Why would a thread that speaks to spelling words correctly be banned or removed? My kids spell words in their text messages correctly because they know I can't stand misspellings!

    1. No Attacks or Insults and No Reciprocation

    a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic.

It's true that the rules prohibit attacking "the user's spelling or command of written English," which means that you can't attack a particular user for how he or she spells or uses the language. Here, however, we're criticizing -- in a very general way -- how people on this site spell. We're not talking about any one person. That's quite different, in my opinion, than attacking a particular user for his or her spelling or command of the language, which is what the rule prohibits.

Having said that, the above rule is often misinterpreted by moderators to mean, "you can't post any thread, ever, that talks about how people on MFP misuse the English language, even if you're not referring to a particular person or her post." Wrong, that's not what the rule says, but that's how it often gets interpreted.

That's why I suggested earlier that this thread will probably get locked. I've seen it done in similar circumstances (just last night, to be exact).

Man...this bothers me too! I make mistakes when I type sometimes, but the amount of times I see this mistake made is ridiculous! It's sort of like when people type "per say" when they mean "per se." If you don't know how to spell it, don't type it! Gahhh!

Drives me crazy too. But it seems that people don't give a crap about spelling and grammar these days anyway.

Many people keep referring to "loosing" weight. That's not the correct spelling.

    Thank you!

What about people who have lost more THEN 50lb?

Oh, they misspell too. I guess everybody does at some point.

Nope, I really don't give a crap about it. I am here to lose weight. Not have a second job as "Grammar Police."

If it really ruffles your feather's so much, you are welcome to quit the thread at any time. No, I am not asking you to leave. I am just wondering why in the world, it bothers you so much. Especially when there is so much else going on.

We are supposed to be here to help motivate other's and to get motivation ourselves when needed. I would not backhandedly slap someone who was giving/receiving support around here.

    Just my opinion.

Bless you and those in your world.

I'm glad this thread is back! HA! My dad was an English teacher and he corrected me and my brothers and sisters all of the time. I started correcting my kids when they learned to speak, and I didn't even think twice about doing it. It came naturally! My dad did laugh out loud over several spelling errors he had to correct; one I always remember was a note that was passed from a boy to a girl in one of his classes. It began: "Dear Sweatheart...."

Is it, though? Or is that the most funny post in this thread?

It's elementary school level grammar. It's annoying and distracting to see this mistake made again and again. As some people don't know the difference, I explained.

What amazes me the most is how annoyed the grammar police get. Really, it is just word's.

Some people are concerned with technological advancement in the scientific community...some people are concerned with the arrangement of letters, to each their own?

There is a difference between being hurt and being annoyed.

Seriously, though, when I see loosing weight, I picture a sh*tload of fat galloping down the road or something. It always makes me smile.
