That's so sad though. Stupid? Yes. But there are 8 kids who have no mother now. Because she didn't take care of herself. The article says she was showing signs of poor health for months... As ridiculous as her health habits were, I feel terrible for those children. Hopefully wherever they go, they'll have better health role models.

I used to smoke about 2 packs a day and drink about 2-4 liters of coke a day granted not as much as 2-3 gallons but still way too much. Used to. Also Lived off Cigarettes and Beer from about 18 to 23 lol then I grew up.

Now all the people are going to come out of the woodwork saying that water can kill you too. Of course this article didn't mention any other kind of health problems this women had. She also smoked. She could have had a flurry of heart problems already.

Yeah, I know. I thought I'd preempt the COKE = DEATH crowd.

The article said they suspect that she died from very low potassium caused by excessive fluid intake.

If I were the coroner I would have ruled it death by stupidity.

    Yeah too stupid to live

In university I did the same. Hardly ate any real food and drank at least 2 litres of pepsi a day. I was smoking almost 2 packs a day too! It really did start making me feel sick after awhile so I gave up both in my final year thankfully!!

I hope those children are more health concious than their mom. It's so sad, but so true, that excess anything will kill you. It clearly wasn't Coca Cola's fault that she over indulged and didn't take care of herself.

Poor children, that was such a young age to lose your mom over something so preventable.

More to the point, it clearly isn't an indictment of Coke. If you live on refined sugar, caffeine and water (which is what Coke is) and cigarettes, you're likely to have heart problems, likely deadly ones. Water is inarguably good for you, but if you live on 2~3 gallons of it, plus 30 cigarettes, per day, you will have exactly the same problems, health-wise, as she did. Does this make water deadly? Or should we maybe look at her problem as a lack of moderation rather than being "killed by Coke?"

Not to put too fine a point on it, but 2 liters is less than a quarter of what this woman drank. 2.6 gallons is 9.8 liters. I realize the post was written with an American audience in mind. A big part of her problem was that she was getting too much water from the Coke, which is why the hyperkalemia.

Technically Coke probably kept her alive longer than water would have. At least she was getting SOME calories from Coke

    I see your point, but...

If she had been drinking water she would have been hungry for actual food. Drinking the coke was giving her sugar and chemicals and nothing else. Maybe if she was drinking water she could have eaten food that had nutrients in them.

I am sorry, what is this about? I was reading an article towards the bottom of the page "Watching porn may shut down part of your brain"

I heard about this story earlier this week. Her family actually wants Coke Cola to place a warning label on their bottles to warn people about the dangers of 'overdosing' on 'Coke'. Why? If you drink ANY liquid in that same time frame and quantity you'd probably die (just a guesstimation).

I see this as less to do with what she drank and more so that you are responsible for the choices you make.

This is not the drink's fault. It is the fault of the person that could not make the choice to not do it.
