wow i didn't know that it made a difference when you took your meds... my dr never said anything to me about it....i know on my bottle it only says take before breakfast that's it.. I have a BAD habit of forgetting to take my pill at the same time each day, i will get up and forget instantly.... there is no way i could wait 1 hr to eat after taking my meds, i'd be on the floor passed out! i normally have to eat within 30 min of getting up... so if i CAN remember to take it as soon as i wake up then i will be ok, and eat 30 min after...

so what can anyone tell me about the difference between synthroid and armour. I have been having lots of symptoms and i had my blood tested and she said that i am in the normal range " of course"... and there isn't much room to mess with my meds or I'll be getting too much.. so what is one to do? how can i get rid of all my symptoms?? i thought of asking her to try a different type of med but wan'\t sure what the real difference is

My doctor never told me about how to take my pills either, which is how I wound up in trouble last year. I always take all medication first thing when I get up in the morning, then my commute takes an hour, so that wasn't my problem. My problem was when I thought "Hey, I should finally start taking that multi-vitamin like they're always telling me to!" And I did, like a good girl, along with all my other pills in the morning. Only no one had told me that you shouldn't take things with iron or calcium in them within 4 hours of taking your thyroid med. So when I finally had my next doc appointment 6 months later, I was DANGEROUSLY hypo.

So yeah, when and how you take it makes a huge difference, and the doctors don't always tell you everything you need to know.

As for synhtroid vs. armour, I can't say as I've only ever had synthroid.

thx. i did know about not taking other meds with my thyroid meds, that's a good thing but i never knew it made a difference when i took it? I will try to take it 1st thing before i get out of bed ( leave it on my nightstand) and then take my B.C, etc a hr later just before i eat... hopefully i won't forget to take them...

anyone else able to help me with the difference between synthroid and armour?

I've taken both Synthroid and Armour Thyroid. I FINALLY got a doctor willing to give me a script for Armour Thyroid last year. It works so much better for me! I had some crappy side effects with the Synthroid. I hated taking it. I'm much happier on the Armour!

    I'd recommend reading:

Do you all go with the calorie recommendations from the various calculators and MFP recommendations or do you adjust b/c of your thyroid condition? I know the right answer is to go with whatever works for your body, but I am having a hard time finding that sweet spot. Seems nothing works for my body!

yeah, me too. I went to fit to fat to calculate my bf%, then calculated basal metabolism there. I use that number for my goal, because I was told that by my doctor to subtract 200 cal/day for being hypothyroid. I eat some of my exercise cals if I am hungry, and try to carb/cal cycle so that my body doesn't get stuck. Still weight loss is very slow. Now, I am trying HIIT to see if I lose some fat. Good luck to all on your journey.

    Hi

Yes, i'm hypo too and was diagnosed in 2006.
After getting my levels of medication right over the first few months I have been on 100mcg Levothyroxine ever since. my weight dropped at first by around 14lbs just by starting on the medication but I made no real effort to continue the weight loss and just stalled for the remaining years....
This Christmas I weighed in at 170 - i'd started going up again!!

This gave me the kick I needed to change my lifestyle once and for all. Since new years I have lost 19lbs, i'm not great with exercise so I can't really put it down to that and I don't really cut down drastically on carbs.

I eat a lot of protein rich foods and when I do go for carbs I try for brown/wholemeal bread/rice/pasta. Other than that it's just keep moving, keep an eye on salt and sugar intake and try eat as much fresh food as poss.

Seems to be working for me!

If any of you would like to add me, please feel free! I have an open diary so that can sometimes help with food ideas?

    Kristie

i was recently diagnosed too and am on the smallest dose of the syntho med...my dr "stressed" to me the importance of taking it on an empty stomach and about an hour before i eat....it is a pain, but i just set my clock for 4:30 every.single.day and keep a bottle of water by the bed and take the pill and then get up an hour later during the week and then whatever time on weekends but i always take my pill at 4:30. i just had my blood tested this week to see where i am, but haven't heard yet.

i have not heard about the low carb thing...i'll look into that!

    good luck everyone!

it makes a difference to take your meds properly... soy, calcium, and other things including coffee sugars ect can counteract your synthroid (or whatever version you take) best to take your meds an hour before eating or drinking anything (excluding water of course) To get as much t4 absorption as possible is pretty key... otherwise your levels will bounce around

Really??... I have never heard this before?... My doctor never told me anything on HOW to to be taking my nature throid.... If you have coffee firth thing in teh morning and wantt o wait and take your meds later.... How long would you have to wait to get full absorbsion?...

I got my info from the pharmacy insert. It says to take an hour before food and wait four hours before taking any minerals... so don't take multivitamins in the morning or it will inhibit absorption of meds.

the thyroid diet book did not impress me either... a lot of stuff in there was so generalized on regular dieting.

i cannot stress how important it is to get a good endo... not a pcp ... an endo. one that aimes for your 'right' levels! you should be having regular labs and adjustments all the time. since i have hashimoto's disease i have to adjust a lot!! and my thyroid always acts up and jumps up but my doc is amazing and ups my dose before it even jumps. i am from montana and healthcare isnt' as varied as most states. i did my research and found the 'right' doctors, granted i have to travel to my apt's but its soo worth it.

thx for that great article! what kind of side effects did you get with synthroid?

On the Synthroid I got a choking feeling all the time and a build up of tissue over my thyroid. Also, low libido and no real relief from symptoms. The Armour Thyroid took care of all that.

I to suffer from hypothyroid and last year was a nightmare, finally seem to be medicated right, but it has to be checked monthly to keep me on the right meds......but now I have to switch doctors so I'm a little worried my new doctor won't keep on top of it. I get tired of people saying, because I have a lot of weight to lose I can lose weight easier than others.....which isn't true and due to my many health issues I actually have it harder than some others. I didn't get a chance to read all the posts, so I will return later and check out the other posts on this.

    Thanks,
    Sherry

I was diagnosed May 2010. Since then I have lost whatever is on the ticker there. I plateaued for about a year after an initial loss, then gained back 25 and had the get my meds adjusted.

Back on track using Body by Vi/Visalus. 21.2 lbs since March 5.

After doing research and talking to my doctor, apparently Soy is something we should avoid if taking hypo meds...works against the meds...might be something you want to look into further since BBVi is soy protein.
