Help with dry, frizzy, curly hair?

I've been dealing with my terrible hair for years!! Its dry, half curly half wavey, and frizzy. Its long (a few inches from my elbow, not willing to cut lol). I color it every few months or so. I think thats enough background information lol.
For girls in my situation, what's your routine? I don't know how to take care of my crazy hair.
Also, what products do you use? Shampoo, conditioner, etc?
The most detail the better since I'm completely lost :ohwell:

I second this request, even though I'm a guy- when my hair gets long I don't know what do do with it haha0

moroccan oil rubbed through your hair after a shower0

I use diva curl products. When I can't afford those, I use garnier fructis products, especially their conditioning gel. It really helps with my dry, frizzy hair. I use that with pantene pro-v curl gel and it makes my hair soft and curly, not sticky or stiff. If you can find deva curl products though, I highly recommend those. They are created by Lorraine Massey, a "curly hair specialist".0

Well for starters, the frequent colouring is definitely damaging your hair. It's okay if it's long but do you trim it regularly? You probably have split ends if you don't. Also, don't blow dry your hair often, try naturally drying it. Do you use products often? The chemicals are best to avoid.
As for conditioners, use one specifically designed for dry hair and use it on your hair, not scalp. As for the shampoo, only focus it on your scalp. If you have the money then go for salon shampoos and conditioners, do not use the normal ones you find in supermarkets.
Also try using natural leave-in conditioners such as coconut oil and leave it on for at least half an hour before washing it off.
Last but not least... funny but diet does affect your hair's condition too. Make sure you are getting enough nutrients in your diet. If you were previously eating foods with lack of nutrients and then your diet improves, so will your hair.
Good luck!0 -
Hair One (generic version of Wen) from Sally's for curly hair makes my frizzy curls more manageable. And layers help a lot.0

I use coconut oil in my hair like it's conditioner. If you use a straightener or anything be sure to use a protective cream to prevent damage.0

I shampoo around 2 times a week and use conditioner daily. I am using Tresemme for curly hair. I comb my hair only when I have conditioner in it. If I comb my hair out of the shower it dries frizzy no matter how much product I use.
Products I use in order:
Garnier Fructis curl scrunch gel extra strong
tresemme climate control (humidity and curly hair do not mix!)
John Frieda frizz-ease dream curls spray
This does pretty good even when I drive down the interstate with the windows down.0 -
So I usually use pantene shampoo & conditioner for dry hair. Comb hair in the shower. The after I get out of shower, do not comb or brush your hair. Put Brocato CurlKarma Curl Energizing Cream throughout and scrunch. Then use a blowdryer with a diffuser on low and continue to grab bunches of hair and pile on diffuser, until its almost dry. Scrunching all the time. I've also followed all of the above except instead of cream, I use John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls perfecting spray. Spray tons of it on and scrunch and let air dry.
Maybe it will work for you.0 -

If you can afford them, Wen products are terrific! I also recommend a product by FX called Curls Up. I apply it to my hair wet, and dry it with a diffuser.0 -
I swap out shampoos and conditioners all the time. But what I absolutely LOVE is TIGI Catwalk mousse. I have curly hair that likes to get curlier in some spots and not so curly in other spots. I usually just wash my hair, put in the mousse and go. I havent blow dried my hair in years. I love this mousse, when my hair dries I dont have the frizzes and it seems to keep my curly hair in check for the most part. Usually when its in its air drying phase I will kind of shake out my hair a little bit with my fingers then leave it alone. Ive gotten tons of compliments on it since I started using it. I used to be only able to get this product at beauty stores like Ulta or Sally's but my local grocery store and target are now carrying it. I think its around 12bucks, (at target not so long ago they had prepackaged buy1 get 1 free). I find it is well worth it and I always cringe whenever I run out.0

