Let's talk about egg yolks...

Someone recently mentioned to me that when they boiled a lot of eggs they peeled them all and took out all the yolks. I asked why, and the only response I got was "every body builder and personal trainer I know has told me to not eat the yolk."
To you all out there in MFP land, what is your opinion of egg yolks? For or against? What is your reasoning for having such a negative or positive attitude toward egg yolks?

I eat fried, scrambled, boiled, poached, etc eggs every morning and I eat 4-6 eggs a day.
Egg yolks are the most nutritious part of the egg.0 -
I eat the yolks as well. Sometimes I just do a egg white omelette. But I love yolks too.0

It's just a numbers game
Bodybuilders only do that in order to reach protein macro goals while keeping their fat macro goal
Eat the yolk0 -

^^Same here0 -
A lot of people rant on about the cholesterol in egg yolk but it's not the same Type of cholesterol that gives you heart disease. I lowered my cholesterol and probably startedeating more eggs but less fatty stuff.0
-
I eat the entire egg....and usually more than one0
-
I wouldnt even eat the egg without the yolk. If I wanted pure protein that badly I'd have a protein shake0
-
The yolk is what makes the egg, but it is also where all the fat and protein are. But I believe it's the good fat, so in moderation, I think it's just fine. You will see a big calorie difference between eggs with or without the yolk. I ate a hard boiled egg the other day without the yolk, and it was weird. I wouldn't recomend it.0

No eggs without yolks here either! It seems a waste to throw away the most nutritious part of the egg and it makes a 1000x tastier omelette!!0
-
Usually I eat the entire egg boiled sometimes I take the egg yolk out because I'm trying to lower calories for the day0
-
All the good stuff is in the yolk, so I eat the whole egg. I usually eat several eggs a day, and I'm losing weight and my cholesterol is always perfect when I have it checked (yearly).0

He said that probably with the idea that bodybuilder might eat a dozen egg whites at a meal.
If that included the yolks, that would not be so great.
Yolks do have the most nutrition, but also the most cholesterol, so I give yolks to the pooch.0 -
an egg yolk is not going to kill you. I usually eat 1 egg and 1 egg with out the yolk for my breakfast but it's mostly t save on calories and get some extra protein.0
-
The yolk is the best part! it's what makes my toast soggy :-)0
-
I love yolks. They are the most nutritious part of an egg. Eating 12 yolks is probably not a good idea but one or two won't hurt and are actually good for you. Dietary cholesterol does not have a huge implact on blood cholesterol. The biggest influence on your blood cholesterol from your diet is the type of dietary fats and carbohydrates you are ingesting. The fat in yolks is about 50% monounsaturated (the type you want to have a lot of)!0

I wouldn't eat an egg without the yolk.0

Do I need to say anymore?
I eat all the egg now after being anti-yolk for cholesterol issues. About 2 weeks ago common sense made me go "This is something that would CREATE a creature, odds are pretty good it has some solid value to my body..." So I stopped really separating it out, then I saw this article yesterday.0 -

I think you misunderstand egg a little bit... The protein is in the egg white(great majority). I'd also argue against the whole good fat statement. The only issue I have with the fats is the O6 v O3 imbalance, but fish fixes that.0 -
since i have been trying to eat healthier i have been eating more eggs 4-8 per week. whole eggs every time. my BP and Cholesterol are both down, good Cholesterol is up and i have lost 40lbs. now if i were eating a dozen a day i don't think i would eat all the yolks but under normal circumstances eat away. dietary cholesterol is not what makes the body's cholesterol go up for the most part.0
-
As for calorie difference... I don't think this is nearly as big of a deal as it is made out to be. 1 cup of egg v 1 cup of egg white, only like 100 calorie difference. And I am skeptical people are eating that much egg in their day unless they are egg people or are eating them with a purpose.0

Actually, protein is pretty evenly split between the yolk and the white. Fat is irrelevant, buy decent eggs and you get a good O6:O3 ratio out of them. All of the nutritents in the egg are in the yolk. Eating an egg white nets you a few grams of protein, and no other nutrition. Complete waste of time and food to not eat the yolk.0 -

This. Buy local eggs from pastured hens, if you can. The omega ratio in conventional eggs is horribly out of balance. Not so of pastured eggs!0 -
Thanks all. When he told that he boiled 2 dozen eggs and took out all the yolks my head just about exploded. I tried explain the theory that body builders use the whites to increase protein while staying low on fat, but I wondered if I was missing something.
I do use egg whites for some things that I cook, but I won't eat a boiled egg without the yolk. It just tastes funky to me.
We are still working on the concept of "everything in moderation"0 -

This is what I do too. I love the yolks but, for me, its all about making the numbers work. I can fit one whole egg and an extra white or two into my log better than 2-3 whole eggs. I like to make boiled eggs with soft yolks then I can take the one yolk and spread it over all of the whites0 -
I'm against them because i can't stand the texture that the yolk has. I think they're healthy, but I think they're gross.0

This! Also, eggs are only about 70 calories each!!?? Why eliminate a low calories source of dense nutrition!!???0 -
Eggs are almost the perfect food! I eat the whole thing. We raise organic chickens and have organic brown yummy eggs.0
-
Depends on my mood, not health reasons. I usually always eat the yolk if they're pan cooked, but when it comes to boiled, I take them out because I don't like the flavor or texture.0
-
I eat 1 whole egg then 2 egg whites almost every morning.
The yolk has vitamin B12 and D in it.0 -
I eat the yolks. I don't eat much meat or anything else really loaded in cholesterol so i'm not worried about that. And I eat 1-2 eggs at a time. Also my main view point on not eating the yolk, is it's wasteful. I try my hardest not to waste any food at all. I can't see the point of simply throwing the yolk away. It's perfectly edible and nutritious.0
