I know that to alot of you this may sound crazy. But I did this little workout that I stated below to be so out of breath that it took atleast 2 minutes afterwards to get my breath. It didn't seem like much when I put this exercise together, but man was it hard for me to do. Let me know whether or not that seemed like an intence workout, or just sounds like im in bad need of getting in shape lol. And Im wanting a workout that I can go at my own pace at first since I get winded fast, and then Can add more endurance later. Anyone have any suggestions on exercises that burn alot of calories that has done well for you?

20 jumping jacks
5 push-ups
10 leg lifts
50 crunches
jog in place 1 min
10 squats
10 jumping jacks
5 push-ups
5 leg lifts
25 crunches
jog in place 1 min
5 squats
20 jumping jacks
15 mountain climbers
touching hands to floor and kicking feet out behind me in push-up form then bringing them back to chest and jumping up reaching hands toward ceiling 10 times (This is what really got me winded)
15 crunches and done

It sounds like it is pretty intense. I am definitely going to try it.
I like the Jillian Michaels DVD's. They are intense, but I don't feel like I get as good of a work out from anything else that I do.

You are doing great to come up with something and push yourself. I first started working out (other than the treadmill) this past November and I remember how hard it was to keep up with anything. I started out with Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred dvd workout, it has a lot of these same movements and also variations of them, it does 3 minutes of strength/resistance, 2 minutes of cardio, 1 minute of abs and then does 2 more circuits like that but with different movements each time. I really liked having a 'program' to follow that I knew a lot of people had already had success with. Girl you have done awesome to come up with your own plan and push through it! You really might like something like that 30DS workout, though, b/c it has 3 different workouts (you do each one for 10 days) and it has some different ab exercises other than just plain crunches, they get at those abs in different ways. If you do a search on here of '30 day shred results' there are tons of threads where people show their before&afters, honestly it is a great workout for beginners b/c she shows modifications and you can use whatever size weights you are able to use. But probably the main reason I'm suggesting it is b/c it kicked my @ss when I first started b/c I was so out of shape, and I got amazing results in the month it took me to complete it. :-) She has other dvds, too, I'm doing 'Ripped in 30' now which has harder movements, but 30 Day Shred is a challenge and at the same time completely doable. Plus it's only $9 at Walmart. ;-) That's the thing that got me to start actually enjoying exercise b/c I saw big results, now I'm just about ready to join a gym and start lifting bigger weights. :-)

This kind of exercise is called a burpee. Thought you'd like to know so you don't have to type that explanation out everytime :)

I found that one of the best ways to burn calories and gain endurance was through intervals - so for instance, do jumping jacks hard for 30 seconds, then do something light (i.e. march in place). You can do that for pretty much all of these exercises - i.e. 5 pushups where you go as far as you can, then 5 where you are on your knees, or only go halfway down. The goal is not to stop moving, but vary the intensity to keep your body working.
  • Good Intese was what I was aiming for. I love jillian michaels. She can def kick your butt haha

also try a tabata form of workout.
20 sec exercise (as many reps as you can)
    10 sec rest
20 sec repeat exercise (as many reps as you can)
    10 sec rest

repeat same exercise for 8 times (4 minutes total)
rest one minute, thats one Tabata
move on to next exercise you can usually so 8 Tabatas in one hour and trust me that hour goes by fast.
  • I have that DVD but only did it for 2 days. Man was I sore. Guess I should have toughed it out. I will try again. Thanks for the information :)

sounds pretty intense to do all these back to back

do you rest in between each one?

    I sometimes will do

yoga stretching and strength training for 20 minutes
then 1 or 2 sets of 20 pushups
then 1 or 2 sets of 5-6 pullups
    then another set of pushups
    then another set of pullups
    squats
    more yoga stretching
then will go ride my bike moderate energy expenditure for 30 minutes to an hour
  • Thanks for that tip. I guess that makes since, because I was once told on a tred mill if you go at a fast pace then a slow and keep repeating that, that you burn more calories then at a steady pace because your heart rate has to work more

If you are that winded afterward, then it was intense. Everyone has a different level of intensity and yours will likely increase over time. Just keep pushing yourself.

To be truthfull I had to rest during the Burpee's I was so winded from all the other exercises that by the time I got to that one I could only do 4 and had to catch my breath a little. Thats probably why I was so winded because I didn't rest

I would also suggest the 30 day shred. i'm doing it now. The first 3 or 4 days were killer for me. It's finally getting easier but i'm soon to be switching to level 2 so i'm sure i'll be sore again next week! I haven't lost alot of weight but i can tell i'm losing alot of inches...
Good luck! I know you can stick with it!

Yeah and let me know if you thought it was intense

I agree that Jillian Michaels 30DS would be a good step for you! The routine you did would have KILLED me in the beginning...and probably would still be a challenge now! :) Stick with it, and you'll see a big improvement in endurance!

You should try 30DS long enough to get to Level 2....Level 1 was a little easy for me so I went to Level 2 after 5 days and what a difference! Try it and report back what you think ;)

I'm doing Ripped In 30 now and it's just as hard...can only do it a few times a week (training for a half-marathon) but it's tough as well.

It looks like a pretty good and intense workout. I would suggest moving the burpees earlier in it so you have the energy to do them with correct form. I'm also not a big fan of crunches as they are hard on the back, at least they can be. I much prefer planks, side planks and stability ball roll outs among others.

Thats a good Idea. I will have to move it towards the top. And I will have to try those others. Thanks for sharing