I like the "Aussie Moist shampoo" & the "Aussie's 3 minute miracle" for conditioner.
If you flat iron your hair, try John Freda's "3 Day straight"...it's a wonderful product.
Avoid products that have a lot of "alcohol" base in them, this will dry out your hair & skin.0 -
I have DRY, CURLY, FUSS.....My family is loaded with hair dresser they tryed everything....I've tried it ALLL. NOTHING works...I do use no laurel sulfate hair products they seem to help...I do color but with those products that wash out in a few weeks. I only wash my hair once a week. I do keep my hair longer because it makes it easier to manage when I wear it curly. However, most of the time I keep it ironed. I don't use a brush or comb when wearing it curly I just use my fingers.0

It sounds like you and I have the same hair type. It really sucks in the summer (especially since moving down to Louisiana), so for most of it I throw it into a ponytail, however I do blow-dry my hair every time I shower, even if I'm gonna tie it back. If I don't, it looks -absolutely terrible-. Puffy down at the bottom, flat on top, frizzy all over and wavy, but not the good wavy.
As for products, I don't really do anything fancy. I'm currently trying out Pantene's curls-to-straight line, although I've found that all of the stuff that promises straightening just doesn't work for me. I tried all kinds of Frizz-Ease and Bedhead stuff, and while it sort of helps, my hair kind of just decides how it's gonna be when I leave the house. :P I do use hairspray both before drying and after to hold it for a while but after an hour or so I brush it out.
So I blow-dry after every shower (usually every two days and/or when I work out). I dry it all first quickly and then flip my hair over and straighten it with a big round brush. It takes around 15-20 minutes. It's annoying but I've been doing it since I was 13 so I'm used to it by now.
The other alternative is Japanese hair straightening, which is a dream but also super expensive. It's the only straightening that works on me. It ranged anywhere from $300-600 and lasts about six months. You also need to research which places are good in your area, because if they botch that you could really damage your hair. I do it when I can but I'm broke atm so it's back to blow drying this summer!
Hope any of this helps. Good luck!0 -
Have you tried using the Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner? People look at me funny because they think that shampoo is only for horses but its actually for humans too! It makes my hair sleek and fluffy and soft.0

Anything that is free of sulfate, silicone, or sodium is good for dry, curly, or frizzy hair. I once had a roommate that was a hair stylist and gave me GREAT hair care advice. I use Loreal's sulfate free shampoo, and another good brand is Aveeno. An expensive version of that is Joico's line of sulfate-free products. But sulfates, silicone, and sodium all cause dryness and is in almost every generic brand of shampoo on the market. Check your ingredients list to see!0

Also, I just switched from a wal mart hair dryer to a CHI brand one, and the difference when I blow dry my hair is phenomenal! it dries faster, feels softer, and frizzes way less. I also use Redken's anti-snap leave in conditioner after every shower.0

Everyone's hair is different. I recommend checking out www.naturallycurly.com. They have a GREAT forum that really helped me years ago. To start out with, It's best NOT too use products with sulfates or silicones. Years ago, I used Frizz-ease and all those siliconey products, and they are horrible for your hair in the long run. Check out the book Curly Girl about going CG. There's a lot of info on naturallycurly too about choosing the best products for your hair type. I have type 2C or 3A hair and find using DevaCurl (especially OneCondition), KinkyCurly products (KnotToday+CurlyCustard) or shampoo bars with an Apple Cider vinegar rinse, and homemade flax seed/aloe gel work great for me most of the time, but it depends on the season- I switch it up. I also use Henna and Indigo to dye my hair and it makes it healthier. Good luck!
also, the Curl-Ease towel is a must-have!!0 -
LOL... I've been dealing with this for a long time!!!
I have blown, flat ironed, and used a million products to straighten my hair. About a month ago, I decided that I'm done. After 40 years of spending at least 20 minutes a day on my hair, I WILL NO LONGER FIGHT THE CURLS. I have STOPPED trying to FIX my hair.
I do use a product called Diva Curl that you scrunch into your hair when it's wet. It doesn't dry hard or crunchy, but it holds the curls. They also have a spray that I use when it dries.
I have had more positive comments on my hair since I "let it go" that I have had in many years. I'm actually getting used to it and I like it.
My advice... get a good cut and let go of straight hair thing.0 -
I've tried it all and the best thing I've found is Keratin Smoother done at a salon. It's expensive but it works. The relaxers did work but they damaged my hair. The Keratin didn't.0

