to lose weight, you need to take in at least 1200 calories per day regardless of the amount you burn. The more you burn above your intake the quicker you body will burn up the fat you have stored. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

You're not supposed to wear it all day. Just when you are doing any exercise is when you should wear it. Does the HRM not show a heart rate zone? If you're heart rate is in the "fat burning zone" that is when you should count it as exercise.

Yes, it monitors your heart rate no matter what you're doing, but what I meant is you're not supposed to wear it all day, then count all of those calories as exercise. That would be a little deceiving.

If you've worn it all day then you've picked up your BMR cals as well as exercise cals, and these are already built into your calorie goal. Definitely don't eat them back, and I would recommend only wearing the HRM for exercise to make figuring out your cals simpler.
