Anybody else wanna' geek out and talk PHOTOGRAPHY???
So I have the Canon 7D and 5D Mii and am heading to Alaska next month. Just picked up the 16-35 f/2.8 ii and want to get a graduated neutral density filter for landscapes. I am psyched out of my mind. Still using LR3 to post process. Can I get a witness!!??

would absolutely love to, shame I'm in the UK!0

mmmm those bodies sound sexy!
I am an amateur in the UK, I like taking pics of motorsport and I have dabbled a bit in astrophotgraphy. Although these days I am not getting time to do etither. :frown:
I am the proud owner of an EOS 20D which is great for my needs, though I do dream of winning the lotto and owning something like you, with a few massive lenses to boot! Going to Alaska to do landscapes sounds quite nice too! I expect you would get to see the northern lights from up there?! I'd love to image that!0 -
Jealous. I've been playing around with my little Canon S95. It's no slr but it sure is great for whipping out of the pocket and still getting great shots. 7D is one of the next things on my shopping list.
Have you ever checked out http://1x.com/ ?0 -

Checking out the sight now.
Let me recommend. www.fredmiranda.com...look at their forums...specifically the 'buy and sale' forum. I haven't bought a new lens or body in over six years. This is a reliable place to buy good used gear...don't buy new...not worth it. I just bought the 5D ii....right after the 5D iii was announced. Although I admit the reason I like the 7D is the AF system...and of course the 5D is full frame. Trust me...once you go full frame you will NEVER dream of going back to a cropped sensor...never. However, the 5D iii uses the same AF system that's in Canon's pro bodies....holy crap on a cracker....it's like the 7D and 5D had a baby. Probably I'll sell off both and move to the iii later next year.
Interesting side note...they used the 5D Mark ii to shoot the entire season finale of House last year. Video quality is through the roof.0 -
I want a good camera for my birthday. I currently live on a beautiful tropical island and it deserves praise. I would like something takes pictures underwater but is clear and sharp indoors too. Action photos should not come out blurry. My price range is not in the thousands folks.
Actually I'm torn between an underwater camera and trying an DSLR camera.0 -

I would go as far as to say it's the best camera in the world right now. Nothing comes close for a perfect storm of image quality and portability. Plus it's black and sleek and sexy. :happy:0 -

Actually my no 1 reason for wanting a 5D or 7D was the video quality. I remember checking out test footage when it came out and being absolutely floored. You can't get that 24 fps cinematic look without going into the tens of thousands $ with actual video cameras. I just wish they'd improve the sound capture quality too, but it's great for stuff you'll be dubbing over with music and such.
I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow my aunt's old 300D and go to the zoo with it last year. I didn't know what I was doing and I ended up shooting with the zoom lens on 300mm handheld lol. Apparently I have a steady hand though, because some of them came out pretty nice. I posted a few here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10775540 -
I have a Canon t3i, I'm jealooooous of the 5D that you've got. I've been wanting one forever, but it's out of my price range. It has absolutely stunning video.0

I have my eyes on the Kodak Z5120 that just came out in the last month or so... 16MP and 25x optical zoom.. I havent gotten into the major photography yet with the canon's and nikon's.0

Old sDSLR user here. Canon 300D. I have no reason to upgrade just yet. I do miss using my AE-1 SLR. 1980s Canons...those were cameras.0

I have camera envy. I have a Canon Rebel T1i that I picked up last March...so far only have the kit lens and just bought a 50 mm 1.8 lens from another concert photographer...I still need a telephoto...and need to learn what the heck I'm doing! LOL0

Amen! I'll give witness to that! I'm not religious except when it comes to the Canon/Nikon debate, then I'm a devout Canon guy!
Maybe you could tell us about lighting techniques to make folks look skinny! :-)0 -
I have a 5d mark II and every lens that Canon makes, Speed lights and studio flash, and a bunch of other crap. I was pro for 7 years and loved it. My fav subjects are people. I still shoot for money occasionally when asked, but I prefer to be free of commitment and obligation.
I sold off most my stuff including MF gear and multiple Pro Canon bodies. But, love the art and keep up with the good artists out there that I know of.0 -

The trick to making people look skinny happens in Photoshop. It's so subtle, people don't even know, but drops about 5 or 10 lbs. lol.0 -
I have a Canon 20D that has been great for the past 8 years. I like the 60D but at this time, I really don't have a real reason to upgrade. Then again, I said that about my Pentax K1000 when I was a teen up until I replaced it with a Canon AE-1. Then there was the Minolta X-700. I also thought I would never get rid of my Nikon F3 or Canon EOS A2. I have been all over the board with camera's and changed them often.
Then came the the 20D. It has been one of the best all-around cameras I have ever owned.0 -