This was me until I chopped it all off and started over again. First of all, a cut is necessary if you want it to look good. Maintain your ends! Dry hair breaks like crazy, which adds to the frizziness.
In order to hydrate, I do a few things: first of all, I, too, use Deva Curl. When I run out and don't want to spend money I switch it up to a sulfate free shampoo and extra hydrating conditioner for a while but my hair always looks better when I go back to Deva Curl. I also only shampoo every 2 or 3 days and just scrub my scalp and condition the other days. To get my hair curled, I always apply a liberal amount of gel while my hair is still very wet and scrunch it in upside, squeezing out excess water. I highly recommend air drying to decrease frizz.
Finally, and this is not for everyone --- I use henna to color my hair. I had been dyeing my hair since I was in middle school and the dye just DESTROYED my hair. So what I did was I chopped my hair off (again) and let the dye grow out, cutting it off until it was all gone. Then, I started dyeing with henna. My hair has never been healthier and more lustrous than it is now.
I hope some of these ideas help you! Best of luck!
(One other recommendation -- limit your pony tail time as much as possible! Braid if you need it out of the way, but pony tails are dry hair killers!)0 -
I've noticed that people shampoo their hair waaay too often....so I still take showers but I don't use shampoo on my hair every day, and my scalp is used to that so it doesn't get greasy too soon like it would if I shampooed everyday.0
-
Ahh, so much help! Thank you guys so much, keep it comin0

You more than likely have split ends from all the coloring. You need to get it trimmed.
I have curly/wavy hair and I don't shampoo every day. On the days I don't I condition. I also don't blow dry or use any heat products on my hair. I use (right now) frizz ease mousse and a bed head spray curl product. I am going to switch to an aveda curl product (I forget the name) which was recommended by a hairdresser I met on vacation. I also get regular trimmings although I have to gotten it trimmed in a few months because my hair grows slow and it is just gaining some length back.
I also just started putting olive oil in my hair before my shower, letting it sit u til I am done then washing it out. I just started this so I can't say if it's doing anything yet.0 -
I condition every day or every other day, shampoo every third day. I use an anti-frizz serum and let it air dry. DO NOT TOUCH IT while it's drying or it will turn into a fluffy frizzy mess.0

I had hair below my shoulders until new year when I cut it all off - almost all anyway, It's very short.
The things that helped most for my long, dry, frizzy hair:
- don't wash it too often. I only use shampoo once a week, but I rinse it most days to get the sweat from running out of it.
- use a leave in conditioner
- colour is going to damage it, I don't think you can change that - but you could ask your hairdresser if there are any new kinds of dye that are better than others?
- moroccan oil is lovely, give it a try as a leave-in product. It's great for your skin too.
- don't use a brush - a wide tooth comb will detangle without so much frizzing.0 -
I like the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls product line. I use that shampoo, conditioner, and curl lotion (finished off with a hairspray). And NEVER EVER brush your curls out, just comb it in the shower!0

I do not shampoo or color. The only thing I do is condition daily with Aussie's 3 minute miracle, and comb my hair with my fingers in the shower. I no longer use a comb.
For styling I buy a paul mitchell generic moisturizing mousse at sally's beauty supply. Recently I tried Aussie Frizz control cream. I like it so far!0 -
Sounds exactly like my hair. I learned I have to invest in good products :< It's a bit pricy but I use Nexxus Sleektress shampoo and Nexxus Hydrasleek conditioner. It works -very- well. At first I was concerned that the bottles were so small (and at almost $10 a pop!) but I've had the same two since the beginning of March and I've still got quite a bit (My hair is past my shoulders). I can't just NOT wash it because otherwise the top of my head gets incredibly oily - especially since I work out almost every single day.
I also don't brush my hair. When I get out of the shower I put up my hair in a towel, then after I brush my teeth and get dressed I just use a gentle mousse and let it curl naturally. You can see the results in my main pic0
