Your muscles are retaining water from the weight lifting. It's normal and will come back off.

I'm no expert, so take my comment with a small grain of salt. However, it sounds like you're doing all kinds of great things for yourself; eating better and working out. A lot. It sounds like your body is now really starting to react to all the hardcore workouts your doing and you're starting to gain muscle. That bad part is, muscle weighs more than fat, so it means you gain weight according to the scale. The good part is, that muscle is making you leaner and "meaner." The scale will balance itself back out as your body gets used to the heavy duty exercise, and then the numbers will go back to going in the preferred direction. Wayyyy down. In the mean time, focus on the non-scale victory here. You're doing an amazing job eating right and working out like an amazon. With the weight loss you've had so far, I'm sure you're starting to notice visible changes to your body; which are just as important as the number... sometimes more important.

The moral is, don't be so hard on yourself. You may not have a loss every single week. But the idea is that you stay consistent and your body, and weightloss will follow suit. Take a deep breath and keep on keeping on.

    You're a super star!

Oh, and if fluctuations are going to make you 'freak out'.....don't weigh yourself every day...especially if you're incorporating weight training into your routine.

i knew it had something to do with that (water retention) but didnt know that would happen after one day! thanks!!
  • Throw your scale away. Just get weighed at the doctors. Relax while you're at it...exercise is a good stress reliever.

You will gain a littel more weight because like what has been posted earlier... muscle weighs more. As you put on more muscle, more fat will be consumed, and you will start to see the numbers go down again... eventually your body will find a happy medium

2 pound fluctuation is normal, probably just water and salt. Weigh yourself once a week, no more to avoid these kind of freak outs.

Unless you suddenly ate 7000 extra calories in two days it is water from the lifting. I started ripped in 30 and am up 5 lbs in 3 days but since I have not eaten close to 20000 excess calories I am fairly certain it is water retention from the harder work out. Keep at it you will be fine.

water retention from starting a new exercise.
  • How are you all calculating exercise for 30 day shred..someone suggest that I put circuit training/aerobics which is what I did yesterday...any other suggestions?

Its also impossible to gain 2 lbs of muscle from 1 day of the 30DS....it would take a month or more, eating at almost maintenance, and heavy lifting. Muscle doesn't weight more than fat- it is more dense and takes up less space, and keep doing your thing because making healthy changes feels amazing! :)

I agree with everyone suggesting it's water retention. I'm a runner and experience the same thing - I almost ALWAYS gain a pound or two the day after a long run of 10-12 miles. Yes, I definitely lose it and see the benefits of those runs in the 3-4 days following; but the initial day or two after you'll see water retention. Good for you for starting the shred!

When I see the muscle weighs more than fat posts, I want to pound my head against a wall. Where do people get this misinformation?

Unfortunately, I think a lot of them get it here, and just keep repeating it. Way too much "bro-science" being passed alone on this site.

The whole "muscle weighs more than fat" theory doesn't bother me as much as the idea that people think they might have gained 5 lbs of muscle after working out and dieting for like a week.....

    this

    besides
your body can fluctate as much as 5 lbs depending on how much water you are retaining - what food is in your system .. and when you last had a poo

With all respect to you and the other poster that said she's gaining muscle, that could not possibly be true!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to gain lean muscle mass?? Add in the fact that she is a woman without substantial testosterone and then she only did 30DS for 1 DAY!!! It's glycogen and water!!

At least that one has a kernel of truth. A same size piece of muscle would weigh more than a same size piece of fat. I'd much rather see that than, "You have to eat above your BMR." :explode:

I can agree with that....its 'smaller' and I understand that's what most people mean when they say that. I don't claim to be any kind of expert, but the theory of gaining all this muscle while losing fat at the same time (in a matter of just days or weeks) is what's more of a concern. People are being led to believe that, when its simply not logical or possible. Not trying to hijack the OP's thread...but we definitely fluctuate daily, especially when weight training is involved and I hate hearing people explain water gain as muscle gain.
