When I was a kid in Pennsylvania a truck would come around in the fall and my parents would buy a bushel of MacIntosh. Maybe it was because they were so farm fresh but I couldn't imagine a crisper, sweeter, juicier apple (and big too). I would sit on the back porch and cut slices off of one with a paring knife. Very good and vivid memory.

Honey crisp are my favorite. A couple of my kids prefer them too but two of my other kids prefer red delicious. My husband likes Braeburn's if they're on the greener side since he likes a little tartness. I love the bright, sweet, crispness of the Honey Crisp. They have a little zing but aren't tart and very, very juicy. There is one call the "Graple" that tastes like a grape but has the crispness of an apple. It's good but I feel like I'm eating frankenfood when I have one of those. Plus they're expensive.

I just tried ambrosia the other day and I think that's my new fave.

I've never heard of honey crisp or pink lady. I'd love to try those.

from the grocery store, year-round: Granny Smith and Honeycrisp

    from the orchard in-season: Macoun!
    and also...
August: Paula Reds (crisp, sour, and juicy)
September-Macintosh: (crisp for just a few weeks)
October-November: Granny Smith, Empire, Northern Spy.

Golden delicious but only when they are just picked. To ripe and you may as well use it in an apple pie Hmmmm.

Braeburn is a great red tart but sweet apple and my favorite. Gala is pretty close to it.
    Also love Granny smiths

It's a toss up between fuji and gala's for me for a grab and go snack but I have to use granny smiths when making my homemade applesauce.
