Pretty much all I have to say on the issue.

Oh so you don't like the genocide in Darfur, Rwanda, or any other country? Tell me how that directly affects your life.

Just because it doesn't directly affect your life, doesn't mean it is okay. And that's all I have to say about that. :)

Damn, that's a much better example than my Snooki reference...

But, I feel like if you tell someone they can't marry (yes, marry, not civil union, etc...) then it is just like when we classified blacks as property.

Ehhh........ really? Not being able to get married is "just like" being forced into servitude because you are not considered fully human? If anything, marriage is much closer to slavery than being single

^This is literally one of the most ignorant and disgusting things I have ever read. How can you even BEGIN to compare those things? It's mind-boggling.

Totally screenshotted this though so I can put it all over the internet and rant about how retarded it is.

I'll probably get a warning from a mod for this, and I don't even care, I'm so upset right now.

Also, sorry OP but I'm thinking your thread's gonna get closed :P

It isn't! That's why we're trying to get all those who wanted to post their opinions earlier to bring it to the place where it's appropriate.

you issue is in thinking they want to have a healthy debate... many of them don't.. .they simply want to quote bible verses at you and arbitrarily dismiss anything you say

I think generations from now people will be embarrassed to find out their ancestors supported discrimination such as denying some people the right to get legally married, just how people today feel about ancestors who supported slavery, fought against women voting, and segregation. I want to make my future great grandchildren proud!

Re: the people who quote the bible as reasoning for this...How would you feel if I imposed the Koran or the book of Mormon or the Book of Maureen (that's my bible) on you? Wouldn't like it, eh?

Am I totally misunderstanding this? If so that's embarassing :P

My understanding was that she was saying even though gay marriage doesn't affect her personally, it's still wrong, just like the genocide in Darfur. I'm sorry but comparing gay marriage to genocide in ANY sense is just unacceptable to me.

I'm pretty sure she was saying that even if something doesn't affect you directly, it can still be morally reasonable to take a stance against it. For example, genocide in Africa doesn't really impact people in Canada, but I would suspect most Canadians are against genocide... except for maybe those in Quebec... they're a little weird...

    lol @ Quebec.

Anyway yes, I understand that. However, she could've used an example other than freaking genocide. I realize that she wasn't saying gay marriage and genocide are the same, but by using genocide as her example she WAS comparing the two, however indirectly. I find that incredibly offensive, as would anyone who is homosexual (I'm straight but I have several gay friends and can't help but put myself in their shoes).

Hmm did you actually just equate murder and genocide to two dudes loving each other and wanting to have the same rights as straite people who love each other??

I think everyone posting on this genocide vs. gay marriage misunderstanding is on the same side of the issue in question...which is gay marriage being legalized.

Take a xanax and and come back and reread this in a half hour.

I honestly don't care if two men or two women want to marry. For the longest time I was on the fence about it and couldn't understand the issue until I found out that domestic partners have no say in what happens to their SO medical wise. I really had no idea about that.

Another thing I learned: Civil union isn't exactly the same as marriage. If you entered into a civil union you can't check "Married" on forms (a gay friend told me this), although how they would ever find out it was a civil union vs a "true" marriage is beyond me.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong and giving her too much benefit of the doubt... I just assumed she was in favor of gay marriage but was merely making the point that you can be against something that doesn't directly affect you. Now that I have read her post again, maybe I'm wrong....

Yeah, the fact that she said "doesn't mean it's okay" is what lead me to believe that she doesn't think gay marriage is okay, but I guess we can't be 100% sure of that.

Just because INJUSTICE doesn't directly affect your life, doesn't mean it is okay. And that's all I have to say about that. :)