I got my first taste of fast primes a few years ago....yea, that was unfortunate...lol. I've got quite a few L lenses and have just recently starting 'shooting like a grown up' in raw and learned to love Lightroom. I came very close to going into photojournalism and touched base with people like James Nachtway, etc....war photography was where I was headed...but then I got my first real experience covering a plane crash. Got some recognition and decided...F this. I don't want to have to go to work and cover tragedy after tragedy. No thanks. I will shoot a wedding occasionally or just for fun for friends, but I don't ever want to be in a position where I HAVE to pick up the camera. I love it too much and don't want to be robbed of the joy it brings me.0 -

I'm going to start looking into video this year. You're right regarding audio pickup..but I think that would just require you to have to pair the camera with some mics, etc. I'm excited to jump into this arena. The quality of the video this thing can produce at this price point is just absurd.0 -

Pick up a DSRL with underwater kit. I'm telling you...once you cross the line to DSLRland you'll never come back. It's awesome. Also, if you buy a used body/UW kit it won't cost you an arm and a leg.
Out of curiosity where do you live and how'd you end up there?0 -
I'm seriously an amateur and an oddball. I got a Sony a33 with a Sigma 180mm macro and a Sony 3.5-6.3/18-250. Love macro and landscape but I really want to get a really good portrait lens. Still learning a bunch (part of why I came here). I'm also a Paint Shop Pro user... debating on switching over to Photoshop though.0

I am just making the transition from "point & pray" to a Nikon D3000. It's really tough learning all the techincal stuff, but what perplexes me is the way I don't seem to "see" myself into the picture frame. With my low-tech cameras, I can just use the fake telephoto lens & it brings everything closer and in focus at the same time. I don't understand why the shots I am taking with the Nikon seem so "impersonal" and like there is no "me" in them, like I am not interested in what I am shooting.... Would LOVE some advice from all of you!0

Amen!! I want your camera! My little Nikon has been a great camera but it's no canon. Someday when I can justify it more I'll upgrade.
Anyone else miss film sometimes? I miss the darkroom quite often. Ive been toying with the idea of setting one up. I'm not sure how easy a task that would be anymore.
Anyways - your trip sounds amazing. Enjoy and post lots of pics for us photog-geeks.0 -
I tried to use Lightroom, but didn't really care for it. I still got better results using Elements. Don't get me wrong, Lightroom is a really powerful program, I just didn't need that amount of tweaking. I currently shoot with a Nikon D90 & my favorite lens is my ancient 35-105 f2.8 82mm dia Tamron. It's really incredible. I'll stick with Nikon, it's what I've used for years and LOVE 'em.

If you're thinking about going to photoshop...consider going to adobe photoshop lightroom (it's complete and proper name) instead. it can do MOST of what you want to do. i'm telling you...if you get good at lightroom you'll take your photography WAAAAY to the next level.
//edit...it's also a LOT cheaper. now if you can find out how to download the instructional videos for lightrom someplace from a company called lynda....you will be a freakin' lightroom jedi inside two weeks. you will not believe the kind of photos you'll produce. this is of course providing you have a camera that shoots in raw, i should add.0 -
We have a lot of students who use Photoshop but like Lightroom just as much. I find it easier to user myself0

Yea, I use both...and Photoshop is more robust..BUT..Lightroom will do about ninety percent of what you need done (maybe more). It's made for photographers in mind. Plus...if you're taking 30-300 photo...it's designed with 'workflow' in mind. Who wants to individually process 100 photos one a time?0 -

Yeah, true to a point. But, there really is no replacement for photoshop. You can do a lot with Lightroom. It took me a long time to adjust. But, once I did, I do most everything in Lightroom now. However, when it goes to print, I run every single image through Photoshop for fine tuning. You can't do fine retouching, as an example, in lightroom. Unless they've fixed that. But, in the version I have, you can't. I think i have 3.x and Photoshop CS5. I like Lightroom for proofing and rough editing. But, when it gets into detail, I like photoshop.0 -

Agreed. Photoshop is needed for the heavy lifting/fine tuning, but I'm astounded at how capable LR is at times. You still shoot?0 -
I've been looking into getting more into photography but just seeing this thread reminds me I have a lot of reading to do before I can even undertsand half of this thread.0
