the reasons those bodybuilders take out the yolks is because it doesnt fit their macros, and egg protein has a absorbtion rate value to the body.. i always eat whole eggs because the egg fat is extremely nutrient dense and is great for you.
  • I say eat the yolk. It has the most in it. If you are going to benefit from it, eat the yolk.

At a time when so many people are struggling with money and when society is wasting so much food it galls me somewhat to know that some people are wasting half of every egg they eat.

I buy eggbeaters. Then I don't have to throw out the yolk. I don't eat the whole egg because I don't like eggs for the most part and because there are too many calories for that little bit of protein. With the eggbeaters the calories are half and I can eat enough to make my 20 gram goal for breakfast. I only eat them when I am sick of shakes as like I said, I don't care for eggs and am stingy with my calories.

I read this thread while eating four eggs including the yolks - delicious

Very rarely I might make an egg white + green veggies omlette, if I'm hungry and want to be careful to keep the calories very low. But that is very rare. And if I do that I give the yolks to the kids, I don't waste them.

When I eat yolks, I honestly have to force myself to eat them just because they're good for me. I've never liked the smell, taste, or texture of them.

I ate egg whites only for a few years because of the cholesterol fear. Then I did some research and decided to give up egg whites and just eat the whole egg. I buy local farm raised eggs to get the most nutrition I can. My cholesterol is the lowest it has ever been. Nom nom, love eggs.

I eat the whole thing, made an egg white omlette once to save on calories, was tasteless and pointless. X

I eat a lot of eggs!!! Both egg whites and hard boiled eggs with the yolk. Eating up to 2 whole eggs a day is perfectly ok as long as your cholesterol is in a healthy range.

I eat one or two yolks whenever I make egg scrambles along with extra whites. It's such a waste of nutrients and flavor to throw them out. I think as long as somebody is not getting carried away and eating too many everyday then it is fine.

Current advice (in UK at least) is that whole eggs can be eaten without restriction unless advised by your doctor. Research shows that ingested dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Egg yolks are also one of our few sources of dietary vitamin D.

Someone recently mentioned to me that when they boiled a lot of eggs they peeled them all and took out all the yolks. I asked why, and the only response I got was "every body builder and personal trainer I know has told me to not eat the yolk."

To you all out there in MFP land, what is your opinion of egg yolks? For or against? What is your reasoning for having such a negative or positive attitude toward egg yolks?

The vast majority of the goodness is actually in the yolk.

I eat the whole egg, two or more per day, they are an excellent food.

I don't want to waste the yolk! If there were a way to save the yolk and then just use it later (in creme brulee or something similar, perhaps?) I might consider it. But that's a lot of work, too, so I just eat the whole egg, and eat slightly fewer of them (though I've been known to eat two a day and had no problems or raised cholesterol ever).

Do I need to say anymore?

I eat all the egg now after being anti-yolk for cholesterol issues. About 2 weeks ago common sense made me go "This is something that would CREATE a creature, odds are pretty good it has some solid value to my body..." So I stopped really separating it out, then I saw this article yesterday.

    Wow great article!!

Just going to copy and paste one of its paragraphs as I consider this particular bit of info extremely important:

Lecithin, a substance found in the egg yolk, might increase HDL cholesterol. “Lecithin helps remove cholesterol from tissue and transport it to the liver, so it doesn’t build up in blood vessels,” says study coauthor Maria Luz Fernandez, Ph.D., a nutrition professor at the University of Connecticut.

LOVE egg yolks. I've never taken them out and they certainly didn't prevent me from losing 75lbs and I used to eat loads of eggs when I lived at home on my parents farm. I still do, farm fresh for life :D

Don't eat carbs, they turn to sugar and it makes you fat.

Eating fat is good for you, it isn't bad for you.

Dietary cholesterol is good and eating more is not harmful (so you can eat a whole egg).

Excess amounts of protein isn't harmful.

So this diet "war," or whatever you want to call it involves people drawing a line in the sand or to champion moderation. I would say that when finding your dietary lifestyle, you start with nutrition and then "clean" sources of energy (calories).

Would you eat something that can harm you? I trust the answer is that you won't. We still do not know if eating eggs is good or bad, but we know there is a lot of cholesterol in eggs, second only to brains. We know that our body creates essential cholesterol and if our body is deficient in it, then we need to consume dietary cholesterol. If you don't need to consume cholesterol, does excess cholesterol affect cardio vascular disease? I would say generally speaking, it can't be healthy for you, especially if you are overweight or obese.

Some doctors say that egg consumption (1 egg) exceeds Daily Recommended Amount (for cholesterol), but again, I would say that statement applies to a percentage of people.

So, the answer is a moving target and depends on who you are talking about.

This is only part of the story. Take a look at the micronutrient profile of both also. The above is an oversimplification of the benefits and/ drawbacks of each. There is a nice easy to read comparison here:

If you just want protein why not eat whey protein powder or similar, rather than throw away the more nutritious part of an egg?

Well I have two whole eggs and an orange or apple for breakfast much of the time - total calories 220. I do not consider that a large amount of calories, plus it keeps me full until lunch.
