Diet pills - anyone use them?

I have take a lot of pills and supplements over the years.....and I've always gained the weight back, quickly. This time, I'm just doing good-old-fashioned eating right & exercising.
I've lost 24lbs since December (14 after I joined MFP) and I plan on keeping it off for the rest of my life by continuing to eat right and exercise.
If you want long term results, you have to change your life. You can't expect to pop a pill for a few months, lose some weight, and then keep it off once you go back to your old habits. Our bodies don't work like that.
If pills were the answer, wouldn't we all be skinny by now?0 -
I was taking diet pills but I had to cut them out because they were three calories each and I have trouble sticking to 45 calories per day as it is!0

Not worth the time, money or the side effects.
I made the mistake of testing out just about everything on the market when I was a teenager and looking for a "quick fix."
7 years later, the harm they did then to my body is still occasionally sending me to the hospital.
If I could go back in time, I'd tell myself not to be an idiot, and that this is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE, not a 30 day plan to quickly lose weight and somehow magically keep it off by eating junk food and taking pills.
Return your pills. Be smart.0 -

Thanks for everyone's input! I did look up the side effects and they are scary. I'm not looking for a quick fix, I do understand that this is a healthier lifestyle I'm working towards. And I have been eating a lot healthier and I work out almost everyday. I just been dieting on and off for years and I guess I was looking for something that would jump start my weightloss. I usually have no energy in the afternoon and i really have to push myself to workout. MFP has been great and I'm so glad I found you guys. The support is awesome!0

Being a nurse I have seen more than a few patients who have used either prescription meds or over the counter pills/supplements to lose weight. Most are not really good for you in the long run. As well, you already know that really changing your 'diet' (dont like to use that word, but in this case I mean, the normal amount of food you eat), and adding more exercise/activity will help more to lose weight. For the most part, any of the weight you may lose, wont stay off once you stop taking the pills, if they work at all. Unless you are ready and willing to put a lot money into the 'miracle' pills, I would just manage with good food decisions and activity. You CAN do this!0

Well, Welcome to MFP! And I agree - don't diet! Change your life and you will see some amazing changes in your body. There are plenty of people here to help and support you (and lots of opinions to sift through - but that's the internet!).0 -
I prefer meth. I see results alot faster.
Once you lose all of your teeth, you'll weigh even less!
Actually, I am taking a diet pill in addition to eating better and working out. It doesn't seem to be making any difference at all whatsoever.0 -

As someone with hypertension caused by hyperthyroidism, I can't understand why someone would want to take a pill to give them those symptoms. I'm on the other side and taking beta blockers to stop those very same symptoms.
Just trying to get through a day with the shakes, palpatations, feeling like my heart is beating out of my chest and shortness of breath when even just walking, why would anyone want to force that on their bodies? Just crazy in my eyes. :noway:0 -
Diet pills are really only good for one thing. making lots of money for the companies that sell them, same goes for diet foods(in my opinion). Don't go on a diet, and don't rely on a "Magic Pill". Just watch what your eating, track your calories and stick with it. After awhile it will be second nature. I eat 2 tuna sandwiches a day for a split lunch, each has almost 2 tablespoons of "Mayo" in them, I've lost 30 lbs in 3 months! Just wish like hell I could quit smoking HAHA!0

I've been taking a supplement, hasn't done anything. However, when I decided to add in another one, I landed in the ER (over this past weekend). It wasn't a good time!0

My mom ordered Hoodia a while back after reading very positive reviews but she claimed they didn't help her so she gave them to me. I rarely take them unless I remember. I guess they help supress my appetite, but that could be psychological.0

After ephedrine was removed from them, they all became fairly useless. Ephedrine worked, but people abused it, and died, and it got banned.
I do not take diet pills regularly, but when going to dietary extremes as i do from time to time, I take one for energy. VPX Meltdown.
Never had a side effect from any of them, and in the past, about 15 years back, i took xenedrine, hydroxycut, ripped fuel, etc. More for energy than for anything else.
Depends on what your workouts entail, if you are jogging, or walking, or doing somekind of treadmill work, then it shouldn't be necessary. My workouts tend to be a bit more extreme though, and tough to accomplish when running on a good deficit.0 -
if diet pills worked.. WHY on earth would I be spending hours at the gym?? why the **** wouldnt i be eating mcdonalds all day long? and taking this OH SO magical pill everyday to make me thin... itd be easier right?

My Dr prescribed Adipex which is also Phentermine in May 2010. I lost 26 lbs the first month and 16 the second month and 4 the 3rd month. It worked Great at first and then tapered off. Of those 46 lbs I kept off 33 for about 2 years.
To be completely honest I had a plateau a few weeks ago and I took 1/2 an Adipex each day for 5 days, It gave me amazing energy and I lost about 3 lbs that week.
But whenever you stop taking it you have less energy and you have appetite cravings that you don't want. Its not worth taking because of what happens when you stop.0
