In a previous post of mine, some people suggesting getting a HRM to help with knowing when I'm in the proper zone for max calories burnt and to maximize my workout. How will the HRM measure my calories when working on an incline? Will it still read accurately for calorie count? I've heard/read that you burn more when on an incline.

Question 2 (sorry if it's a stupid one, I'll probably have a few :o). )
If a HRM measure kilo calories, is this the same as measuring Calories (as stated on this site)? What is a min/mile? For example, running or walking a 6min/mile. Does this mean mile completed in that time? Sorry, I'm trying to get all this lingo and abbreviations right and understood.

I've been on my treadmill speed walking (well for me, I have very short legs) on an interval program. My top speed is 3.1 and my down speed is 1.8. How do you measure this when tracking your heart rate and calories? Do you average it out so that my average would be roughly 2.5?...for now anyway. This seems to be a good pace for me so far, I don't have to use the bars and can swing my arms in a natural motion and for the last half of my 40 minute session I have to push myself through the highs and appreciate the lows. I can feel the workouts in my legs for sure! Ugh, some of this can be confusing and I apologize if some of my questions are stupid, I just want to get in better shape and loose all this extra weight. So much to learn in the process, lol.

  • Sounds like you're off to a good start. I think that the incline will simply cause you to work harder thus elevating your heart rate and burning more calories. I think it best to use some kind of an incline but believe the calorie burn is more related to heart rate than just incline.

Treadmills generally give you speed in miles per hour. 3.1mph is roughly equivalent to a 20 minute mile. So in 20 minutes you should walk a mile or a little more at 3.1mph. 1.8mph is roughly equivalent to a 33.3 minute mile. I think you could average the time spent and speed for your calorie burn. Some prefer to chart how far they went at what speed though for future reference.

    Hope all that helps,
