A geek is someone like me... Loves computers, technology.. Loves building computers, spends all my time playing console, pc games, or fiddling with some piece of technology or other.. Kind of repeating myself here...

A nerd is more of a boffin.. Very smart.. Normally scientifically.. ITs the whole sterio type of the thick rimmed glasses, brases, spits when they talk, mad scientist kind of thing..
..Very socially awkward.. Like a complete dork..

A nerd could also be apart of Anonymous...hacking for a purpose. To imply that nerds don't provide anything of benefit is a disservice in my opinion.

So funny that anyone would be so passionate about the definition. It's inconsistent. Don't let yourself be defined and it won't matter so much!!!

Would the nerds be playing SWTOR (Star Wars The Old Republic) in their mother's basements now?

To be honest back in the day I believe . . .

A geek had all of the social awkwardness of a nerd but not nearly as much of the intelligence.

Nowadays, that is not the popular definition since being a geek has become a good thing since that time.

I think this definition is the clearest, but I see why it isn't as popular these days.

From your profile you seem to be one tough *kitten* who can be anyone she wants to be and will kick anyone's *kitten* if they try to tell her differently. You tell us who you are.

    geek  [geek]

    3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

    nerd   [nurd]

    1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.

    2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

I think geek is better, but the terms have sort of lost their meanings, as people nowadays think that watching weird TV shows and playing video games makes them geeks or nerds. Sort of like 'lol', which used to mean laughing out loud; but nowadays is used as a punctuation mark.
  • From the IT Crowd:

Interviewer: Oh no, I remember. You were going to tell me what IT means."

Jen: "I don't know what IT means, alright? I never thought to ask- it didn't really affect me as I'm too busy managing one man whose idea of an adult night out is Laserquest followed by pornography, and another who collects wires. Have you heard Guided by Voices? They're a band."

    Interviewer: "No."

Jen: "I have. I've heard everything they've ever done. They're good. I'm a bit of a fan now."

Interviewer: "Isn't that a good thing?"

Jen (disgusted): "I shouldn't even know who they are! They've turned me into one of them. I am... one of them. That's why you need me. I am your conduit. I am your bridge. ICH BIN EIN NERD!"

In my day, the nerds were playing Dungeons and Dragons with funny dice. The geeks were cutting school and getting into trouble and still getting good grades in school.

And I'm not saying which side of that fence I was on.

In Australia, I reckon the answer is that they are the same thing! We dont really use the word Geek here at all, so maybe it depends on where you live as to what its called rather than what characteristics you have!!! Either way, they should be avoided.......unless they can be changed!! Any parent that lets their child grow up as a Nerd should be shot!

I think the terms might have switched meanings somehow, sometime, somewhere. My parents tell me that being considered a nerd used to be bad, and being a geek was cool. Now, it's the other way around. Does anyone know how that happened?
