In your search don't discount the Hyundai and Kia. My boyfriend just spent a month car shopping for a sedan style car with a $ limit. We drove almost every make and model within that price range. It came down to value for performance and the Sonata won. He had found a 2011 with a manual trans that he loved, but by the time he had done his due diligence it was sold. We then spent a week searching for a 2012 with a manual trans, located it out of state and talked a local dealer into having it transferred. Fantastic deal (no one wanted the manual trans), .9% financing, awesome warranty, comfortable ride and really fun to drive (same get up and go as the Honda Civic SI Sport).

I'm very impressed with Hyundai and Kia lately, but alas they are FWD, excepting the Genesis and Equus.

I can actually squeeze in an S4. So many choices! lol

  • But if you're in SoCal and never go to the mountains/off-raoding, owning AWD or 4x4 is just stupid...your MPG drops.

Not true. AWD is not for snow/mountains/off-road only. I'm not talking about the wimpy AWD systems that run as FWD until slippage is detected then activates a clutch pack to push some power to the rear. Those try to get the job done but are unsatisfying and in being reactive are a little late to the party. I mean full-time torsen-based center differentials with default 50/50 or 40(fr)/60(r) torque split. It makes a huge difference in dry as well as wet conditions.

It is a tool that magically stops expletives from flying out of my mouth in many situations where FWD and to a lesser extent RWD would let the words fly.

Mileage penalty exists but to me is immaterial.

Not sure yet what I'd suggest.
  • Unsure of prices over in the states but in the UK I currently have a Nissan 350z which is muchos fun, Id suggest test driving one of those or a 370z if your budget will allow.

    Or something RWD with a V8 ;)

I love the cars. I still have my modified B5 S4 and enjoy driving it to work from time to time and a road coarse track event from time to time. I still love that car.

I had a B6 S4 for 3 years. I loved it too but for slightly different reasons. That damn thing was thirsty! I'd typically get (computer indicated) upper 17s to low 18s mpg on road trips. Daily commuting in mixed driving yielded mid to upper 13s. It was a blast to drive, sounded great. The engine really did shine above 5,000rpms. When bumping against the 7,200 rpm redline in the first 3-4 gears it was music to me.

I have a B8 A4 now with a chipped computer for extra fun. Super comfortable and averages 25-26 mpg on the same daily commute.

I have driven a C-class with 4-motion and it is pretty nice all around.

Actually, I don't know why I didn't think of it before.
    I have a 1937 Chevrolet 4 door with a 327 pulled out of a Camaro.
Mustang II front end (power steering) and cold AC.

    PERFECT car for you.

Yeah, that's definitely a contender. I had a '04 Infiniti G35 Sedan for a while. It's based off the same chassis/engine. It was a great car. I'd just get another, but I want to try something different.

An 2013 Chevy Malibu. Before you go yuk! You should look at the new changes to the body! I love it!

I've liked the Malibu since the redesign in '08. It was a big turning point for Chevy.

I hear good things about that one. Lots of comparisons to the 5 series.

I had a 2000 Impala and it was better than everyone gave it credit for. I got 28 mpg and 0-60 in 7 seconds. Pretty good for 2000, and you could probably fit a horse in the trunk.

Mercedes are just awesome in general. The '99 has survived my mom's (terrible) driving for 10 years,me learning how to drive and still drives wonderful.

Smart Car. - got one a couple of years ago. the gas mileage rocks (38 mpg in town, 36 with the top down), its convertible and has eyelashes now so its down right cute. it holds more then you expect, is also roomier then you expect and has more pep then you think. Insurance on it is $70ish a month full coverage and it is RWD. Hard tops rought 14k convertibles about 17k

*and for those of you about to talk s***, it allows us to be able to afford to drive the pick up and the old school charger.

07 VW Touraeg! LOVE my baby and the certified pre-owned gets you a warrant!

Dang, it seems like there was something that knocked that one off my list a while back, but now I can't think of what it is.

Probably the VW's earned reputation for electrical problems - I own an '08 Jetta and believe me, you don't want the headaches!

When I lived in Europe we drove a Ford Scorpio. LOVED IT. Was great in the snow and comfortable lots of room and nice features. Not sure the cost of it. It was a company car so we didn't have to worry about any of that.

2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I think it was the only year that it was made and it uses Mercedes Benz's 3.0L engine.

That's a good point. The torque would be much appreciated.

    That's a good one.

I have a 2010 Subaru Impreza, handels amazingly, good MPG, and a surprising amount of room. My BF says it is like driving a race car.
