Great source of potassium. I usually eat two or three a day.
imo...WAY too many
banannas are fine but they are so over rated
It's a great source of potassium. Just be careful not to intake to much potassium because that can cause hyperkalemia.0 -
I don't go near them. They hit my blood sugar the same way pure sugar does. Bananas are a GMO food so I'm wary. I do love the taste of them, though.
They are way up there on the sugar scale.
Glycemic Index:
Banana - around 52 (underripe would be lower and overripe would be higher); GLYCEMIC LOAD: 14 (medium)
table sugar - between 58-65; GLYCEMIC LOAD: 7 (low)
Remember though, fructose (the main sugar in fruit) goes straight to the liver and is converted to fat (it isn't even used as energy or nutrients or anything). High consumption of fructose can lead to Non-Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease. Of course eating a whole piece of fruit is healthier than consuming HFCS through soda or processed food.
You must also remember that all non-fiber carbs turn to sugar when you ingest them. So you have to count all non-fiber carbs as sugar. Not just sugar (brown rice and white rice both raise my blood sugar pretty high - the brown just takes a little longer to do it).0 -
I have one every morning and sure can't complain.
Except I forgot mine today. That I will complain about.0 -
bananas are awesome!! Especially for a pre-workout meal to give you energy while you work out, since it is a simple carb and can give you instant energy, and also afterwards with a protein shake to restore the glycogen stores in your muscles to give your muscles the energy to perform again the next day.... since it is fast absorbing it can get into the broken down muscle quick right after you workout.. also will help facilitate the absorption of the protein into the muscle if used in conjunction with protein right after a workout :P

Bananas are really good for you, and pretty delicious!
-High in potassium
-Help upset stomach
-High in fiber
Fruit sugars are ok as long as you eat the whole fruit and not just fruit juice. The fiber in the fruit makes it so our bodies take longer to digest the sugars.
As long as you stay away from refined sugars (as lots of people have said) then natural sugar isn't a problem, as long as your not pre-diabetic or at risk for diabetes.0 -

Bananas are not overrated, good try tho. It's a great source of potassium. Just be careful not to intake to much potassium because that can cause hyperkalemia.
You'd have to eat a whole lot of bananas to get to that point, but thanks for pointing that out. :-)
I'm okay with using those calories for bananas because it's a quick snack and goes great in my smoothies. I'm not worried about the sugar content either. I just like them. I've had my potassium levels checked as well and they are average. My cardiologist actually said I need more potassium in my diet, but with the amounts I typically eat I really don't think it's humanly possible.0 -
I don't want to eat anything everyday, variety is the spice of life.0

Bananas will kill you. It has been proven that everyone that has ever eaten a banana ends up dying.0

Love bananas, they're my favorite fruit. I've been eating one every day for more years then I can remember.0

I eat half a banana every day. As long as it fits in your macros, go for it!0

I'm having deja vu......0

It is a rare day that I don't have at least 1 banana, often I have 2. I'm hoping they rename the produce section after me at our local grocery store!0
-

lol I am sorry you don't have any education... and having a degree in exercise science and nutrition is not bro science as you would call it... sorry you are a bro with no education, maybe since you do not know much about nutrition you should stay out of these forumsbananas are awesome!! I eat them because I like them
I'll go a few weeks where I have one everyday, then drop off and go a few months without.
They're so versatile, so you can do so many things. Lately I've been putting them in my morning protein shake [greek yogurt, almond milk, protein powder and a banana]. Or I love toast with sliced bananas and a little bit of peanut butter.0 -
This is what I tell myself when it comes to fruits (Banana being the top one since its my favorite fruit outside of mangos)
Pros:
Good fiber
Curbs hunger
Curbs sweet tooth
Ideal snack food
Gives me the monkey powa!
ITS ALL NATURAL FOOD (this is a big thing for me, I dont deny anything thats natural)
Source of good sugar preventing me from chasing after bad sugar
Good source of potassium though not the best
Edit: "fun to eat" in the Pros! All the crazy ways you can peel it and eat it = too fun!
Cons:
High calories (about 110 calories. This is still half the calories of a candy bar btw)
High in sugar
All in all, I think bananas or any other fruit is amazing. It satisfies my inner child and prevents me from making unhealthy food choices0 -
I eat 2 a day since I bike/run so much0

I eat a banana every day but it takes up 14g of my 36g of sugar allowed per day so I'm almost ALWAYS over on that category. Should I cut back on them? I exercise five days a week, four days are runs and one day is a boot camp class. I heard banana's are a great source of energy but is the sugar too much?
Watching your sugar is always a good idea, but I never heard of anyone becoming unhealthy from eating a banana a day! (unless of course you are allergic!)

I have one every day for the potassium, but I don't track sugar because I really don't care about it. I lost most of my weight tracking only one thing, calories.0
