I'm sure there are people who are overweight who are genuinely happy people and who are happy with who they are, but I bet anything that every single one of them would opt to be thin if given the choice.

To put it another way, I am middle class. I am happy with my life but I sure as hell wouldn't turn down a million or two.

I would turn down the million, cause I tend to think logically... first it goes to the goverenment... then your bills, then any other expenses you might have. By the time you really can spend anything on yourself... you can't even by a new car

Plus, what about those who do lose the weight and feel out of place, even though they are now "hawt" in society eye. They hated their transformation.

Look up the virgin who weighed 600 pounds, and read how he lost nearly all of it, and put 400 back on because of depression that followed the weight loss that no one told him about.

I really don't think the 600 lb man's issues (at either weight) were because he loves himself. His seems like a problem of self loathing (at any weight)

And I don't see any logic behind you refusing a million. If anyone ever offers it to you, you may give it to me :)

I have no idea what others really think, but I know the last time I was happy with my size, I was 12 and had never thought about it at all, and I've been super skinny more than a few times in my life.

It's sad, what our culture does to people.

    Deal.

Even with the added taxes it'd be worth it. A one time gift is not going to bump me into a higher tax bracket, especially if spent wisely.

Ether way, back to the original question... you have to choose, to do something. you can choose to hate yourself for getting heavier... or not. If we let society choose for us, then guess what, you might as well be called a slave to society. If your trying to lose weight for anyone or anything other than your own wish to... then you are doing it for the wrong reason. It is alright to have inspirations but, it is you who makes the choice.

I know I have a friend, who the only reason he even remotely cares about his weight, is because the doctor is yelling(not literally) at him every time he goes in for a check up. Beyond that he his perfectly happy with his weight.

my opinion is that i don't think they are, i know that i am not, im not saying that i think they dont love themselves, just not happy with what they see in the mirror, size wise, i agree with whoever said that they may just not be bothered either way but i think if given a choice to be fit, and in good shape tomorrow i think they would take it, my friend who i was having this debate with said that there are people who are happy being fat and that they meet people like that all the time, i thought, hmmm thats interesting because to the majority of people i would seem that way but it is just a front, a false confidence i have especially when talking to slim, fit people, a defence mechanism i suppose.

there are alot of kinds of overweight so when i say over weight i mean someone who is considered overweight to obese in their BMI not really just 5 or 10 lbs

this debate came up because i know someone who is overweight like myself and they never talk about trying to get into shape, i thought about how i feel now and how great it would feel to not have a care about the way i looked, then the question came up "do they really not care and are happy with their size or are they just not talking about it?"

this thing about society is very interesting, he is happy with his weight but someone else would say that doesn't care about himself because he is not taking action and trying to get into shape, if everyone in the world were fat i guess everyone would be happy and vice verca if every one were slim, societies views are powerful, its kinda sad, it would be nice if the main concern for everyone was just being healthy, for example i am overweight but i have no health issues and im considered quite attractive (sorry, really not trying to be vein lol!) so i should be happy, but i wont be happy until i get rid of my muffin top, bingo wings and fat *kitten* i have always said if i could i would chose to just be happy with myself, but thats just me

I s more unhappy with my size when I wanted to lose 10 lbs than when I was older, more mature, financially stable, emotionally secure, happily married, and wanted to lose 50 lbs. IMO a lot of the people who cannot possibly imagine an overweight person being happy are sayin that because they are so unhappy with their much low amount they have to lose or even with their ideal body weight. If they grow up and mature they will realize that weight is just a number and not a reflection of happiness.

Would I like to be thinner? ABSOLUTELY!! But that doesn't affect my happiness with myself anymore than the fact that I'd like to be richer or taller or have perfect eyesight affects my happiness. I cannot imagine being so petty and self absorbed as to think that that one petty factor could actually influence whether or not someone is truly happy with themselves and their life. I fee sorry for people who think that way.

i don't mean that it would make them desperately unhappy in every aspect of life and want to kill themselves i just mean unhappy with their weight, like you said "would i like to be thinner? ABSOLUTELY!!"

I'd also like to be richer, taller, and have hair without split ends. But just because I don't have those things doesn't mean I'm not happy or content with my life. It doesn't mean that it's a priority to me or that I'm embarrassed to be seen in a Ford instead of a Lexus. It doesn't mean I'm envious of my neighbor's new Mercedes. I'm perfectly happy with the way things are. Your original question was rather juvenille, petty, silly, and frankly mean. Can you imagine someone who doesn't own a 2500+ sqft home being truly happy? Stupid question right? Well it's not any stupider than asking if someone who is overweight can truly be happy.

Yes, but eating oneself to death typically isn't done out of love or high self esteem. I think OP was talking about the severely and morbidly obese. Would you say that someone who smokes 3 packs a day is loving themselves, or someone who drinks to excess? When your health isn't a priority there is usually a reason for that, and it ain't self love.
