Milk Substitute?

I use Horizon 2% milk. For EVERYTHING. I want something that's less calories for my shakes in the mornings. I am not a fan of soy milk (my daughter used to be lactose intollerant, and that stuff is gross) Suggestions?

I like almond milk, I'm not a milk drinker at all, but I'll use almond milk in cereal or shakes0 -
Agreed. Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (Unsweetened Vanilla) tastes pretty dang close to real milk. I'd avoid soy milk too, not only is it kind of nasty (to me anyway) I'm not a big fan of anything made from soy due to the hormonal effects it can have in people.0

Almond milk doesn't taste like dairy, but I we use it for everything in our house, because I don't like cow's milk or soy milk. It's a little sweeter, but if you're looking for something that tastes like cow's milk, you won't find anything that does without actually buying cow's milk itself.0

Personally, I like the taste of almond milk but it's a lot thicker than regular milk. Coconut milk is good if you don't milk the slight coconut taste. In shakes, I prefer the coconut milk. In cereal, I prefer the almond.. I buy both0 -
The best I have found is Kara dairy free alternative - its based on coconut0

I use to hate soy milk as well but I like my Silk Milk I like the chocolate and Vanilla flavor the coconut is good to what is even better is the almond but I don't buy it after the miss hap of my son drinking it by mistake he is allergic to almonds’. Even though he knows better to look before eating and drinking things he is 18 so he knows better. The other type of milk we by is low fat 1% milk.
Good Luck in finding something0 -
I agree with the above posters about Almond Milk. I switched and I can barely taste the difference I love my Almond Milk!0

I agree with unsweetened almond milk (Blue Diamond brand). It has a lighter but creamy taste compared to cow's milk. Also less calories than fat free cow's milk. I tried Silk Brand almond milk and didn't like it at all.0

I agree with the almond milk and the coconut milk. I also drink flax milk (I cook and make mixed drinks with the other 2, but will drink flax milk straight up). Flax USA makes a couple flavors of it, but I've only had the original ar 50 calories, it's not bad at all. My local Wal-marts care it as well. It doesn't taste like milk, but has a slightly sweet, almost creamy nutty (well flax-y) flavor.
Also chocolate almond milk is really good if you are wanting a treat. (I've made a really good pudding with chocolate almond milk, chia seeds, and a bit of sweetner [I used agave]. It's sort of like chocolate tapioca pudding. The chia seeds are necessary for it to thinken up in the refrigerator.)0 -
I can't drink dairy milk, nor do I want to... ick.... so I've been drinking soy forever (widely available). But since almond milk is also now widely available, I don't use soy milk ever.
I can't compare the taste of almond or coconut milk to real milk, but for what it's worth, almond milk tastes nothing like soy milk. And my father-in-law, an avid milk drinker, will use almond milk, if that says anything!0 -
I use So Delicious brand Coconut Milk in Vanilla and Original. I drink it by the glass, in cereal, for baking, in coffee or tea. I LOVE it.
The health benefits are amazing.0 -
Why not just switch to skim?0

OMG I found the BEST milk substitute....and in fact it taste better than milk Its called Blue Diamond Almond Vanilla Milk (unsweetened) and its only 40 calories for serving!! Im so in love with this product....you can add it in coffee drinks, on cereal, great for recipes, etc....just super good Its not super sweet but has a yummy vanilla flavor thats very light.
You can find it in the non-refrigerated area (boxed milks) or where milk is depending on your grocery store.0 -

Just switched to almond milk. Brands taste different. Im a fan of almond breeze0

I have never liked cows milk, even when I was a kid. I really don't like the flavor of soy milk either. I use unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze for cereal and rice milk for cooking. Oh well now I think on it, it depends what I am cooking. I guess I use both for cooking My boys LOVE chocolate Almond Breeze.0

Put in another vote for almond milk. I found it tastes the closest to cow's milk. I started with half unsweetened and half sweetened then worked my way down to completely unsweetened.0

I love almond milk too! Let us know what you think0

Try making your own almond milk - you can control what goes into it (and don't have to worry about added chemicals or sweeteners)!
Add 1 cup raw whole almonds to the bottom of a blender. Fill with as much water as you like. Place the lid on and let sit for 8 to 12 hours. After one hour, come back and blend it on high for 2 full minutes. Strain through cheese cloth or a fine-meshed sieve and pour into a pitcher. Homemade almond milk that you made and will never have to wonder what's in it!0 -

Nice !!
Thanks for the recipe !!
I bet it is also much lower in cost to do it that way0 -
Try oat milk by vitasoy, very nice0

I like the silk coconut milk. It has less sugar than real milk too!0

If you want something that still tastes like dairy, just do skim. I know you said yuck, but it depends I guess on the person. I can't have cow's milk or soy and I love the taste of cow milk, Almond milk just doesn't do it for me, tasted nothing like milk to me. Coconut milk is way to sweet for me, Hemp milk i really didn't like, so now I have rice milk. It's ok, it does the job, but for me the closest was soy, but since I can't have it, rice milk is go to.0

Silk Unsweetened Almond milk - vanilla
35 cals per 8 oz.0 -
Almond milk isn't too difficult to make yourself, either. DW & I rotate between buying Blue Diamond Unsweetened and just making it ourselves. Sometimes when we make it we will toss a date into the mix for a touch of sweet flavor.0
