Stand out or fit in?

To whatever degree that your fitness relates to other people, would you rather stand out or fit in?
It really seems to me that there are three ways that you get treated by people.
1. You're ostracized
2. You're ignored
3. You're sought out
I have a feeling that many of the people at MFP have been #1 in times past, and are looking to blend in. My question is why choose to blend in and not go for broke?
For the other people who choose to stand out, what's your motivation for doing so? Are you making up for things past? Are you bored with the status quo?

Just curious.0 -
I was always just ignored. Then as things went along I started getting noticed and it was weird and I kind of wanted to go back to being ignored again. But Im over it now.... going for broke as you say. Notice me!!0

I want to stand out. I want to be seen..I have always struggled with being invisible so It's just my inner child I guess.0

I'm a 5'10" redhead - it's sort of difficult for me to "blend in," but I managed it quite well in the past.
Honestly, I am a bit of an attention *kitten* online but quite shy in real life, so I guess I'm a combo of 2 and 3.0 -
Breaking up my goals into small steps. My "benchmark" is fitting in but my ultimate goal... my ultimate (unrealistic) goal is to be the Tony Azevedo of girls waterpolo. My ultimate realistic goal is just to be pretty damn fantastic0

I'm an attention *kitten*. Can I just lay down right here and we talk?0

I have always stood out in a crowd... I like to be noticed... I LOVED to smile and have a good time!!! I like to laugh and make jokes and be loud!!! I don't think I will ever change!0

Honestly don't care.0

I want to fit in with those who stand out.0

Stand out for Yourself! Do things because you want to, exercise and eat the way you feel comfortable with, listen to your body, listen to your brain and your heart! Make yourself happy...Standing out is (in my opinion) the only way to fully live your life and enjoy yourself and others! Who cares if someone else goes to the gym 7 days a week, or only 2...if 4 or 5 works for you then so be it. Don't get down on yourself for working out too much or too little....don't let others tell you what is best for you! Unless you have hired them to do that or they are your doctor because then you would have done that for yourself!
Just Stay True To Yourself! If you fit in, then great and if not, then oh well!0 -
As a 5'8 blonde I have never been ignored......and getting into better shape has only made me stand out more......but I have always been the type to say like me or not......I don't give a crap0

In public I tend to stand out, not from my looks but my personality. I love to laugh a lot and be a big kid. I have always been this way! :drinker:0

If something is popular there is usually something to whatever is popular. However, Group Think has been a cause of huge problems through out history and will continue to do so.
With that in mind. I will set and determine my own goals and how to accomplish those goals. If that gets me any combination of the 3 options you gave I don't really care as long as I'm making progress.0 -
I want to stand out... but I will settle for fitting in!0

I have always gotten noticed, no matter what size I was and now that I am on this journey I am getting double the play and going for BROKE!0
-
Im shy as hell in real life unless I know you.. I blended in in the past as the quirky one.....that stood on the side lines. Im trying really hard to go for # 3 now Im trying to teach myself HOW to stand out0
-
Yes, yes, you want to stand out or you want to fit in. But WHY?0
-
I do what I do, say what I say, and look how I look because it makes me happy. I won't do something that's not me just to make a statement, but I also won't refrain from doing something for fear of standing out.
Sometimes I stand out, and sometimes I blend right in. Some people choose to ignore me, some people will walk over from across the room just to say hi. It is what it is.0 -
I'm usually #3. I'm the life of the party and fun to be around.0

If you've never been morbidly obese, I will never be your friend because I can't trust that you know anything about diet or fitness If you started out thin, you're just a poser!
....sorry, was channeling someone from yesterday's threads. :flowerforyou:
There's a lot of fit-bashing and skinny-bashing, and there's no need for that. But I've found loads of support on here from wonderful people, so, as they say, "Haters gon' hate".
If you've got 7 haters, you need to find a way to make it to 14 by the end of the summer, otherwise you're not doing your job.0 -

Very true. I'm waiting on all the people to come along and say, "WHAT?!? Your fitness shouldn't have anything to do with other people, you shallow pr*ck."0 -

I said can we talk!

Stand out because I'm me and I'm unique.
If you don't stand out you are invisible. If you're invisible how can you make any friends? STOP being invisible and caring what anyone thinks. All that matters is what YOU think. Be yourself because everyone else is taken!
No I was usually ignored/ostracized in high school by the popular preps because I was one of the smart girls.( I was used to it I simply ignored them). That is until they needed help because they were too busy being stuck up to pay attention in class. I only fell for it once. After that they were on their own. High school is over and I can say out of a large percentage of them I have a Doctorate what do they have? I would have rather been a nerd who studied and made good grades than be a popular moron like that any day.
Yes and no because things have started finally changing. Most are realizing the nerds you made fun of yesterday are now your bosses TODAY. "Revenge of The Nerds" indeed. :drinker:0 -
I want to stand out in my man's eyes and my own eyes!0
-
I always try to Stand out.................Why be like everyone else..........
Thats why I break out the Gold soccer shoes!!!0 -
would you rather stand out or fit in?
Neither.
I would rather be true to myself and what I believe in and let the chips fall where they may when it comes to other people's reaction to me. If that means I fit in: cool. If it means I don't: cool.
Popularity doesn't mean as much to me as authentic connections with good people. The best way for that to be achieved is to be completely upfront and without artifice.
I don't want to be anything other than the best version of me that I can be.
Interesting question. Nice one.0 -
Very interesting thread.
I've always sort of blended into the background - girl next-door kind of looks, just one of the guys, told I was cute and not much more. Sort of...average.
Well, now that I've gotten into better physical shape - people are noticing which is weird and uncomfortable but kind of exciting, in a way. And not just men but women too. Anyway, once they find out how old I am, that's when they start making a big deal about it. I guess women my age are supposed to be: frumpy, face full of wrinkles and gray hair, lol.
Honestly, I don't have a preference b/c sometimes I just want to blend in and other times stand out.0 -
Are you conducting social experiments on us?
TIN FOIL HAT: ACTIVATED
I'm ready now0 -
I am trying to make healthier changes for ME however if I am going to put in all the time and effort, then I want to stand out! If someone notices my hard work then perhaps that will motivate others to make fitness and proper nutrition a priority too0
