Has anyone cured their acid reflux?

I have severe reflux that burns my throat and affects my breathing. Has anyone with similar symptoms managed to cure (or greatly reduce) their reflux and get off of the meds after losing weight?

I found a good thread. It looks like it's 50/50 whether weight loss cures it or not. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones.

You may have a hiatal hernia. Your stomach pushes up through your diaphragm into your chest cavity. I had mine repaired an I haven't had heartburn or reflux since.

I have! I used to take prescription acid reflux medication daily. I have been off of it since losing weight. Now I only get an occasional flair up-mostly from overeating or eating spicy or salty foods.

I do, actually. I would love to have it repaired. It's definitely something I'm going to consider if losing weight doesn't cure the reflux.

I have pretty severe reflux. If I drink something cold and lie down, I can feel it backing up into my chest. It happened before I gained weight.

But the heartburn started pretty abruptly. I can pinpoint the exact month it happened. I had been able to take aspirin up until then. I not only took it without food, I could take it without water. All of a sudden I couldn't tolerate it. I had heartburn all the time. Zantac was my friend, and I always had a bottle of mylanta around. That went on for years.

Then I needed antibiotics for something else. I suddenly stopped getting heartburn. All I can figure is I had H.pylori and the antibiotics treated it by accident. I still have reflux, and I still avoid lying down with a full stomach because it can't be good having your stomach contents coming up like that, but I rarely have pain.

I have acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. The reflux isn't gone, but it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than it was when I was heavier. I used to take Prilosec twice a day to keep it under control (AND ate tums like candy too). Now that I'm thinner, I take one Prilosec a day (basically because the doctor who did my endoscopy said not to allow the acid to back into my throat as I had pre cancerous cells from it not being well controlled for too many years) and I do just fine. A few weeks ago, I ran out of Prilosec and ended up going 4.5 days without it - I did fine. No issues at all. I suspect I could go off it, but I won't risk it after being warned to not let it happen.

My diet consisted of several of the common causes (greasy foods, spicy foods, chocolate, alcohol).

Once I eliminated "most" of those, good to go.

My reflux started going away after about 25lb loss. My total was 45lbs. Now I only get it with certain foods. I cannot eat bagels, hotdogs, cheese its, fatty {restaurant} hamburgers, and too much pizza. So I just stay away from the foods that hurt.

I use to drink baking soda nightly but when I was eating healthy I did not need it. with that being said 2 years ago I had my gallbladder taken out and now I never have heartburn or acid reflux.

Ever since Ive lost weight I no longer have had acid reflux!!! I mean when I was 320 EVERYTHING would trigger it. Pizza, Peppers, Cucumbers and other things. It was getting ridiculious! But since Ive continued losing weight I no longer have that problem! It feels so good! I use to get it so bad it would make me throw up. :( I hated it with a passion!!! I wish you the same luck!

I have been diagnosed with hiatl hernia and acid reflux and doing two things has eliminated about 98% of my symptoms. I raised the head of my bed about 4 inches and I avoid eating within 3-4 hours of going to bed. I don't take any medications anymore and if I feel "the burn" I drink some water and/or take a couple Tums, but I don't usually wake up because of acid reflux anymore, unless I eat too close to bedtime.

I completely cut out pop and mine is almost completely gone. I still get it once in a while if I eat a lot of fruit but it is bearable. Before I stopped drinking pop I was getting it multiple times a day and it woke me up multiple times at night.

I am in my BMR and when I was 104 lbs I still had issues with GERD. I since have a hiatal hernia and need to have an endoscopy:sad: I am really scared. But, I hope and pray that your issues will be healed with you losing weight! Remember every body reacts differently and that what makes you you! I wish you all the best!!:flowerforyou:

After dropping about 25 pounds it went away for me. I used to take Prilosec every day but I haven't needed it for about a year.

I used to have HORRIBLE heart burn everyday. It lasted probably around a year or two. When I started taking walks every day it completely went away. When the walks stopped it came back. Then I realized my trigger foods and I haven't had heartburn since. Nutrition and exercise is amazing!

    ME ME ME ME

I had such bad Acid reflux, I was starting to snor at night cause my throat was soo burned up by it, I had to take tums daily, and the doctor gave me acid reflux medicen, but I am kinda a hippi at heart and never took it.

I learned one thing that helped during the burnning was red apples, it really did help I just made sure to have one a day, then I lost 31 pounds and I don't have any problems AT ALL,

Some times I will feel it kinda comming back when I eat to much of certain foods but it goes away fast, eating more good foods and loising weight helped SOOO much,

I am sorry your going threw this I know how awful it is, I hope you get relif soon =)
