How much water do I HAVE to drink to lose weight?

I'm not a big drinker of anything, and to be honest I'm not very fond of water. I know this is terrible, but I have to be honest.

I can typically go through the day and literally maybe drink 3 - 8 oz glasses all day.

This is clearly a problem.


Sooo I'm gonna try and FORCE myself to drink nothing but water and MORE of it! But considering that usually makes me feel like I want to puke, I wanna know how much I absolutely HAVE to have in order to lose weight.

I'm assuming the typical 8-8 oz glasses. Anyone lose weight on less?

  • water has little effect on fat loss. It is good to keep hydrated for workouts.

    Try just getting 8 oz of fluids a day

    I find it hard to drink water too. It is a challenge some days, but so beneficial! I find that it is so filling...not to mention you are cleaning out all the toxins in your body.

    They say to drink half your bodyweight in ounces each day...

    I drink 120-140 oz a day, or right around a gallon. The more overweight you are, the more you are supposed to drink. :)

    No joke, try drinking water out of a cup with a straw. Bahah i swear it's easier that way.

    Are you drinking things besides water? I know some people will argue that only water counts as water, but that is biologically/medically false. Your body will pull water from other beverages you drink and the foods you eat.

    The better way to know if you're adequately hydrated is to check the color of your urine. If it's a light straw-colored yellow to almost clear, your body is already hydrated.

    Water doesn't do anything magical for weight loss. Drinking more water than your body needs isn't going to make the pounds come flying off.

    I've wondered this myself. I think I may try this today! I do like it better with ice...If only I could just sit and chew crushed ice all day and get enough water that way! LoL I'm sure my jaw would be tired, BUT it would probably help with the muchies! haha
  • I dont like drinking water but I have found that if I do it at regular intervals it is easier than trying to down alot at the end of the day

    Maybe you should see a doctor if water makes you sick. Or maybe try some filtered water.

    Try adding a squeeze of lemon, lime, or orange to your water. That helps me!

    water also help your body in lots of ways - like your skin and your organs. - flushes out toxins -

    maybe try slices of orange or a sliver of lemon everyonce in a while - try and get your 8 glasses in - it really does make a difference - and you'll find yourself craving it -

    Not a big water( or anything) drinker. I def. do not get enough fluid in a day. I, as well am forcing myself to drink.

    Try drinking sparkling water that is flavored and no cal. Or had lemons to it. I like lemon in Hot water kinda like a lemon tea, Plus instead of glasses I use a water bottle to keep track of how much I'm drinking. Good luck with your goal!

    I am a huge water drinker, I have to have water with me to do what ever I do, maybe a little ADD about it but it does not make you lose anything, it clears your body, and maybe helps to satisfy hunger pains when you are not really hungry. They make mixes you can use like ice tea that have no calories, and mio. Water also helps with your skin as well so drink up.:wink:
  • I lose more weight by drinking more water. I wasn't a huge fan of drinking water but now, it's all I drink. I go to restaurants and I get water. I go to vending machines and my first choice is water. I keep a bottle of water by my at all times when working. A single bottle of water is about 2 cups and it can go pretty quickly.

    The benefits of drinking water are such:
    -Keeps you hydrated and refreshed.
    -Clears your skin and keeps it moisturized (for me, my skin is smoother when I drink more water).
    -Clears your systems and keeps it healthy.
    -It's said that cold water burns a small amount of calories and warm water increase metabolism (this is the main reason I drink it, true or not).

    Now, I don't feel as hungry, I feel more refreshed, and find myself unable to live without water. It's just something you get used to. :) To know how many ounces you need, take your weight and divide by 2. Mine is about 63oz (8 cups or 4 16oz bottles of water).

    I probably gave you more info than you asked for but it's something that's good to know. It's doesn't make you lose weight and it's not really necessary TO lose weight, it just REALLY helps and it's good for your body.

    You don't need drink a drop of pure water.


    The average person needs the equivalent of 8 cups of water a day on average, from any source. These sources can be pure water/tea/coffee/juice/soda/milk/fruit/veg etc. It does NOT have to be pure neat water!

    As for tea/coffee being a diuretic, so many people just spout that word as a reason, without actually understanding what "diuretic" means.

    Neat water is also a diuretic. The diuretic effect of caffeine is far, far outweighed by the actual water in the tea/coffee. Also, regular consumers of caffeinated beverages will build up a tolerance to said effect, eventually reaching the point where caffeinated drinks provide practically the same amount of hydration as a cup of neat water will.

  • If you have problems drinking water, try drinking it at a warmer temperature. Room temp water is easier to drink than cold water.

    The past few days I've been drinking nothing but water except one small glass of lemonade. I'm typically a soda addict, and the only other thing I like to drink is milk. Haven't been drinking the milk though either.

    drinking water will help weight loss because a lot of people eat more when they are dehydrated, and usually what they are eating is sugar. Also, water helps banish bloat. If you are bloated the number won't go down on the scale as much as it should. Try drinking at least 6 glasses of 8 oz, if you can, drink 8-10 glasses. But 6 oz is definitely the absolute minimum.

    If you can't drink plain water try crystal light, herbal teas and drinks like Trop 50 which are about 50% water anyway. Also, try artisan waters, they usually taste better than tap and poland spring.

    I've had to work up to drinking 8 glasses of water a day, but OK with it now and am drinking a lot less diet coke and decaf coffee. I have noticed that when I drink plenty of water I rarely get hunger pangs and also the condition of my skin has been vastly improved.

    None. Drink what you like - tea, coffee, fruit juice, sodas, soup, fruit juice, watery fruit and vegetables, stews - your body doesn't care where the H2O molecules come from. So long as you're not dehydrated (water is a pale straw colour, but note vitamin B can make it dark yellow) you'll be fine.

    Caffeine is NOT a diuretic, however alcohol is!

    Throw a lemon or cucumbers in it to jazz it up. I found a profound difference between how much energy and hunger I have, and how differently I feel overall depending on how much water I have consumed.

    It's all in the mind. LoL I'm just used to sodas and not even a lot of that, so you mix the two and I feel almost grossed out. I only drink filtered. The only thing I enjoy drinking a lot of is milk, but that's not good. lol

    A couple of my friends have mentioned this too. They say drink a glass every time I've gone to the bathroom, or set a timer to remember. My mom says I've always been this way. ugh.

    I agree! LOL

    When my run instructor told me that information it took a few mins to scrape my jaw off the floor. I think at that time I was drinking half a fat cats body weight in oz per day not my own weight...lol

    I like to float cucumber slices in the water, makes it very refreshing. Esp. in the summer.
  • I don't track or drink 8 cups a day. There's plenty of water in many food you eat. For example, I eat Cream of Wheat just about every morning,,, direction is this,, 3 tbsp of farnia to 3/4 cup water.. There's water in it already after is is prepared and ready to eat!

    I just noticed. Go back to all posts,,, did you notice those who lost alot disproved this 8 cups a day myth? while those who lost a few say drink alot? Trust me,, there's LOT of water in food, even food that grew from ground,, apple has lot,, orange has alot,, anything juicy itself is water.
