Went to market and bought alot of healthy and decent food!
The only problem is when it comes to night time and weekends I find myself "snacking" on 5-600 calories over my daily budget EVERYDAY. I'm fine in the morning and afternoon because of work and whatever but once I get off work or it's the weekend I turn into a vacuum cleaner. Yogurt here, 2 bananas there, 100 calorie rice cakes over there, another yogurt, some raisin toast, maybe an apple or 4.
I get done from practice or my games and I just eat and eat and eat and eat and i've hit a bump in the road (after getting over my plateau) and have 0 idea how to stop eating all this ****. I know "just don't eat it" or "don't buy it then" Would be some pretty logical and "puggy your a retard" answers but as far as my legit question goes....
What do you guys do when you get bad cravings? Does gum help? Sunflower seeds? Drinking water til you wanna puke?
Any useful advice, incentives, trolling or jeering is acceptable.

Water, and water, and some more water, then after that I have some more water...... :bigsmile:0

I know how you feel, I buy healthy options but pigging out on junk food would probably be the amount of calories in the end.0

So what you are really trying to say is....?0 -
Miso soup or barley salad
Either will kill my appetite.
When I get the late night snacking urge, I know if I eat high sugar carbs (ie ring-dings) , it will just make me want more.
So I drink a glass of milk and eat a small handful of almonds.
Those are my tricks.0 -
Ugh I've been doing the same thing =/
On nights I successfully don't stuff my face I find that herbal tea or iced water with lemon helps.0 -
Used to have the same problem and still do upto a certain degree. What helped was (like mentioned above) drink more and more water.
Keep fruits around for when you want to have a late night snack or if you want something savory a piece of cheese.
Alot of times we go for late night snacking because we didn't really ate enough during the day so maybe see if you're eating enough?
I now like to reserve 150 calories per day in my diary for late night Ovaltine + 1% milk. So yummy and it fixes my chocolate cravings + late night snacking desire0 -
I have the same problem with quasi- "grazing". I have been eating Progresso light soups. ~140 calories in a can. Pretty filling and taste good. I will also eat a bunch of cooked califlower with a little cheese. Sugar free banana popsicles (15 calories each).
Good luck. Will be checking back for other suggestions.0 -
Do you know WHY you are eating???
you "get done with practice or a game" and just eat, eat, eat....
Are you bored, hungry, agitated what? Are you craving something specific but then filling that craving with A LOT of healthy food? It may serve you better to
a) figure out why you are eating and
b)if it is craving something specific (hot dog, burger, ice cream) either give yourself a little (not the whole container of ice cream) or find a lower calorie but still yummy alternative! "Recipie" forums are good for that!!
Good Luck!!0 -

I don't snack because i DRINK WATER.... Like a crap load of water.... :grumble:0 -
I'm usually putting in decent calorie counts during the day
7am breakfast 3-400 calo
11 am lunch - 5-700 cal
2am snack - 1-200 cal
4pm snack - 1-200 cal
6pm dinner - 5-700 cal
snack - 349654640893490 cal
So i'm not neglecting my calories, and i'm eating back some of the ones I gain from my games and stuff but I just go complete nuts0 -
I do the same thing (less often now than 12 months ago). I am a "bored eater." If I have too much down time, I EAT. Even after 12 months of counting calories and adding 4 intense cardio days per week, I still fall into old habits sometimes.
The key for me is to find healthy options that provide the SAME SATISFACTION. I have also started to notice that if I pick foods that take longer to consume, I will eat less. Eating popcorn a few pieces at a time, instead of handfuls
Chips> Low cal popcorn, sugar snap peas
Ice cream> Unsweetened applesauce
Sweet treats> Frozen fuit
Soda> Crystal light
Also, if you have an active exercise routine-- protein powder. 1 scoop of Strawberry/banana with OJ and I am full for hours!0 -

Also, if you have an active exercise routine-- protein powder. 1 scoop of Strawberry/banana with OJ and I am full for hours!
That is also a problem because I do not drink any type of soda, don't eat ice cream, I only eat chips (1 serving) when I choose a sandwich for lunch and hardly ever eat candy, maybe valentines day, easter, and halloween. The strawberry/banana/OJ thing I can get down with I make those before my games religiously.
I am choosing healthy options but 900 calories in 10 minutes at 11pm of fruit and yogurt and peanut butter seems to be hurting me.0 -
I have 1 piece of peanut butter toast. always fills me up, not the best low calorie snack, but it works0

I kind of gave up trying to fight off the late night snacking. I could easily down 1200 calories in 10 minutes at midnight. Thankfully, I've cut it down to a couple/few hundred-but I shaved those off my actual "meals" so I always have a couple/few hundred left after dinner for my snacking. Rice cakes and yogurt don't cut it for me-I'll make a sandwich or something that feels like actual food. If you can fight off the night time snacking-kudos to you. I surrendered and decided I'd just work with that as a mainstay. I kind of graze all day-but shaving 50 calories off each of my "grazings" leaves me a few hundred for my 11pm feeding (which allows me to eat actual food and not rice cakes-no offense to people who think rice cakes are actual food).0

