Absolutely not true, but if you use a ton of sugar or like it sweet, then yes. I drink black coffee for 3 years and I don't remember the last time I was sick.

One cup a day won't kill you and I'm sure there's research to prove it ;-p We all have to have at least one vice!

Coffee is the nectar of the gods! There's nothing unhealthy about it until you add all the cream and sugar. It has caffeine, yes, but you'd have to drink a TON of it every day for that to really even matter all that much.

I have one cup in the morning. I quit using real cream and turbinado sugar. This combination was one of the things that resulted in me having a butt I could use to show home movies.

Since I had the epiphany that I needed to lose some weight, I switched to light soy milk and Truvia, and I still enjoy coffee without the added 'spread.'

I stick to one or one and a half cups. I read somewhere that you want a little buzz before working out, but too much defeats the purpose of sparking the testosterone. This could be complete crap.

Anything more than one or one and a half cups results in turning me into Buzzy the Hummingbird for the day.

Coffee used to be, at one point, the highest source of antioxidants and it continues to remain as one of the highest. A quick google research will reveal this. Even if it wasn't, it isn't particularly bad depending on the individual. Coffee is actually fantastic for someone who is classified as a fast metabolizer (quite a few health benefits) while someone who is a slow metabolizer is at risk by drinking coffee. Again, google is your friend. You can quickly search to see if you're a fast or slow metabolizer, why this effects your health, etc. All I can say is that I'm happy I'm a fast metabolizer. I sometimes drink 4-5 cups a day.
nothing at all wrong with coffee. for that matter, no food is really unhealthy. it's the amount you eat that makes it unhealthy.

That's exactly what I said today!

Nothing wrong with coffee unless you're putting in a lot of 18% cream and sugar (and even then it's not the coffee that's the problem) or you're sensitive to caffeine (drink decaf).

Caffeine has a mildly diuretic effect but I'll give up my coffee when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.......

^^this. And the water in the coffee (unless you are pounding really strong espressos) more than compensates for the mild diuretic effect.

does anyone notice that if they drink coffee on a regular basis you start to gain weight? I love my coffee in the morning but if i drink it everyday i notice i start to put on weight...i am including it in my calorie consumption, and still stay under, do you think its just a matter of water retention? Is there anyway to have my coffee and not put on weight?

:drinker: :drinker: Coffee bad for you?!!!! Sacrilege!!!! No actually in moderate doses like 3-4 cups it's great for you. I might be biased as I believe coffee is manna from heaven, but hey. Have your coffee and enjoy it! I drink it black, but I do believe that large doses of sugar and cream cancel any benefits from the actual coffee. :drinker: :drinker:

For every substance you can find a study that says it's bad, but these days breathing can cause issues, so whadda gonna do?!
If coffee messes with you don't drink it! If you like it and it does not mess with you and you miss it, drink it!

The only things wrong with coffee are that it can stain your teeth, and you can become addicted to caffeine very easily. Coffee itself is zero calories, and I've found that it's quite the appetite suppressant, which is helpful in the morning. :)

I add skim milk and splenda to mine, making the caloric intake minimal, and I do half decaf half regular, so I don't have to worry as much about getting too much caffeine into my system. That way I get the appetite suppressing qualities without the cream and sugar and (as much) caffeine. :P

I cut my coffee from 40 to 10 calories by switching from half and half to almond milk. I also have a little shot glass with measurements labeled on it from Bed, Bath, and Beyond that I use religiously to measure what I put in it. It was only about $3, and really keeps me from putting in what I think is 2 Tbsp and what really is 2Tbsp.

The "science" I used is based on Dr. McDougall's book "Digestive Tuneup" you pointy-headed gusano.
It's obvious from these posts that you don't want to ask an addict for advice about their addiction. Coffee IS BAD for you. It has properties that are good, but overall, it is a negative. It raises blood pressure, but even worse, it raises the acid level in your body. Your stomach has to produce more acid to properly digest it. The excess acid leads to bloating and worse. One of the greatest dangers to a person's health is a high stomach acid level. Excess acid can lead to ulcers, burn your esophagus, damage your intestine, your colon. I know it sucks to hear this. I drank a cup of coffee a day for years, but since I have quit, I feel much better, my stomach has shrunk and the occasional aching in my stomach has gone away.
It's not bad for you in moderation. You're confusing your anecdotal and unconfirmed experience with actual science.

You can always find someone who will say "I stopped eating/drinking <substance x> and I feel so much better" for every substance known to man. It's called correlation, not causation and it's not scientific.
    [/quote]

Wow - at the risk of being called a worm or maggot......unless you have a sensitivity to it, the benefits far outweigh the negative effects. And the bloating thing - thats a new one on me.

I drink 4+ cups of black coffee everyday. Without it, I would die, so it has to be good for you. It saves lives.

Hmmm...I agree, except that I must have my coffee or OTHERS could die.

Not really, but I do enjoy it. :drinker:

I think it all depends on the person. After four years of Monster/Red Bull-powered all-nighters throughout college, my body's become less able to handle caffeine (kind of like alcohol...), so sometimes drinking coffee will give me the jitters and make me feel like I'm having mild heart palpitations. But other people have had it their entire life and are fine :)

It's funny, I've been feeling out of it and have had a headache most of the day. After seeing this topic, I realized it could very well be because I didn't have time to make coffee this morning :/
