Aldi grocery store - favorite foods!

maybe it's already been said - I didn't read through all 5 pages, but Aldi is owned by the same people as Trader Joe's. Which is why they have a lot of natural products that don't contain HFCS and all that extra junk. Sure, there are still a lot of things that do, but I love that their breads and bagels are HFCS free!
:noway: I did not know that. They do have lot of items that don't contain HFCS. Of course most of the snack/junky type stuff has it but then again that stuff in every store has it in it.
My daughter is sensitive to HFCS and goes bananas so I love Aldi for the fact that we can find Non-HFCS breads and other things there.
The produce in our store is awful though. I have to stop somewhere else for produce. It is always already spoiling here. :frown:0 -

I'm a guy and one of my pet peeves is multiple stops for shopping. 1 list, 1 store. Get in, get out, go home. I don't want to waste an entire afternoon going to 4 different grocery stores. With coupons and other store's generics I don't find the price differences to be all that significant.
Hey, I'm a woman and feel the same way! I hate grocery shopping anyway. If I can't get everything on my list, then you don't get my business!
Our Aldi is right across from Walmart so I love it. I can get a cart full of the staples for $100 where that same cart would cost me $200 at Walmart. Then I just swing in there on my way home (or even a different day) for the things Aldi doesn't have.
To me, saving $100 is worth the extra trip.0 -
I LOVE Aldi's. Their prices on fresh fruits and veggies are so much lower than the other stores in my area. I also buy all of my eggs, nuts, frozen meats, and dairy products there because I save so much. My dog is also a big fan of their Shep brand dog treats! I have tried alot of their store brand products and have found very few that I didn't like.
Because I save so much, I don't mind going to two stores to get everything I need. I know this doesn't always work for everyone though.0 -
I am a fan of Aldi... but the prepared box foods, and salad dressings taste like crap. I don't buy that stuff, as I like to make things from scratch. Yes, this boy can cook. But my sister-in-law and her family serve it at parties, so I'll bring stuff of our own.
In a lighter note... the same company that owns Aldi's, owns Trader Joe's. Similar low prices, but organic wholesome foods. We have two in the Cleveland area and we spend about $200 each time we go... so much great stuff to choose from. One of the best tasting wines is their Charles Shaw brand at $4.99 a bottle. I remember not that long ago when it used to be called 2 buck Chuck! They are always offering samples of wines, cheeses, coffee, meats. My favorite place to shop, can't stress it enough!0 -
Wow, the Aldi I went into once just absolutely sucked :c
Too bad there's not one around here, I'd try it again.0 -
I love Aldi but sadly ours was burned down in last summer's riots, so no goodness from there for me any more.

I love Aldi's. I recently re-discovered them a few months ago. I absolutely love their fit and active chocolate peanut butter protein bars. My kids call them "candy bars" and ask for them all the time. The only thing I found (well my husband actually) didn't like was the cheese. We go to Aldi's get almost everything, then head to walmart and pick up cheese and reduced price meats to freeze. We've saved so much and we eat a lot better. I also pick up at least two tubs of Fage there.
We are on a tight budget so an extra 20 minutes to go 1 block to Walmart and get a few higher priced items is absolutely worth my time. We get way more for our money. I wish I didn't have to worry about finances.0 -

We have Aldi in the UK. It's branded as a budget supermarket and in my experience, you get what you pay for.
An awful lot of the things they sell (here, in any case) come under the heading of unhealthy junk food. My boyfriend buys chocolate there (knock-off Mars, Snickers and Twix, usually) - smaller than the real thing and with more calories & sugar.
I've yet to go in an Aldi and not see rotting fruit and veg on the 'fresh' aisle. I picked up strawberries last time I went in and they were blanketed in mould. The same frequently goes for tomatoes. Spinach and packaged salad leaves are usually ok on the shelf, but mushy and rotting within a day of buying them.
Twice I've bought 'fresh' chicken, well within its expiry date, only to get it home and find that it stinks to high heaven. I wouldn't even cook it to feed to the cats.
Their bread is ok, as are some of the tinned vegetables. Avocadoes are usually pretty good, and a lot cheaper than other supermarkets. Frozen berries & veg are fine, frozen tuna and salmon steaks are great.
Those things, along with name brand condiments and eggs (because they do free range eggs in cartons of 15), are about the only things I'll spend money on in there.0 -
I LOVE ALID!!! My family has shopped there even before they were in our state. We used to take a day trip to PA with a cooler in the trunk. It was the best because they were so cheap my brother and I got out own cart and could fill it ourselves. My parents would pick through for duplicates and then let us buy it all. :0) Of course, that junk would have to last a month or two but it was worth it to pick all our own stuff at 10 yrs old.
Also, there is a store called Save-A-Lot that is a lot like Aldi. Same concept (few name brands, buy your bags, etc). If there is no Aldi near you try to find one of these. Thankfully where I am I have both and can pick and choose as I like the frozen veggies as this store more (larger variety) but I like more of the Fit & Active stuff at Aldi. Though Save-A-Lot just started producing thier brand like that so we'll see how it goes.0 -
reading some of this makes me soooooo thankful I have one of the "good" aldi's. They always have bananas, apples, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, plums, and whatever else, along with all the veges. I haven't had a bad produce items. Actually haven't had a bad items. I was wary and tried one new thing each time, that way I didn't get a cart full of stuff I didn't like. I'm not disappointed.0

I used to go to Aldi in Germany all the time. It was great. I am pretty dissapointed of the Aldi Market here in the US. Not even comparable to german Aldis. Even though it is cheap, the quality lacks a lot. Stay away from the meat. I am pretty sure, they repacked some of it, after it expires. :noway:0

I love some things at Aldi's. I buy ground beef, lunch meat, eggs, cheese, milk, cereal, canned and frozen veggies, snacks, salad dressings, bbq sauce, mustard, pasta sauce, Fit and Active products.
I generally don't buy produce there because the quality is hit or miss and I live near an awesome produce market. But I have bought grapes, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers and onions there before and they were fine.
Every time I shop there I tell my husband I can't believe how much I got for so little money!0 -

For some stuff I like Aldi, and for some stuff I don't. Some minimally processed shelf stable stuff is ok. There isn't anything there I'm in love with though. I feel like there is too much processed stuff, which I don't buy a lot of, and not enough fresh products. I also find the selection often to be too limiting. I, unlike, many of the other posters have purchased products that I didn't like, most recently it was a brand of lunch meat.
I wish the produce at our local stores was half as good as what a lot of people in this thread are describing. Our locations (2 of them) have 1 two-side rack of produce. Some of it is ok, as in not spoiling, but some of it is. The selection of produce is usually limited though resulting in an extra stop for 1 or 2 ingredients.

I totally understand this. I hate shopping (and I'm NOT a guy! LOL) but with the rising prices and the fact that I have been a stay-at-home mom or part-time employed mom, finances have dictated otherwise.
I start at Aldi's. Their produce is hit or miss. I get all that I can (normally I always get broccoli, cauliflower, spinach/romaine (or artisan lettuces), cabbage, onions and potatoes here. In the spring/summer and fall I can get more but winter time their produce isn't as good looking. I have other products that I get as well. but you get the picture. I finish up at Wal-Mart.
I purchase their whole chickens and frozen fish. I need to check out the ground chicken. Otherwise our beed either comes from a local farmer (side of beef each year) or a local market that cuts their own.
I purchase our milk at Sam's club.0 -
