My MIL was famous for her expresso. She just had a regular "caffettiera". If you look up Bialetti moka caffettiera, you'll see what the majority of the Italians use at home.

The quality of expresso depends on several factors--the quality of the cafe' (the higher the percentage of Arabic, the better)--the strength of the person pressing the cafe' into the machine--and the water quality. Naples is famous for the quality of it's expresso. We have a famous coffee producer right across the street from us. They sell coffee to bars and to the public. The owner once told my husband that the quality of an expresso can be told by the after taste--if it's bitter, the caffe' is no good.