Water helps, but it gets bland.
I make my own lemonade with fresh lemons and stevia (lemons help quinch thirst and stevia helps my sweet tooth)
Hot tea w/ lemon and honey
Gum is always a good idea. I keep a pack in my desk drawer and a pack or two at home.
If I have wiggle room, I like to snack on pretzel sticks ( one at a time)
Also carrot sticks, cucummbers, red peppers are great little snackers.
Good luck.0 -
If you have a graving for something drink a glass of water, and wait about 20 minutes. If you still want it after that then maybe only have half of what your were craving. You are bound to not give in every time if this is the case.0
-
I also find that if I am feeling that way really late at night I just make myself go to sleep.0
-
Air-popped popcorn helps me a lot because I can eat a TON of it before the calories really start to add up. But the real trick, at least for me, was training myself not to think about food all the time. Once I got the idea of a snack in my head, it was inevitable. I actually had to force myself to not think about it. Any time snacking sounded good, I read a book or worked or something else; otherwise, I obsess about the idea and always end up eating more.0
-
I usually go to the gym after work ..... and plan my "extra"calories for the evening ..... plus, I can't sleep on a too-full stomach ......
You could get a list of low-cal stuff, like veggies & a DAB of hummus, to tide you over .....
Good luck !0 -
For me, I come here and read the boards. The craving passes, because time passes. Also - when I can eat that many calories in a short period of time, it's usually because I'm hungry and I don't have the time or desire to WAIT to make something. I do find that keeping less "convenient" food around is helpful, if I have to wash the fruit, or peel the vegetable, I eat less because my hands are busy. Also - I drink coffee, and I tell myself I will let myself have the "whatever" after I make coffee. By the time it is done brewing, and cooled to drink, I want less of whatever I promised myself. Or, find a way to combine a few of the foods together and it will take time to build it. Or, log it first and then let yourself eat it. Basically, for me... time. That is all that really helps with cravings. However, if you are maybe actually hungry, you're going to keep over "snacking".0

try brushing your teeth - not much tastes good with the toothpaste taste in your mouth. My guess is that you're eating because you're bored, not because you're hungry. Maybe get out of the house for a bit and take a walk before eating something?0
-
I have heard the brushing your teeth thing is a decent method to try. i'll have to try it and see if it works out for me, can't hurt to make an attempt, i'd rather taste crest then sweat when I take the garbage out lol0
-
Big Red chewing gum. I have the same problem but if I can stop myself and pop a piece of gum then it takes away that feeling of wanting to eat something... anything... everything.
But the trick is to reach for the gum and NOT the York Pieces that my hubby has in the freezer....0 -
I know if I get bored I'll eat. I just go to bed early if I don't have anything going on.0
-
I try to keep busy and not sit on the couch or in front of the TV0
-
I am usually ravenous when I get home from work. Yesterday in particular, I was so hungry, I popped open a can of tuna and mixed some cottage cheese in, and had it with toast. It was delicious, high protein, and I managed to fit it in my calories for the day. I tried to ignore it but I just had to eat something, so I did.
Something that's helped me is eating something very light or not eating at all before lunch, which is around 2pm-3pm, then I have a lot of calories to spend for the rest of the day. I guess in a way that would be intermittent fasting, but I'm not going by anyone's plans, just trying to find what works for me. So far, so good...0 -
Pre-log everything before you eat it! If you want to snack on yogurt, put it in your log first. Then, when you want to move onto rice cakes, log those before you eat them. Hopefully you will eventually go, "What the heck am I doing?" and stop.0
-
I had this problem the first time I lost weight, the second time I am trying a new approach my trainer suggested. I am eating every 1.5 to 2 hours. So i will break a regular meal into two poritons and eat part of it and then eat the rest in an hour. I get to feel like i am constantly eating throughout the day but not bringing in too much extra food cause i divy up meal calories to snack calories too. I think she really does it to keep the metabolism going but i have found that it seriously helps my grazing.0
-
I plan out my day ahead of time, and I make sure to include some evening snacks. I like to go to bed full (not stuffed), otherwise I can't sleep. So if I build in some evening snacks when I'm planning (I always plan tomorrow's food today), then I can eat, stay within my calories, and go to bed happy.0

Watch your sugar
BOTH sugar and artificial sweeteners increase your appetite.... The more you get the more you want.
I DO have a sweet tooth, so I try really hard to watch out for sugar in *real* foods.
The brand of pasta sauce I was using had 9g sugar per 1/2 cup serving.
My favorite cookies have 9g sugar per 15 cookies. --- I'd rather have the cookies.
I started reading labels and found sauces I liked in the 1-3g sugar per serving range.
I get plain yogurt and add my own flavorings so I can have more control over the sugar content.
Food manufactures love adding sugars, because they are cheap and they make you want more.
HFCS is much sweeter than regular sugar AND food manufacturers use MORE of it. (Huh?)0
