    3...Anything times 0 = 0...then add 3 = answer is 3.

Ok, The answer is 7... Not three. I was taught "B.O.M.D.A.S = Brackets Of Multiplication, Division , addition and Subtraction. Multiplication first. 5x0 =0 , 9-5=4+3 =7.

New website: www.mymathfitnesspal.com, providing calorie tracking and remedial math help. Coming soon. Keep your eyes peeled.

    Lol.

And for starters, you have to add your calories ... YOURSELF!
Imagine: "blah blah" burned (5+9)/2*74 calories doing 25*(42-12) minutes of "jogging".

the only thing times 0 in that expression is 5.
the 9 - 5 has to be done later because of the order of operations.

Lol just seen this..Posted my revision above. :D

BTW, I admit to suck at Math, that is why I married a surveyor. haha

Hahaha -- and then we could combine the 'exercise calories' debate with the people who miscalculated their calories because they accidentally did 5 + 9/2*74 ... oh, this would be bad.

I'm really concerned for my kids who are in elementary school. So many teachers are getting this wrong and don't see why. Please don't justify if you're wrong. LEARN FROM IT!!!!

I don't have kids, but it is pretty disheartening that teachers are getting this wrong. :-/

    in my house, math happens.

    7. Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.

parenthesis, exponents, multiplication/division (in the order they appear), addition/subtraction (in the order they appear).

Last year, my daughter needed help with math. I taught her the "is over of=% over 100" way of doing her problems to find an unknown #. She got the problems all correct. Her teacher said, "tell your mom to stop trying to teach you math. That method may have worked for these problems, but it won't for the next set of percentage problems." Uh. Yes they did. Dumb@$$. It's the freaking formula used. Math is a science. It is consistent. And this person gets a paycheck for this?? Really?

In defense of the school system... she was a substitute, so maybe she had only graduated high school. Who knows? Although, if that's the case, then I'm more qualified to teach than she is; I do have a degree, even if it's only an AS, I did get a 4.0! :)

If you use simple math like you learn in elementary school, there is no negative numbers. it would go 9 - 5 = 4 + 5 = 9 X 0 = 0 + 3 = 3. This is why my first anwser was 3. Hmmm

The other problem (and not to be mean, just picking on your quote because this is a common error) is that you are writing equals between things that are not equal. 9-4 is not equal to 4+5. This causes no end of problems in more advanced math classes -- where people actually need to work with strings of equalities.

So a shout-out to the elementary teachers out there -- please don't teach your students to write this. We have to spend so much time un-teaching it at university.

It says this is why my first anwser was 3. I just looked at it and added it as simple as I could. I know the anwser is 7. But thanks.

How many calories do I burn if I laugh for 12 minutes straight?

Here is why everyone is wrong... What base are those numbers in? OH SNAP!

Yeah..... except NO. These aren't logarithms.

I am not talking about logs.
    Base 10 = 012345789
    base 16 = 0123456789ABCDEF
    base 2 = 01
    base 5 = 01234

    etc...

    7 in base 2 = 0111
    7 in base 16 = 7
    in base 10 = 7
    in base 5 = 12

    etc...

It's an implied base 10, unless otherwise noted. :grumble:

for example 160 in base 10 really is

    1*10^2) + ( 6^10^1) + (0 * 10^1)

notice 10 is the base. the exponent is the number position hundreds, tens, ones. it starts at 0
    (n * base^numberPosition) + (n * base^numberPosition)

    n is the number in the number position i.e 1, 6, 0
But because the first number in the original question is a 9, this would have to be in at least base 10 (but you already knew that right???).

    1 + 1 = 10
    1 + 1 + 1 = 11
    1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 100

some of you need to lighten up
i don't think answers to this math equation predict the fate of humanity

Maybe math illiteracy in the general public won't destroy humanity. However, education is my life's passion, and it's seriously depressing me how it has failed so many.

I'll give you that, there are a lot of problems with the education system.
However, just because people in this thread cannot answer the question does not mean they've been failed or that they should be ashamed of themselves.
I couldn't answer this question...do I know basic math? nope. My syntax is atrocious. I had great teachers but I never applied myself. I have also forgotten most of what I have learned because I do not use it. That being said, I am on the honour roll in the top university in my country...hence why I don't feel like whether people can answer this math question or not predicts the fate of our humanity.
I completely agree with that their are issues with the education system. I just think there was quite a dramatic reaction from some people to what I thought was a light, fun thread.

I wasn't saying it was going to be War of the Worlds because far, (FAR) too many people got this wrong. If you watch the first 3 minutes of Idiocracy (it's on YouTube...the movie is not good, but the first 3 minutes are awesome...and probably way too true) my point is it's going downhill, and fast.

Here on this very board, is a reading teacher writing incomprehensible sentences and doing basic math wrong. The question was basic math we use everyday, not Trig or Calculus, which has absolutely no use in a non-math/non-science based career. I'll be the first to admit that, despite taking Calculus twice (once in high school, once in college), if I had a gun to my head telling me to find the derivative, I'd be dead. But multiplication? Addition? Subtraction? Everyone does that every day, whether they notice or not.

There are an increasing number of English and Math illiterates being passed through the school system, with no one to properly teach them, or to even notice how much help they need. These are the people who will be in control of government and corporate America when Gen X is retiring. And that's SCARY.

Of course it is not the end of humanity. I certainly did not mean to sound that dramatic. It was a scathing comment on the educational system, nothing more.
